How To Fix Blinker and Tail Light Issues on a 73-79 F150

  • When I started working on this 1977 F150, I had some bulbs that weren't working. So after replacing the bulbs, I thought I was finished. BUT, when I would turn the headlights on, the turn signal bulbs on the dash would light up. I also noticed that the bulbs on the front of the truck were not lighting up with the headlights on. And to top that off, when I would turn the blinker on either side, the little light that lights up the headlight and windshield wiper knobs would blink! What I ended up figuring out is, if your ground wires in the blinker and tail light sockets aren't making a good connection, this is what's going to happen. In the video, you'll see how I was able to fix this problem with the existing sockets. In all honesty, the best thing is to replace the sockets. I've got some ordered and will be replacing these. Please drop any questions you have below and if you think the video was helpful, please subscribe. More 73-79 F150 videos will be coming. Thanks!

    Thank you so so much for the information. Bought a 1978 to work on with my grandfather and he passed away before him and I could even work on the thing and being in my 20’s, I have no knowledge of car systems older than I am!😂 Thank you again for posting what you found.

    My 78 f 150 has had the same symptoms for 7 years. Tried everything. Watched your video and an hour later it's fixed! My ground contact was completely rusted and broken off. Finally I have turn signals and marker lights. Such a relief! Thank you so much for this video!

    I just got done changing out the rear tail/turn signal sockets on a 76 for a friend of mine...bought the dorman replacement sockets....worked great...couldnt find new sockets for the backup lights...i bought 2 more tail/turn signal sockets and used them for the backup lights..the sockets fir perfect into the housing . I just hooked up the red wire on the new sockets to the hot wire for the backup light...that way it uses the bright element of the 2 element bulb...taped the extra un used wire out of the way

    I’m about to start tracing my tail light issues on my ‘78 and this video should save be so much time. I haven’t opened anything up yet but I assumed my intermittent tail lights were a ground issue (only had the truck 3 days). Thanks for the info!

    The best way to check electrical issue with those old ford's is to disconnect all fours harnesses to the head lights and markers. Lift the hood there's one square connecter on each side near the inner fender and on the back of the box under Neath . Once u disconnect turn key on and check cluster for blinkers working. Now plug one light in at a time and check for faults example flicking dimmer ect. This way you can determine where the fault is. Then go from there

    looks like going little further into depth tomorrow, just needed make sure was going into right bag of worms, rear turn, but not when lights r on, front don't work at all, they did work until I added missing front l bulb, and replaced burnt out turn on r side front. so think my ground s are n plugs need some attention. Nice video.

  •  Před 3 lety +3

    Your video helped a lot. I knew I had a ground issue in the front right. And after some continuity testing (as shown in your vid) I found the issue. Unfortunately, when trying to get the ground wire out the socket, the wire let loose in the connection. No way I could get that out (corroded). So after getting a new socket and wiring that in, problem solved. Thanks again!

    Could this happen with reverse lights as well or could that be a neutral safety switch?

    • @TheKeymaster316
      @TheKeymaster316  Před 3 lety +1

      I can imagine that you would have a similar issue with the reverse lights if the grounds were bad, for sure. On this particular truck, I swapped the column out, which originally had the 3 on the tree. The button for reverse was under the hood, but since I removed the linkage under the hood for the column, I had to rig up a toggle switch for the reverse lights. My current truck is an automatic and I’m not sure where the reverse button is. But I would always start with the sockets in the tail lights. Turn the key to on, put the truck in reverse and take a test light and see if you have power to the reverse socket.
