  • “You’re gonna get fired anyway so you might as well start racing!”
Clay Millican, a forklift operator turned NHRA legend, has become a staple of the drag racing world and, lucky for us, he’s our very first interview on It’s Not the Car!
This show’s format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Guest Teaches Us a Thing.” If you like it, don’t worry, there are plenty more to come whether you like it or not.
Related Trivia: Clay once experienced vibrations so hard in the car that it shook his dental crowns out of his mouth.
Mike, who wrote this description with approximately four remaining brain cells, will probably suffer the same fate simply by continuing to miss his dentist appointments.
This episode was produced by Mike Perlman.

    ABOUT THE SHOW:
It’s Not the Car is a podcast about people and speed. We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts.
Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and an internationally renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine.
We don’t love racing for the nuts and bolts-we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel.

Awesome interview of an awesome racer! Clay’s the man! All those early pioneers like Garlits and others has inspired several generations of drag racers and started a racing sport that has technically skyrocketed into the outer reaches of engineering capabilities!

YES, i go through the same cardiac distortion when riding my harley. Prior to role on throttle my BPM is around 165 - 180. Once i set her in gear and role on it comes down to resting rate.

I went to highschool with Clay and my mom was his mom's hairdresser at her beauty shop. He always wore racing T shirts in school and there is a picture of Clay in the cafeteria wearing a Dale Earnhardt shirt in our highschool annual

Clay's first race car was a dodge charger exact replica of the general lee from the Duke's of Hazard show and one winter the real general lee could not make it to the car show in Memphis because of the weather and they had Clay take his car to the show

It's similar to being on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier with an E/A 6B on the catapult and you're 20ft away. But it is still nothing lcompared to being present when Clay Millican and the Parts Plus team on A.
