  • In this video Darren Magee discusses Hannibal Lecter, is a psychopath or not? Looking at the behaviours, characteristics and personality of Hannibal the cannibal, fictional psychopath, serial killer and psychiatrist.
The character has been played by three different actors to date, Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins and Mads Mikkelsen. So how close to real psychopaths is he? Is he serial killer or supervillain?
    Reality vs fantasy?
This video focuses on the scene from the Silence of the Lambs movie where the character Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, meets Lecter for the first time. Then follows a breakdown of the interactions.

The videos I make are topics suggested by you the viewer. Feel free to suggest any mental health or psychology subjects you'd like me to cover in future videos. Just a reminder though, these videos are not a substitute for support from a mental health professional.

I'd be interested in hearing you talk about Negan from the Walking Dead

"First meet" is not the best scene to analyse Hannibal. That what happens will only work in a film, because the script says "Clarice has to react like ...". In real the manipulations will not work, because there is not even one real manipulation. The scene is made to confuse and unsettle the viewer (you).
It's also the wrong actor to analyse. Cox plays the psychopath completely wrong. Cox Hannibal has emotions even when he is alone and on the other hand sometimes the mask is broken even he is in an important situation. The Mask of Hopkins Hannibal is broken over the most of the film, the mask doesn't seem natural (more like put-on). That's not normal for a functional psychopath. Really not. Mikkelsen plays him nearly perfect there are only some small mistakes.
Also the script of "Silence of the Lambs" has many mistakes. The games you are talking about "let her sit to look up to him" also "self-importance" are games of a psychopath who don't know he is one and don't understand his psychopathy (he is a psychiatrist).

You said he was impulsive. In a previous video I thought you said that it was sociopaths who were impulsive? Or was it that sociopaths are more often impulsive than psychopaths? Also, you said he was wounded and lashed out, although while remaining composed. That seemed to me to imply sociopath. I think that the distinction between the two may be the controlled, cerebral quality of the character. Could you comment on this?
