We’re all looking for ways to make more money these days. So, you might be tempted to invest in cryptocurrency. But not only are cryptocurrency investments risky, there are a lot of scammers that want access to the rest of your money. Here’s what’s happening to a lot of consumers: you see an ad for a cryptocurrency investment, and you click on it. That might not be where the scam comes in. A short time later, someone calls you and offers to help you make your first crypto purchase. You welcome the help but don’t realize that the screen-sharing software you’re asked to download has just given the cybercriminal access to your whole computer. That often means all your financial information stored on that computer. Thousands of people have fallen for this scam through Microsoft Teams or Zoom also. Screen sharing isn’t just a way for someone to see what’s on your screen, it gives the criminal access to all of your files on that computer.

Here’s the Allworth advice: no legitimate investment advisor will ask you to download screen-sharing software. If you don’t know the company, check them out on the Better Business Bureau website before giving them any financial information. With your Allworth advice, I’m Amy Wagner.
