- At the Dubai Airshow 2023, the Tejas and Thunder flew at the same airshow for the first time.
The JF-17 is a low-cost fighter designed by Chinese company Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and manufactured jointly by China and Pakistan. This video shows a JF-17A Thunder Block-2 from the Pakistan Air Force and its display was filmed on Wednesday 15th November.
The Tejas is a light combat aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics from India. In this video, a Mk.1 variant Tejas is demonstrated by the Indian Air Force on Friday 17th November.

JF-17 seemed slightly faster while going straight up, but Tejas was much more agile in all kinds of maneuvers.

JF-17 has ability to take sharp turns at low speed,
Tejas has a smoother turn radius but at high speed.
One made in India , the other is a Chinese plane made for Pakistan which even the Chinese don't fly.

Tejas is a pilot's dream plane, fast on the turns, bends and lightweight enough to dodge radars and out-manuveur any angle of attack. It can be used in numbers to deny any air superiority in air to air combat and with the help of AWACS it's as capable a plane as you want in a hostile zone. Lovely machine ❤

Those were French dude! Tejas is modernized Mirage 3. Indians hired French Engineers in 80s for 10 million each of 80s money. They brought their design. It has the same combat range (500km) and Fight time (1 hr) as Mirage 3.

Both are cool jets but i would say I noticed Tejas was not bleeding as much energy as JF17 was this gives Tejas a good advantage..

Even though it’s a delta wing the FCS on the Tejas is very capable and it has the same kind of automatic slow flight protections as the Typhoon for example with automatic slat extension. The JF-17 by comparison is a relatively outdated and rudimentary affair made mostly out of stamped steel and riveted together, the early versions didn’t even have FBW in all axis so it’s a much more conventional machine reminiscent of the 20th century

Dude u really have no idea about the aeronautics right? Full Delta designs are notorious for bleeding energy while turning. They that due to the drag on those huge wings. Resulting in poor maneuverability aka turn and burn performance. Maintaining energy is the key advantage of JF17A's over this Tejas Series.
If Tejas Mk1 beats JF Block 2 by this much gap then what will MK1A which is 1200kg lighter will do? MK2 will be different class aircraft 🤔

Tejas's maneuverability looks much faster and smoother than JF 17.
deltas r faster, thats how delta designs work. However, they are extremely poor in maneuverability. They cant turn, arnt much agile and nimble. And thats absolutely vital for any aircraft in modern warfare to dodge enemy AA/AD missiles....and even though the realistic chances of BFM r low, but if it happens, then this becomes absolutely vital.

This quote refers to Republic of China's Indigenous Defense Fighter(F-CK 1 Ching Kuo), that plane is a F-16 derivative with Northrop's F-5 characteristics. That means both JF-17 and Indigenous Defense Fighter have superb energy retention while Delta wing designs can turn sharply and have better climb rate.

tejas is carrying pods at both wings called the smoke pod. Inside it there are 2 compartments ...1 filled with oil and other filled with colorant.
if you want color or without colorant. When the pilot opens one of the valves, the oil flows through a small pipe and exits... With the heat it immediately turns into gas and gives this thick smoke

Let's conduct an air exercise between all light catagory fighter jets currently available, i.e. Tejas mk2, JF17 block 3, Saab Gripean, South Korean FA50, American F16 - not in DCS but actual combat like senareo . As a defence enthusiast egarly waiting for this 😊
F16/Gripen isn't Light Weight Fighter, its Medium Weight. Its the USAF who designates her as light which has more to do with their Hi/Lo mix. They Deploy F15/22 as High end fighters to give the main punch/blow to the enemy and F16/35 as low end to due the mopping job or deal with stragglers. Meaning that F15/22 act as bomb/BVR trucks and F16/35 as escorts.
But as of a few years ago, they r now also building a new proper 4.5 gen light weight fighter (under 15K kg max payload). F16 (19,187 kg MTOW) is Rafale, J10, Mig29/35, EF2000, JAS 39 Gripen (16,500kg MTOW) etc. type Medium Weight Fighter (MWF).
As for FA-50 its a LIFT fighter meaning fighter trainer. Proper LWF are Tejas Mk 1/1A and JF17 series. Tejas Mk-2 is said to be a MWF.

This is the age of BVR combat and electronic warfare. An aerobatic performance at an air show is just that, entertainment. No country is going to reveal its true war-fighting capabilities and doctrines at such an event. Tejas and JF-17 are never going to come within dogfighting range of each other for gun engagement. This isn’t WW2 with fighters shooting guns at one another where maneuverability gave you an upper hand.
But maneuverability works best against escaping missiles you know .
Just like the scene from top gun .
More maneuverability = more chances of survival if flares run out.
That is what the US thought would happen, until their aircraft were being attacked by guns in Vietnam. Missiles cannot work at close range.
Agility also matters while outturning missiles.

Both jets where good but jf17 pilot was struggling with jet and it's control and loosing it energy very quickly with each manuver.in same time Tejas was easily fliping and turning in high speed with out loosing it's energy.due to delta wing configuration or more high-tech flyby wire system with American engines..
dude! u do realize that full deltas cant turn right? those huge wings create a lot of drag and poor fuel mileage. Tejas Mk 1/1A's combat range is only 500 km and 1hr is flight time due to this very reason. And u add weapons on it and aspect ratio comes up which is 1:75. Resulting in Extremely poor maneuverability. Meaning, it cant turn and burn!

In this answer I will give comparison on three key parameters
Engine: Tejas Mk1A has GE 404 Engine while JF17 Block 3 will feature a Chinese WS 13 Engine which will make it worse than JF17 Block2. Fuel consumption of GE 404 at 10,000 feet is what WS13 will have at 50,000 making it cheaper to do air patrol with Tejas than JF17 Block 3.
Radar: JF 17 Radar range is 105 (up)/ 85(down). Pakistan is reportedly also still considering Leonardo’s Grifo-E AESA radar system. as KLJ 7A is not used in any other fighter. Tejas uses EL/M-2052 which has higher range and used in other fighters. Some folks have put figures of 200 km etc for KLJ 7A. Those people should calculate power requirements for such range and explain how will it all fit in small JF 17 while the same Radar is used in much bigger J-10 Chengdu and advertised range is what I quoted above.
Armaments: Tejas MK1A with Astra which has range of 110km slightly higher than SD 10 (PL 12). Before someone says PL 15, pls note PL -15 is for AWCS and refuelers. It is not deigned to take down fighter aircrafts and BTW, how will you guide it if Radar of JF 17 has less range.
Tejas has a tailless delta wing config provides better high alpha performance characteristics than conventional wing designs.
In a dogfight, delta wing Tejas MK 1A will eat JF 17 Block 3 with ws 13 engine alive with derby/python missiles. In a BVR fight, both aircrafts will finish their missiles and go home as No Escape Zone of either Astra or SD-10 is relatively small.
In Air to ground role, Brahmos NG launched from Tejas MK1A will pulverise target just by its sheer kinetic energy even without warhead.
JF 17 is mostly a Chinese plane irrespective of what Pak netizen think. In fact Su 30 MKI is more Indian than JF 17 is Pakistani.
In real world, JF 17 is unlikely to meet Tejas. Any Indian aggression to take PoK will be done by Su 30 MKI, Mig 29 or Rafale while JF 17 will play role of interceptor and will get punched hard. Any PAF aggressive will be done by F16 and they will meet MIGs, Sukhois and Rafale along with Tejas.

Let me clear this air. Both birds are great.
1. JF 17 is a low cost competitor to F 16 while Tejas is a low cost competitor of Mirage ✅️
2. JF 17 has a strake based configuration trimmed delta wing which provides more aerodynamic agility based on payload penalty configuration. A multi role aircraft config ✅️
3. Tejas is a delta wing bird which gives its more payload advantage compared to JF 17 but at a reduced aerodynamic agility offered by delta wing aircrafts.✅️
Tejas is half a generation ahead of Mirage2000. Mirage2000 are on the verge of retirement next decade, while Tejas is a new entry and would continue to serve for decades to come.

Tejas has better maneuverability than the other jet. It effortlessly spins due to its ride by wire tech. The pilot doesn't have to bother the jet and he just needs to point it, on where it is supposed to go. Wow INDIA 🇮🇳
What the pilot demonstrated does not necessarily equal the plane's capability. The capability may be more for either or both. Better not to judge from 10 minute clip.
Teja's Kaveri engined failed along with radar. Tejas now use general dynamics engine and israeli radar.
Fly by wire is standard in all modern fighter jets, its not special.

Clearly tail-less Delta wing has its limitations. However, adding canards would make it better in maneuverability.

Tejas looked good, it looks different than the rest of the plane right now we are seeing. I think it has great potential. Good job India developing something on your own, no make each and evey part yourself that will be awesome, yes we need to keep global business alive and trade between countries for friendship but I think India should develop one plane where all the parts are completely indian made.

That ugly Indian fighter jet had a black screen as soon as it took off and climbed out on the first day of the performance, and it immediately made a blind landing. And missed the flight show the next day, hahahaha

Interesting fact tejas is inspired by F20 tiger shark and it uses its engine Also the F404-IN20
Look carefully at its sleek fuselage.
Both seem to have pretty tame flight control systems like that if an F-15C. The Tejas jet definitely has tons of induced drag (for obvious reasons) as seen in the climb in the loop. The JF-17 seems to barely miss the F-16's rate and absolute chokehold turns. The F-16 flies the same turn with I'd guess 4 degrees of AOA less than that JF just did. Cool jets though

The USA has not expressed any interest in ordering the Tejas.
Poor performance is not the reason Myanmar grounded the JF-17 - it was grounded due to fuselage cracks.

@farhanashraf4297 - That's hardly a fair comment. No one aircraft type can fulfil every role. Just as India purchases the Tejas and the French Rafale, Pakistan is ordering J-10CEs from China in addition to the JF-17.

Both aircraft is great in their own role but in my own opinion i like more of jf-17 in term of look alone it look beautiful. Dont get me wrong tejas is also good but for delta nothing can beat mirage or mig 21 in term of look alone.

What is the Tejas production rate? I read it was 10 a year. An order for 100 aircraft would take 10 years. It would be obsolete before the last one enter service.
This is one of the major problems with the program, yes. However, HAL plans to up the rate very quickly to 28 per year.
The most important thing is the electronic systems and radar which goes to JF-17 but the maneuvers goes to Tejas, you can't judge till you see real dogfighting between them, there is other factors that affect which is better also .

A Pakistani engineer recently revealed the plot twist of Jf17, not only the machinery but also the entire structure of the plane is delivered by Chinese Air Force. All the parts are then brought to the assembly lines in Pakistan in trucks. They are then assembled and painted in the Pakistani air force camo.😂

Tejas also makes a great glider. Mostly, useful for one day, the next 2 days needed rest because it was 30 years in the making and gets tired easily. It is not much more than an early model Mirage. It looks so roughly made that to take it seriously as a contender against JF 17 is compare Maruti to Lexus.

The question really is how many each of the jets has been and will be produced and deployed. No matter how differently they appear in this air show clip of minutes, these two jets fall into the same category and generation, which means none of them will likely reach an overall exchange rate of bigger than 1:2 fighting each other in real battles. Ultimately what factually matters will only be the production capacities and deployment numbers of them.
It also depends on weapons it carries Tejas can use indian missiles like Astra mk1 and mk2. But it can also use Israeli meteor missiles. And Russian missiles too.
And the most important the hypersonic Brahmos.
But if we talk about numbers
Indian airforce ranks 4th in the world after US, China and Russia.
Currently IAF have 100 Tejas, and will order 97 more. IAF also have 250 SU 30, 69 mig 29, 50 Miraj 2000, and 50 mig 21. Tejas will replace Miraj and migs too.

JF-17A looks very like the F/A 18F Super Hornet, except the JF-17A is a single engine and single tail machine. the Chinese will copy anything and everything.
As for the Indian Tejas, it`s basically a re-vamped Dassault Mirage 2000.
chinese JF-17 is a decent plane actually, Tejas delta wing looks great.
