Professor Brian Cox is often called the poster boy of Particle Physics. He’s a Professor at Manchester University but is best known for his down-to-earth explanations of very complex questions about the universe.
He’s taught us physics in documentaries, TV shows, and many children’s programmes, making science accessible to millions. He has been working on the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider for many years. The project discovered the Higgs Boson, or The God Particle, in 2012.
Later this year, Brian will return to his arena tours with Horizons: a 2021 Space Odyssey, a cinematic journey through the story of how we came to be using state-of-the-art LED technology.

People shit on Joe Rogan, but watching this interview makes me appreciate how such a great interviewer Joe is. This is light and day difference when Brian goes to JRE. Joe gives Brian all the time to talk without interrupting and actually listens intently.

When it comes to guests about scientific stuff, rogan gets good guests on and gets them talking about things I want to hear. I just don't like him because of how much he flip flops on politics and won't speak out enough about the left. Probably because he is leftest. But an interviewer should be much more neutral with that stuff and just tell the truth.

He's incredibly annoying because he just butts in and interrupts when Brian is explaining something or ruminating on a theme. That totally kills the flow and concentration. I wish he wasn't there.

Brian Cox is one of my favourite presenters, so easy to listen to. Musician, educator, presenter.... Now it appears he has the patience of a Saint as well. Are there no limits to his skills?

Every interview I've seen, professor Cox answers questions that I've seen answered by other people but he just seems to enjoy it so much. He's so enthusiastic, like a kid, and he explains it in ways that make perfect sense

Which is why he was chosen by the BBC to communicate with the public, because he has the rare ability to have a good engaging personality, alongside being able to explain complex physics in layman's terms.

One has to admire Mr. Pinks self awareness when he says "my limited brain", its just a shame he then had to demonstrate it so effectively all the way through. I like how Brian says
"I don't know" when talking about life beyond earth and other topics.
When Brian says we don’t know he really means he doesn’t know.
Time is not linear, only experienced as being linear, so there is no beginning or end.
Something critical is being left out of Brian’s and most other scientists thinking, this is a multidimensional reality and quantum physics plus consciousness need to be included in their efforts to understand reality, plus the most critical thing of all that is missing is AN OPEN MIND. 🌟

How does Brian maintain that constant smiley face? I tried it and its damn hard.
There's great skill, in this case with a chunk of charisma, to explain complex issues with enough detail to mostly satisfy the curious, without losing anyone.
Could listen to Brian Cox all day. The paradox of the human species: some of us filled with awe and wonder, recognizing that life is short and precious, others filled with ignorance, hatred, fear and suspicion. How do we survive the next hundred years...😮

I love Bryan Cox, he speaks to my soul, with how poetically he speaks of his passion for physics, I wish to one day be able to see him in person on tour. I want to thank you for providing all your content, I have been dealing with grief loosing my mother and watching you here on youtube has truly helped me, when on days that I’m struggling , learning or the universe takes me on a journey away from pain to a place of inspiration

I keep hearing Einstein being referred to as a Master Reference for all thing space related, while realising he died ~ 2-1/2 years before we put anything up into space!
He was famous for imagining images of physical actions of matter with applied physics, which we have the use of modern computer based graphics to demonstrate, all such technology evolving way after his time, though there were Artistic Impressions sketched out to assist descriptions of.

I enjoyed this immensely. So much, that I played it twice.
Shame about some of the comments here about the hosts. The entire point of Brian’s role as a public communicator of science is exactly what we see in this excellent podcast episode.
It’s reaching out to people of all levels of understanding, and this video more than any I’ve found so far is the best example of that.
There’s nothing wrong with not knowing something, or not even knowing enough to know what even to ask. These are exactly the people we need to be reaching out to and welcoming with a friendly attitude.
From an interaction like this people that previously had no interest or knowledge in the subject might have a seed planted that grows into something more. Within the hosts or the audience listening. It might happen quickly or it might sit there for years before sprouting.
Science and the understanding of it should be for everyone. Not just people that have already bought the books or know the basics and are fanboying over the author.
This was a friendly conversation. Everyone involved was polite and having fun. Brian had all the time and patience in the world and clearly had fun, too.
This podcast interview is precisely why he’s the Royal Society Professor for Public Engagement in Science.
We need more like it, just as we need more silly interviews with talkshow hosts, and more serious casual lectures with an audience of fans. We need it all.
Thanks to both hosts who were fun and friendly, and asked some good questions many people would have asked in their position. Thanks for getting Brian on.
And thanks also to Brian for being an excellent public communicator and giving everyone time, regardless of where they’re coming from. And doing it with a smile and while having fun, too.

The large scale structure of space time, one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. It was great bedtime reading for my kids. And now it is free to download. Highly recommended.
I just rabbitholed myself in to a 2h reading stint after your recommendation. But I am not sure if we’re talking the same book, it’s full of formulas that aren’t really kids material I guess. Joking aside, it's a slightly condescending comment you've made. This kind of thing shouldn't just be for the highly educated, articulate elite. He's asking questions that are relevant to his level understanding or lack thereof (which is probably the same level as most of us watching this) and he articulates them in the best way he is able.

4:10 I have never thought of that! That is so interesting, and totally true. It's kind of like death. Nobody is worried about the billions of years that passed by before they were born, but a lot of people worry about not existing in the future. It's kind of the same but reversed. An infinite past makes us uncomfortable but an infinite future doesn't, that is so weird ^^ excellent point.
I think that the 13.8 billion years that I didn’t exist are far more concerning than the eternity that spans out after my death, that’s because once you have existed you can never “unexist”, said another way, imagine far in the future time travel is mastered, a time traveler coming back to 2023 could meet me, have a conversation with me etc, because in 2023 I am alive, so in a way you never die, you just cease to travel along the arrow of time into the future, but in the past you’re still there alive and kicking 😄
PS I know that travelling backwards in time is theoretically impossible, but lots of possible things were once “theoretically impossible” 👍

@@guarddog318 let’s have a think, the earth existed for billions of years before life existed, could we then question it’s existence prior to life, ie it’s existence not being experienced by a sentient being?, I would argue that on the balance of probabilities it did exist, regardless of being experienced/remembered/forgotten, so in my opinion existence has no relationship to experience.
And that's why people say everything is moving away from everything because the universe is expanding but matter moves independently of space and expansion will not effect the matter in space it will expand around the matter in space and independent of it. So space can still expand all it wants because space doesn't have mass?
It does effect mass, just not more significantly than the strong and weak nuclear forces. It effects light because it doesn't have mass, and therefore doesn't have those forces keeping it from being effected. Which is why things far away appear red shifted.
Space doesn’t expand inside of galaxies near as much as it does between them. Gravity essentially “pulls” space/time together, preventing the expansion inside regions strongly affected by gravity
Black holes are not a singularity as they have push pull. There’s two black holes in the centre of our Galaxy and they, like all black holes in the centre of the spiral galaxies, determine the physics of our galaxy.
This means that the physics in each galaxy varies slightly.
The conversation on "the unknown" was brilliant.
I personally am not scared or fearful of the unknown.
It confuses me as to why people fear the unknown as unknown is complete lack of information of observation, reported experience, assumptions and plausibility/ possibility and immagination.
Fear of unknown is an individuals inability to seperate the ego driven self imposed acceptance of ones meaning / uniqueness to a complete external acceptance that ones life in the physical world / universe is so small due to the enormous immensities of the unknown universe that an individuals ability to accept their life without knowing or understanding certain aspects goes completely against the cultural, philosophical or spiritual meaning ones ego places on oneself as a safety net to the thought of their own demise.
You are you no matter what specifications you impose on yourself to justify your existence. You are you no matter how singular or selfish you think just to exist.
Release The Ego, Extend your consciousness past linear time and free your mind and accept the empathetic universe as you are the universe and the universe is you whether alive or not.

I'm from Denmark and I will never forget what happened at Roskilde during the Pearl Jam concert, it was so sad. Much was done after the accident on June 30, 2000 to prevent this from happening again. It is very sad that such a tragedy repeats itself, when there are things that can be done to prevent it.
My favorite parts are everytime pink shirt asks a stupid question and Brian just absolutely ignores it and continues his train of thought
It's such a shame that Professor Cox was interviewed on this 'show' where at least one of the interviewers had absolutely no clue what questions to ask and even less about the answers given.
Professor Brian Cox is an extremely accomplished physicist who, in my humble opinion, would be better suited to a more scientific based environment of questioning.
The purpose of science communicators is to make science interesting to a non-scientific audience. This is mostly achieved by giving talks/being questioned in non-scientific environments.
Not everyone has the same level of comprehension but everyone can appreciate science to some capacity. Not all talks with Brian Cox would run smoothly because some folks are alien to the topics he covers.
The guy (Jax Jones) is a DJ I believe. Imagine if all music composers made music available only for people who studied music and know how to write music and play some form of instrument? Lol that's synonymous you saying he should only be present on science shows.
Trust me Brian being on this show has created new science enthusiasts from this channel's core followers.

Conversation gets ruined everytime the the bald guy speaks. It's like everyone is watching this in awe of Brian and even the first host is entertaining intelligent converstion and the BANG, bald guy opens his mouth and we change course to lala land where Brian has to suddenly switch to explaining reality to a kid. Only here for Brian now.
I'd love to have a personal conversation with Brian.. he's the only physicist that can explain things in a way I understand them..
Check out, Brian Green, Neil De Grass Tyson and a few other-mainly American physicists and Astro physicists! The Above two mentioned are absolutely incredible educators on the Cosmos and explain it beautiful! Brian Cox is a great fan of them both as well! They real are in a league of their own!!

When you think of the size of the universe, light travels painfully slow.
Kooks suitably gobsmacked.. Personally I conclude from Penrose's work that we and the entire physical cosmos are on a cycle - like a washing machine.
I love listening to Dr Cox, his explanations are so eloquent, articulate and relatable, but I had to turn this off because 👚 guy was so inarticulate and always interrupting with some irrelevant non sequitur.

This is a question that always intrigues me.
So if a black hole basically eats matter and ends up an infinitely dense point that we have no physics for.
And we know the Big Bang started at a infinitely dense point and that we don’t know the physics for before a certain time.
This being the case surely it can’t be known whether each black hole eventually becomes so dense that it implodes/explodes to form another universe.
A good analogy would be an hour glass with one side our universe as we know it, the narrow bit being the center of a black hole/Big Bang and the other side the new universe.

Our universe could have been the remnants of a black hole from another universe.
Or are there physics that prove this can’t happen. Seems feasible to me as we currently have no clue about black holes and no clue about the Big Bang as it happened.

The matter doesnt go away though it gets radiated back into our universe called hawking radiation. Even if the matter disappeared into it though isnt there alot more matter in the universe than there was ever absorbed into any black hole?

@@andromedaiscoming185 the visible universe, or the cosmos - the entire universe? we can only see - and talk about - the bit we can see. there is even more outside the visible we have NO IDEA what it may be like.
Considering the known possibilities of quantum mechanics, this very old theory seems quite tame.
Brian kept his cool having to respond to a barrage of questions heavily punctuated by unreasonable interruptions. I think the punk guy was very excited to interview BC, he made a meal of it. BC did pose a good question though, to his listeners at least, on whether it is a good idea to relocate heavy and polluting industries to Mars in order to save Earth from dying. We should be having this debate right now, I think.
