my issue with that is what they did to Bumi. Combining was smart but also they had to do it to condense 20+ ep per season to 8 and stay true to the original. And why did they have Kyoshi do the opening narration? Either Katara or Roku would have made more sense.

budget issues....to make one episode need more money than to make the whole animated series. Because this is just the first season they need to keep the budget very tight and make sure its spent equally, the producers and the investor didn't care about the series they just want to make profits, the creators and the directors might care but they can't do anything without MONEY. So they wont invest much in the first season. If this series goes well they will give more budget for season 2.. Maybe after this they will have enough money to make season 2 much better.@@alecstevens8467

@alecstevens8467 in this episode we've only seen Bumi for 2 seconds and he looks fine.
Also, I like the transition to Kyoshi for this show- she fits the Vibe much better. And Roku wouldn't have made any sense- he probably isn't going to be introduced until season 3, because going into the Fire Nation to get to his shrine doesn't make any sense. Even in the cartoon, they had to contrive a reason, whereas Kyoshi was right there on the way.
And does Katara actually make more sense, or are you just wearing your nostalgia goggles?

@@roaaoife8186 it makes far less sense to have kyoshi do the narration. Roku was the previous Avatar, he should be the one guiding the current Avatar. Wake up to the corporate pandering dude.

@alecstevens8467 Kyoshi is the first Avatar that's introduced in this one. And she fits the tone of the season much better.
What exactly is being pandered to by having her do the intro? If it was pandering they'd have Katara do it.

In my eyes combining Omashu, Jet and Teo was a really smart decision. The other option would have been to delete these out. In the cartoon, many adventures are their own episodes simply because they are on separate places. So, this here is the way. And putting together the story of a rebel fighting fire spies and someone who is not a simple traitor but is forced to work for the fire nation with the question who's evil, who's to trust really works well.

I think it’s one of the best decisions the show made, instead of taking out stories, this shows that they’re looking at these episodes deeply and seeing how what parts can work together into a cohesive narrative without losing the elements of those different episodes. It’s very clever.

Can't believe the fire nation didn't utilize Azula, Tai Lee, Mai, the archers, and whatever else they had, as soon as possible. At least giving them non risky assignments, that wouldn't put their lives in danger, they could've achieved so much so much earlier. Even the fire lord himself, he could've done as lot of work to help things along. And also can't believe the white lotus waited so long to do something, they're such a powerhouse of benders and warriors. Hate when shows have unrealistic writing, plot armor, and just does things that makes no sense, just to tell at good story. Why I love Andor so much, cause most of good the characters are doing very dark and shady stuff, that they don't wanna do, but have to do.

The White Lotus tile he "loses" in the show then finds in his sleeve is proof he didnt want Zuko to pursue the Avatar and probably wanted Aang to defeat Ozai from the moment he met Aang.

I also think this episode did the best at allowing the emotional beats to really land. In the other episodes I felt that aspect of the story was a bit rushed, but here I felt like there was more time for the audience to just sit with the emotion. Aang's scenes with Zuko too I thought were very well done, the two actors played off each other really well

Which, is not actually a problem with this episode and more an issue with the structure of the season as a whole and if that is my biggest complaint, I am happy. I absolutely loved the way the Mechanist and Jet were threaded together. Two people driven to extremes by the war. So good.

      @@annaj6512 threefold reason...
First, for the jet storyline, no pirates and in that episode in the original Iroh teaches Zuko more political stragegy and manuvering (we get that elsewhere in the remake though). We also get more time for Jet and Katara's attraction to develop and for Sokka's sniffing out of Jet's bad nature.
Second, with the mechanist he's more wise and interesting in the original; I think he was even older. We get to see Sokka's admiration grow for the mechanist and Sokka use his engineering skills to thwart the assault on the air temple in the original. We also get the storyline of Aang being frustrated with the desecration of the temple and his dissapointment in discovering that the airbender's didn't survive there either.
Third, I don't like the changes to Bumi. We got more background of him and Aang's friendship in the original and I don't remember Bumi being angry with Aang in the original for dissapearing but rather being more concerned with challenging him to prepare for the fight he had ahead in the original.
The other plot changes in the other parts of the show I don't mind. I like the show overall but I just didn't like what we lost from the original with these three storylines by lopping off parts of their original forms to wedge them together into a plot for times sake. Add more episodes or just break book one into two seasons. Lord knows they would have prolonged viewers subscriptions to Netflix for ATLA if they had. Most shows get 6 seaons before concluding.

first, there's too much unnecessary characters to include, pirates are not really that intergral part
2nd again, unnecessary scenes that can be set-aside or modified that can show same gravitas. It was already established in the first episode of this live-action that ALL airbenders were present at the genocide because of the comet festival.
3rd, Bumi's anger is valid, why? coz in his mind, Aang abandoned them and he has been fighting and surviving the war for a century. Realistically, it's human nature to have this bottled-up anger and that's what this show is showing us. Bumi's 'goofiness' is effective in the OG coz it's a cartoon, having that same level of character in this live-action which we all know from episode one is with a more serious theme cud just make it cringey .
All those changes are needed to make this show more 'realistic' and less animated.
We have all seen the one with a lighter tone, what's wrong in having a version that gives us a feeling of something different but is still very familiar. And lets be honest, this live-action is not just for kids anymore.

Yes, this episode made me decide to keep watching this series. I too liked the ‘remix’(as so many people are calling it) of the original stories in ep 3, which made me want to see what other changes they have made. Not bad at all. It also helps that I really like this version of admiral Zhao; the actor’s been my favorite part of this series so far. Also also, I know I’m repeating myself here but I like the way they keep accentuating prince Zuko’s teenager-ness mixed with his understandable obsession with honor. (Man, every damn time think about Zuko and his honor, the stupid song from anthpo’s ‘every episode of avatar’ video automatically plays in my head lol!)
I like the set design as well. The incorporation of the Japanese style in Suki’s village in the last episode was quite beautiful in my eyes, and knowing that the original Avatar series took inspiration from many cultures in Asia, I was intrigued to see the set designs for the other parts of this fictional world in this live action series… which was why I was a bit sad when I initially decided to stop watching the Netflix series. The other reason was that I won’t be able to rewatch the remaining 6 episodes with you, fyi.
But I’ve been pleasantly surprised, and I’m excited to watch the fourth episode now. I should also thank you, because your commentaries and very thoughtful review are what really motivates me to watch the show myself first and try to appreciate the good parts without going “EHHH! This bad, this cringe, I’m outta here!”.

Just my perspective as someone who started and stopped the original series like 6 times but never really got into it, after watching this whole season…This ep was one of the strongest examples in the whole series of the pitfalls (from my perspective) of trying to condense 20 episodes (plus more, with certain elements from later books + the flashback/prequel stuff that wasn’t in the original show) down into 8 episodes. The Omashu storylines all could’ve hit so much harder with, like, 2-3 episodes to let the story from this one ep to unfold. More time to breathe and get immersed in all of this, more time for the Jet and Sai/Teo characters to mean more, all that.

This show doesn’t have shit on the original. Some of the castings are fantastic, and others are HUGELY miscast. We got discount Katara instead of a girl who knows how to act. We got characters that were teased at the end of season 1 or even introduced in season 2, that are introduced almost straight away in this first season… Azula in episode 3?? The fuck!? 🤦🏻‍♂️ They couldn’t even wait and just had to show firelord Ozai in episode 3 as well?? Instead of teasing him and building towards his reveal at the end of the season….That’s what was great about the og cartoon, they built him up and teased him in the background, but here there is no buildup or anticipation. It’s just bam there he is, right next to Walmart Azula. What she gonna do, foodbend her way to victory? 🤦🏻‍♂️ That actress does not embody the character at all, looks nothing like her and acts nothing like her, I bet a cosplayer could deliver better acting… terrible miscast. Don’t even get me started on Ty Lee and Mai… oh god what is that actress doing playing Mai? 😩 The three of them couldn’t act their way out of a paper bag, and they look THE LEAST like their animated counterparts. Why bring them in a whole season early anyway? Rather than take the time to cast those characters properly. It’s crazy how people will acknowledge the excellent casting of Aang, Zuko and Sokka, but won’t acknowledge the horrible miscasts of some of the female actresses. 🤦🏻‍♂️
Even commander Zhao sucks ass, has no intimidation AT ALL. He feels like he belongs in the live action movie. 🤣 Iroh looks the part, but unfortunately does not act the part. Honestly they’ve changed things that did not need to be changed, and have NOT improved the story by doing so. Aang meeting Kyoshi before Roku? Why? Downgrading part of what made the OG story work so well. This is the kind of crap I’d expect from the Disney channel. Sorry but I wont be watching season 2, which hopefully it doesn’t get the green light for anyway.

the 3 fire nation girls are hardly the only ones who don't really look like their CARTOON counterparts in this whole series. Also imagine thinking Ozai was literally anything but a bland bad guy. Threatening? Sure. But he was bland. And who cares that Aang meets Kyoshi first? The show made good of him meeting the past avatars in a order. This show is easily only one or two steps behind the one piece live action. This is just being sour that it's not the cartoon, but guess what, it wasn't trying to be, but you couldn't even understand that lmao
