Flounder (fluke) Fishing with bucktails and Berkley Gulp. Underwater view in Long Island Sound. This supplements chapter 11 in my book, Fishing the Bucktail tinyurl.com/Fis...
Absolutely stunning video. What a treat I have to say. After 50 years of fishing (I'm 56) and wondering what exactly is going on below the surface and trying to picture it a million times, here it is. WOW! It alone has taught me so much. Technology is a wonderful thing when used for good. Keep up the incredible work John. That's coming from a former Television producer by the way. (I even produced a fishing show but all the action was on the surface 20 years ago unless you had a diver with a camera and even that was a major project.) - Jeff
This video completely changed my views on flounder fishing. Down here in TX we usually head hook and tail hook a large shrimp, usually with treble hooks. Then practically drag on the bottom for flounder. More often than not I've snag hooked flounder rather than mouth hook. Now I'm going to try this method, I had no idea they would chase their prey.
I love your videos, John! Very instructional for any angler. Bucktails with various trailers are my favorite way to to fish for Stripers and Flounder and with your videos you're able to see how the fish hunts and strikes the bait. Very cool! Keep them coming and keep on fishing!!
John, Great vids! This is the way we fish them on the eastern Shore of MD and VA! These shots re-enforce a tactic we use to miss less fish. When you feel them hit, drop that rod tip and let them chew on it for a few seconds. When the line pulls tight again and they are still there, set the hook. There are a lot of misses in this video. You can see the fish take the lure and chew his way up to the hook. Especially the bigger ones. Very nice quality and thanks for posting it!
Love this stuff. Can't stop watching it. That flounder at the beginning is really gettin' it. He's either the Carl Lewis of flatfish or he hasn't eaten in weeks.
Wow, I'm so surprised at how many times the fish fails to actually eat the bucktail. Got to be something wrong. There wouldn't be any Flounder if they were that poor at catching prey. Wonder if it's size or feel or what? That's the question I come up with. Also thanks for this excellent video. This could not have been easy to capture. Really well done.
I live in NC, I've been using your rig for quite sometime now tipped with live mud minnows and to my amazement this works quite well. A lot of the ol salts down here use the Carolina rig set up. They look at me with that "Damn Yankee" look every time I pull one over the pier rails lol.....Although I have noticed that their rigs bring in the doormats and all of my flounder are undersized so I guess their way you can expect a bigger flounder than with this rig. Anyways, Great videos please keep them coming! Tight lines......
Wow, another great video John, God bless and happy fishing, keep the informative videos coming, I have subscribed, thanks again, by the way, I'm in Texas
I'm not sure why anyone would do that. If you watch my numerous fluke jigging videos, you'll see us hooking up easily by setting the hook as soon as weight is felt. The underwater video shows that if you miss them, they'll just keep coming at it.
I really enjoy your videos, they are very informative. I do have one suggestion though. If you could do a split screen of the underwater action along with you fishing. That would show rod action and bait presentation together. I think that would be really helpful. Thanks for taking the time to put together these videos. It is nice to have uncommon knowledge so freely shared.
John, fluke bug caught me early this year so I'm reviewing all your excellent videos. If you're taking requests, maybe this year you can try some single jig + 6" gulp grubs and see if you can cull the bigger fish. I've found big mantis shrimp in keeper-size fluke, and esp early season before baitfish forage comes around the big grubs tend to score nice fish for me.
Fantastic book. Neat to see the video work too I'm wondering what your camera rig that was used to film this was, I assume it's a GoPro, but curious about how you rigged it up to film the bait this way. Thanks!
wow, i thought flounder would only hit a bait if you dropped it on their nose, i had no idea they would folllow a bait at all, much less for this long! also, im sure plenty surf fishermen will agree how scary it is to wade out into the surf a little then step on a flounder, feel it go crazy, then swim away.
Great video!!!! I go fishing in long beach island new jersey in a bay and their not that many flounder that bite on my spering and the ones that do are like 12 inches... what would be a good color bucktail and gulp mullet be to get more flounder were theirs not that many?
Hey John, love your videos...Started vertical jigging with spro bucktails this summer...2 flounders at 4 pounds each off cape may...want to start making my own...any advice on where to get a kit and supplies...I'm addicted now haha
what kind of contraption are you using for the camera. I'm a big flounder fisherman down in south jersey shore and always wanna see this myself. the water has been extremely clear
Hi John, after 8 years of watching this vid when it first came out I find myself watching it again and trying to learn from it. Can you please share how you set up the camera to capture the video? I would like to do the same to see how my fishing is under the water. Thanks!
Hi John Where are you off Long Island fishingI just bought a Hobie PA 14 and hope to get out the next fluke season I am in Long Island near Long Beach in Smithtown Thanks John
so my grandfather taught me how to flounder fish and he always told me once you get a nibble or a bite, to give the line slack, count to 20, then reel in the slack and if you still feel him there set the hook. what would you recommend?
+trayse_jordan If we're taliking summer flounder, AKA fluke, as shown in this video, please watch this and it will answer your question czcams.com/video/tmaxcwpHCFo/video.html
I would like to just know how exactly your filming this...I'm assuming your using a go pro but do you just it hanging in the water with a rope or something
Your videos are awesome. How did you film that? Anyway, I tried some of your tips for fluke. I was in Sandy Hook NJ. Not a darn bite. I ended up getting snappers and called it a day. Please tell me you do not REALLY catch THESE MANY FISH in a row.If so, there must be an abundance of fish in your area; or, you must truly be "the man", especially with all the stripers you get. Thanks for the videos. Although I didn't catch anything, I still think the videos are very helpful. Thumbs up!
hi John, i have been fishing out of my rec kayak and want to purchase a fishing kayak. i mostly fish n. shore LI bays and sound. what do you suggest as a good all around fishing kayak? thanks
i never knew that flounders are so active. i thought they just lie there waiting for something to get close.... great video, good luck !

With your tech knowledge, you should do some fishing vids
Thanks for sharing your know how on this subject. Please continue your unselfish way of educating your fans. Thanks again.

Cool shot at 2:22 of the flounder encountering a crab.
Excellent video! I love seeing the baits in action and how the fish react to them! Very helpful and very cool!
Great movie!! Every fisherman who aim for fluke should watch!
best advice iv ever gotten for fishing. i'v out fished everyone using this type of set up while others use cut bate.
Great comment about the fluke following and setting the GPS.

This is such an amazing video! You should really be nominated for some kind of award. Thank you!
What can I say except Thanks!! This is priceless info.. you are very generous person,, again, Thanks Bro! 👍
very nice video. great action! I already use gulp and bucktails, but I am gonna try the jig shake!
Same here. I usually get a lot of trout with it
outstanding video! really good to see how these fish feed. I never pictured flounder following the bait so far and still hit.
Sweet underwater videos. They are my favorite.
Still one of the best videos on youtube
Thanks. It was quite a contraption that recorded it.
Outstanding video. Thanks for hitting my imagination up-side the head with your reality.
Awesome video
Great perspective! Got a nice laugh at 2:22 when the fluke ran into a crab, Ouch!
The crab going after the fluke at 2:23 was really cool footage.
Incredible, I gotta have more of this. Truly enlightening video.
Thanks for the video! I've fished for these before but I never knew that they actually chase the lure for such a long distance.
Best video i ever seen!!!! On this bucktails and flunders
That crab at 2:22 was like, "Bro, you totally had that."
Very interesting....great video John!
John this is great stuff I appreciate all your work (books, videos, etc/) and your love of the sport. Keep up the great work!!!
We're making frequent touches of the bottom to make sure we're down. If we have to keep letting line out, we'll go heavier.
Outstanding video

Yes, and they're very durable.

FANTASTIC VIDEO, THANKS FOR SHARING
I use the Doit Ultra Minnow mold (3/4,1,1.5-ounce) and gamakatsu 604 hooks sizes 5/0, 6/0, 7/0
Wow, another great video John, God bless and happy fishing, keep the informative videos coming, I have subscribed, thanks again, by the way, I'm in Texas
Excellent video !!!!!!!
Ohhh ok thank you very much and good fishing!
We fish 1- to 1.5 ounce in upto 30 feet, but with light tackle and 15#-test line.

2:21 Hello, crab.
Great video! Looks like you need to start running a trailer hook. . .

That's a nice size
same rig
12 inches
Would love to see this done in different areas, for different target species, fresh and salt water.

Stick them in a ziploc bag and they'll be fine as long as they don't dry out. I travel with them this way.
what kind of contraption are you using for the camera. I'm a big flounder fisherman down in south jersey shore and always wanna see this myself. the water has been extremely clear
Although the spro is used here for fluke/ flounder fishing, you prefer the smiling bill when casting for striped bass and bluefish, correct?
2.23 the fish swims straight at a big crab lol
So it looks like you guys keep the bucktail up off the bottom rather than bouncing it on the bottom. Is that part of your success?
Hi John, after 8 years of watching this vid when it first came out I find myself watching it again and trying to learn from it. Can you please share how you set up the camera to capture the video? I would like to do the same to see how my fishing is under the water. Thanks!
It was a goPro attached to a crude sled made from a dowel, a ruler, sinkers, and cable ties.
Hi John
Where are you off Long Island fishingI just bought a Hobie PA 14 and hope to get out the next fluke season I am in Long Island near Long Beach in Smithtown
Thanks
John
Looks like a lot of hits on the bottom bait that never get hooked....Trailer hook?
white is fine.
2.24 flounder has a fun in with a crab haha
Hi John. Great video, thanks for posting. How fast was your drift?
John, that's excellent! How were you able to follow the lure with a video camera?
Great video, Was this six mile? looks like east end I've done a bit of flukin there.
Hi John great video what kinda camera is that
Did you see that massive spider crab at 2:08?
awesome
I might of missed u saying this but how far up is the swimming mullet from the bucktail
so my grandfather taught me how to flounder fish and he always told me once you get a nibble or a bite, to give the line slack, count to 20, then reel in the slack and if you still feel him there set the hook. what would you recommend?

Although I didn't catch anything, I still think the videos are very helpful. Thumbs up!
can i use a bass jig because they dont sell bucktail near me
I fish in assawoman bay in ocean city, where It is very shallow, and I have yet to catch a flounder. Any tips?
do you think glup shrimp would also work?(north shore LI)
Great video - which camera ?
And how to you keep the gulps from drying out later ?
I use gulp from the buckets, so I just put them back in the juice. The camera is a gopro on a custom underwater contraption.
I spilled my gulp scent but salvaged the mullets will they still be effective? thanks
hi John, i have been fishing out of my rec kayak and want to purchase a fishing kayak. i mostly fish n. shore LI bays and sound. what do you suggest as a good all around fishing kayak? thanks
Could you do this in the south bay?
How did you rig your camera in this video to get this footage?
I wish I could catch this many fluke were I fish their hard to find
