I don't remember the movie, but this... this I remember. One of the best pieces of music ever written, if you ask me (you did ask me, didn't you? good).
My take is that it was successful and he did forget but all that pain remained. So now he’s just a broken man with no understanding of why he feels the way he does.

Because the whole thing started because he talked too much about a rumour in which the sister was pregnant with the brothers baby. So the sister had to die. It’s a revenge story but on the main character. They trick him into also becoming incest with his daughter without him knowing as it’s been 15 years. When he learns that, he thinks they will kill his daughter as the sister died so he cuts his tongue off to save his daughter as it was his tongue that started it all by talking
Wonderful, Amazing ! One of my favourite film ever. Great soundtrack, A Masterpiece movie.

His expression goes from happy to anguished so I don't think there's much ambiguity here. He clearly remembers and is horrified by it.
