IMPORTANT NOTE: A BIOS update was uploaded yesterday that enables the MUX switch on the X17. It is kinda janky since you need to enable the MUX in the BIOS and turn it off to have Optimus (Lenovo and Asus have much simpler solutions to this), but it does give you the extra performance on the 4K and 1080P screen options.

finally!
That's amazing!
Lol!

as far as i know asus does not have a mux switch on most of their current laptops. you have to bypass it with a external monitor.
They did the same thing in the m15 R5 too - adding the MUX switch with a BIOS update. Clearly the underlying hardware was there all along and they were just using it for the panels that had G-Sync support, so it's good that they just gave the option to all of them, but weird they didn't just do it from the start because now all the reviews end up consistent leading to customer confusion.
Ayyy Jarrod. The one man with all the laptop reviews you would need.
Customer confusion is one of Dell's specialties
They also later on added support to my Dell G15 laptop ^
They'd enable it sooner if you just got the financing. 😆
Well said Jarrod
This video might as well be titled "Dell FINALLY figures out how to cool a laptop after 15 years of burning bricks"
Not exactly. I have a Dell 7567 and it's 3-4 years old. It's running cool as hell. 80 C under heavy load with rare jumps to 85.
In light tasks I don't even hear the fan. It's damn quiet. Newer models have this issue where just watching a Netflix would wake up the vents.
The problem with Dell is not their cooling methods (which works), but rather, their fan profiles, which seems to wait until the CPU is almost melting to crank itself up.
@@bogdanionut7768 bruh I wanna know what black magic your one does. My 7567 reaches 94 celcius a few minutes after gaming even at an underclock of both cpu and GPU through throttlestop and afterburner
And still fucks it up.
i have an alienware 17 r5 from 2018, and this is true (my gpu reaches 80C while playing minecraft with 12 chunk distance)
No trackpoint!
3:25 - another benefit, the mux is also what takes the hit instead of the GPU when Apple puts the 52v power line next to the 1.7v image data line. Much prefer to replace a 9x9 ball chip than a 900+ one :) I'm surprised most laptops don't use this when Apple has been since.. 2008 at least actually. That is cheap and lazy. I almost appreciate Apple design here.
no replies on THE Rossmann's comment? we're better than this, people! here, take mine louis. no need to thank me.
Lol the man the myth the legend himself! I didn't know apple were generous enough to include a MUX switch since 2008!
Bob of All Trades, a small time youtuber, now Elutroniks head of R&D also always pushed for a MUX switch on all laptops with a dGPU. The repairablity point of view is something I hadn't thought of and it makes so much sense! The addition of a MUX should be insignificant interms of cost, a 9x9 IC + a few extra lines. The added functionality, performance and repairability are just game changing.
Also Louis, turns out Alex being the unprepared dude has been wrong about the MUX switch. This X17 does have a MUX switch. He says it in the X15 video.
Rofl, you fail to mention that Apple isn't good for playing games on and that it also has MASSIVE thermal problems making it throttle almost non-stop. Laptops today are NOT made to replace failed parts outside of manufacturer repairs (one thing you are fighting for and ty for that) so which part you replace is a mute factor. Couple that with a lack of parts available today and the fact the entire board is changed out instead of trying to find the problem on the board and repair it isn't the focus on design. The MAIN issue with gaming laptops since I've been buying them since 1995 has ALWAYS been thermal throttling...and Alienware has FINALLY solved that issue! The MUX performance issue isn't nearly as important as the cooling improvement to the person gaming all day so I'm going to give Dell a pass on that one.
I really like it when desktop replacement laptops have rear-mounted IO, it makes the desk less cluttered and there's more room for your external mouse, which you are probably going to use if you plan on gaming.
Nice pfp

The mux was unlocked in a recent BIOS update.
The delivery experience with this sucks though, if you buy a custom config. I had two delays come up. Some people I've asked have had 3 and upwards to 4 months because of the shortage.

Exactly this. I’m waiting on mine aswell after delays. If you email them you might be able to get some money refunded due to the delays.
The fact that is PHYSICALLY THERE and they fucking locked it on a $3000+ laptop is absurd. Good thing they got their mind right
Leadtime for laptops suck for pretty much all brands that has a custom config. AFAIK the display shortage is really hitting them hard.

I still despise alienware for their prebuilt pcs but honestly they're really stepping it up with their laptops. Gotta give credit where credit is due, good job dell.

7:10 I love that you can easily upgrade storage and ram, in general, in the previous version, the RAM was soldered
Having good expansion slots was the reason I bought a ASUS TUF Gaming A17, it had 2 M.2, replacable M.2 WiFi card, 2 RAM slots and a 2.5inch bay.
lol...upgrade m2 to m2.........why no 2.5 ssd
@@subliminaljuggernaut7278 Having two M.2 slots is a lot better, a lot higher speeds, and you can have more store in 2 M.2 NVME 2280 than in one SATA SSD 2.5 inch (in speeds we are talking around 3500mb/s in PCIe 3.0 or around 7000 to 8000 in PCIe 4.0 and if you have 2 drives in RAID 0 speed is combined, that way if you really had the money you can have 16TB of SSD up to 6800mb/s vs the around 500mb/s per drive you can have in sata, cost per GB is similar and one is optimized for HDD so is not ideal for SSD and is a lot slower compared to the upcoming minimum common denominator that are console ssd speeds that range from around 3500mb/s Xbox Series to around 5000mb/s of PS5.
So in the end around same price, a lot slower and too big, usually it translate in considerable smaller batteries which most prefer as big as possible.
So... all cons and no positives
@@Pro720HyperMaster720 Thank you for the input, youve given me something to consider. however I feel that the weight of a 2.5 ssd is negligable compared to the benefit that the storage can provide. m.2 will always be inferior capacity.
if im paying $5000 for a laptop i want it to have storage beyond 4tb or at least have the ability to have a 2.5 ssd slot.
upgradability is what makes a perfect laptop. can you belive that dell soldered the ram in the m17 ? and that it was badly designed prone to overheating? thats where dell is going wrong...its making pretty laptops with stupid design flaws. at $5000 at unit it needs better thinking.
@@subliminaljuggernaut7278 theorically yes, in practice no, per drive lets asume an M.2 is half the size but two things happen, first, in the space that requires a 2.5 disk drive you can fit 2 m.2 and due be two separate units can be arrange in more efficient ways so it doesn’t affect space inside for battery nowhere near as much as 2.5 inch drive, you can still found near 100wh batteries (maximum legal to flight) with 2 m.2 unlike with 1 2.5 inch drive.
2nd and most important. M.2 is the future and it gets major industry focus, literally before a final name was decided M.2 was officially refered as NGFF that literally means Next Gen Form Factor, that leads to more effort putted in, so the maximum size offered right now is 8TB for both M.2 and 2.5 inch SSD (HDD top on 5TB in this category) so if you plan in spending $5000 in a laptop you can easily get a RTX 3080 laptop and 16TB of M.2 SSDs.
Look 2.5 SSD have the next problem, in the consumer space are limited to SATA, a standard that is not going to improve their speeds as already stated by its organization, is a conector and a protocol which is meant for HDDs which leaves inefficiencies but nothing serious, the things is, is a dead standard.
Consumer space will be taken over by M.2 NVME
While in server/datacenter space before was SATA and SAS, now is mostly SAS with a little M.2, SAS continued improving speeds and is compatible with the NVME protocol, you can find SAS NVME drives. So today SATA drives lives for legacy, HDDs and cheap SSDs and some times the difference in price is minimal or non existent, btw the ones that definitely going to not be sold in the near future are M.2 SATAs.
Sorry for the big text but look I also a couple of years ago preferred having an 2.5 inch drive but now I can’t see any benefits, m.2 offers maximum store but in maximum capacities is more expensive although a step below they are similar prices a lot faster and allowing bigger batteries, AND I forgot to mention that manufactures don’t usually like 2.5 inch drives in high end laptops because people may use HDDs (which I like in desktops while a lot more space is cheaper) that have a huge problem in laptops, drives with moving parts not get along well with moving devices so they get easily damaged that lead to a direct not working drive or going much slower, and consume a lot of energy, in the user side should mostly not be used internally in a laptop having options with more space in SSDs).
And I talking to you having right know a 4TB SATA 2.5 inch drive, installed on my desktop but mi daily driver laptop is a ThinkPad T480 which lets you choose 2.5 inch or M.2 without sacrificing battery thanks to the dual battery system with an option for the 2nd to be high capacity protruding outside like a stand-off, unfortunately they no longer sell laptops like this which easily let you have what you want without sacrifices. The most similar things is to have a laptop that can charge though USB-C so you can use a power bank to compensate the smaller inside battery due to a 2.5 inch slots
You guys are awesome, working so hard on these super high-quality professional reviews on these devices. When he said he's starting on the next review tomorrow, it reminded me of how much constant work gets put into these videos. Thanks to all of you people! I look forward to the next one.
The speakers can sound AMAZING when you tweak the audio settings in the alienware app.
Yeah I did tune mine as well in my HP OMEN 15 and it sounds amazing when the reviewers said they were pretty average. But still Dell should really put better speakers in their Alienware laptops they should sound much better for how much premium one is paying to get one
What is the other laptop that sounded better, Legion 7?
Omg whoever shot the b role close up of the main board and cooling solution has my eternal respect. Simply Beautiful 😍

I know they’re for different purposes technically, but I’m curious how this compares to the new XPS17?
@@rustler08 i actually prefer a 17. I'm 6'4" and definitely not tiny. Weight is almost a nonfactor for me on a portable lol. The new xps did seem tempting since you can get it with the mega I9 and a 3070. But if they're within a couple 100 bucks or so the alien 👽 is compelling.
bro, you and anthony make my fav vids these days. like.. i love the whole crew but.. keep it up doods. you guys rock.
That was a really nice shot from the cooling solution. Reaaaally liked that one
9:00 ok, that was a REALLY nice shot.
I have the previous x17 with an Intel i7 and 3080. That with the 4k and built in Tobii eye tracking. It's frigging amazing and I'm glad I got it before this new revision. It's a great upgrade from my previous pc- a $400 2011 Toshiba Laptop
Saving up for the MSI 17" 3080 i9 laptop. Also, never been a fan of RAID-0 setups, I could be using 1Tb for OS and main programs / games and a 2 or 4 Tb for secondary programs or storage. RAID-0 gain is minimal.
I feel the same way about an AMD CPU option. Team Red's power efficiency is just off the charts. I wouldn't go without AMD in a Laptop anymore

I would agree if it weren’t for the fact that 99% of ryzen products don’t support thunderbolt.

Yeah for some actual reasons I am actually glad its not amd, however intel could make a better job producing chips better fitting smaller battery dependent devices instead of making this inefficient garbage, I mean its not a rocket science, I guess it would cost too much money to actually invest in it
This was a really good review and I would love to see even more like it. Great presentation style and informative comparisons. Keep it up!

Great points and im excited to see how the knockoff does.
Regarding the trackpad its probably less of a downside than it seems. If you're using your gaming laptop for gaming you're probably already (or should be) using a mouse in which scenario a smaller wrist obstruction makes a little more sense imo.
Ywa i Think the trackpad is like is just for an emergency anyway
Laptops usually have palm rejections on trackpads so accidental presses aren’t a problem.
I just ordered the Alien x17 today. 6 Months from you making this video. But the regular price in now $3,250, But I caught a sale that saves me $1,050. I got this with 32GB Memory and the Display that give me the "AKA, Fancy MUX Switch". My laptop, which shall not be named, is in the shop and I'm hopeful that I can retrieve my files and I need my replacement pretty quickly. I was just about to put in my card info for the Legion 7i, based on review and price.... plus it has the number pad I want, tho not the 17.3 screen I'm used to, but it said it would take me *4+ Months* to be shipped!!!! LIKE WHAT!!!!. So the Alienware won this battle for my pocket with a less than 2 week ETA. I had a really hard time deciding between the two. But here's to getting my new laptop in less than 2 weeks. It's by far a huge cry of an upgrade from my 7-8 year old laptop. I couldn't go wrong either way.
I had one of the old big alienware laptops before Dell, was like jumbo jet inside volcano, but those were the good days, gaming and playing wow with my bro's
You guys really should include more macro shots, they look amazing

Even though the new R2 is out, I picked up the R1 last week for $1195 off retail...from DELL. My wife has the R1 and mostly likes it so I was looking at the R2 but the prices are insane right now so for giggles I started playing around in the configurator for the R1 and when I clicked on the 360mhz screen, some other options were chosen automatically (3080, 32gb, per key lighting) and the discount was wild. I know they sometimes try to get rid of NOS but I had only seen discounts of maybe 300 or so until now. Not only was this thing nearly 1200 dollars off but it was ready to ship! It took 2 days after ordering to get it in hand. That's rare for Dell. So, it's time to retire my trusty Clevo P870TM1 for some new firepower. :)

Oh my... That shot at 9:00 was nice! Was that a probe lens?
It's weird that it seems it's amazing on everything that makes a desktop great and falls short on the laptop aspects (small trackpad kinda making you go to mouse, monitor is necessary to bypass MUX, less efficient Intel CPU messing with the battery life). If you dock it with a monitor and a mouse, it looks flawless.
Well they really took the "desktop replacement" seriously tho.
Please do a video of the "perfect Frankenstein laptop" - What component you'll take from different laptops in order to build the ultimate gaming laptop?
It doesn't really work like that. In laptops, a lot of the parts are custom for the system it's going in, you can't just interchange them like desktop components.

I got my M15 R5 a month ago and I've been loving it
I think dell is rolling out bios updates to the X17 that enables the mux switch for both the low end 165hz panel and the higher end 4k one
Not sure about the low end one.
They literally say with the details of the new BIOS (version 1.3.0.):
- Added Enable Hybrid Graphics/Advanced Optimus (when available) option in BIOS Setup Menu on systems with non-DDS UHD LCD panels.
The low end one isn't a UHD panel so don't get your hopes up too much. It would be nice if they did the same for the low end FHD 165Hz panel though but it doesn't seem like they added support in this specific BIOS version.
@@CheapBastard1988 correct if I'm wrong , but I think they made the mux switch usable with the FHD 165hz display in a previous update that's why version 1.3.0 specifies that the feature is coming to the UHD panel only
@@jihedjoe1 You're right. They did this in version 1.2.1. released in August. I didn't notice it because the Dell website doesn't make earlier BIOS versions easy to find.
I like how crab rave is Alex's standard audio test.
for a sort of quick and dirty test, it makes sense to me, especially for testing "compact" speaker arrangements, since it has pretty heavy bass playing alongside some crisp high notes.
And we've heard it so many times now that it makes it easy to compare. I hope they never change it.
Did you just buy a macro probe? That macro shot of the cooling coming out of nowhere is just AMAZING!
Dell uses those keys in some of the Precision laptops too. It's crazy good for a keyboard like this in a laptop.
Serious question: how did they figure out that the issue was the MUX? Was it documented somewhere or was it by deduction?
That's a good question
Simple, connecting to an external monitor through a port that's directly connected to the 3080 bypasses Optimus, which is what a MUX switch does, only with regards to the laptop's display. If the performance increases with this method, it means that the lack of a MUX switch is what's lowering the performance.
@@edvinjohnson4136 well put. Thank you. I also realized from your reply that Dell has a name for the feature which means you can look through the bios to see if the feature is available.
Im rocking the i9 3080 version of the x17. I gotta say this thing was damn impressive before the MUX switch activated. Now its hands down the best gaming machine I have ever owned. I love the fact that it's portable as well as powerful. I strongly recommend snagging one if you can.

Nice looking machine, and the specs are very good for a laptop.
That said, I had a gander at my country's Dell website to check the prices, and it's very expensive over here. Nearly double the price of my new gaming rig. I guess the price is understandable as you get a lot for the price, but still WAY outside my price range if I were in the market to get a new laptop.

I imagine most of us didn't even know what a mux switch was, never mind how essential it is (and how much of a bottleneck it is for potential super expensive high end laptops), he's doing us all a great service!
On paper it's very cheap component too. There is a small chance they cut it because of how little space they had on the motherboard (with all those fans taking space) but i doubt they didn't have the engineering to make it work if they wanted to. it's just not a marketable spec so they knew it didn't matter for their sales.

Yeah, still 4k over a god damn GTX 1080. And 7th gen i7.
I’ve seen way cooler laptops than that. The laptops I saw were wearing sunglasses
Looking forward to the Eluktronics review!
Those heat pipes were so impressive, they brought out a genuine "Frig"
Wasn’t Dell going to commit to supporting swappable Graphics cards in Alienware laptops via something like MXM?
That's with the Area 51m line. Those laptops use desktop grade components and is the reason why they're replaceable. It's hardly a laptop thanks to it's size and weight and that's where this guy comes in.
@@jaylen11000 had Dell provided new components for that chassis? Those debuted with 20-series GPUs and 9th gen Intel processors. If not, looks like another attempt at desktop-level upgradability in laptops has failed.
@@c4sualcycl0ps48 I do believe that they updated the CPUs to 10th gen, but I don't think we've gotten RTX 30 cards in them yet
Well you pay for the Alienware badge
TIME STAMP: 10:45 Love the Honesty and the shot across Intel's Bow.. I own Intel stuff but truthfully Intel does have to throw a lot more power at their chips to keep them in the same Ballpark..
Had a 2015 Dell Precision and replaced it recently with a 2021 model. Huge increase in performance. Huge decrease in fan noise. 8 to 12 hours per day of heavy CAD work and I've yet to hear the fans turn on. Previous model had 1/2 the power and never used it with the fans off. Dell figured out something about cooling laptops recently.
“You know what never underperforms?”
The skip button.
It was like Michael Dell--in the early days of Dell--walked into R&D, brought a baseball bat down on a desk hard enough to break it, and said "Make it dead easy to service. Am I clear or do I need to bring in a new bat and perform percussive maintenance?" then mounted the broken bat on the wall for all to see. ...and I have rarely found a challenge to that in the last twenty-plus years.
(I once had to replace the screen on a second-hand laptop that was *STILL* covered by them under their 'CompleteCare' warranty even though the policy was under the old owner's name and it was couriered to me ASAP, complete with a shipping label in the package to send the old one back. I followed the step-by-step instructions that they provided me and had it done in a snap. What happened to the laptop? #1 son fell asleep with it on his bed and it fell off. That wasn't an issue until #2 son woke up in the middle of the night and stepped on the screen. Dell's response? No problem. They said that they would even send a tech TO MY HOUSE the next day to fix it for me. Whoa! Colour me a fanboy!)
I have a problem. I performed a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit on my P650RP NP8152 laptop. Windows Startup freezes, I'm unsure what that's about but I can't boot the system due to the freezing.
9:45 Wait a minute, do all LMG employees have their own assigned iFixit kits? That's amazing
I feel like legion 7 is heart broken right now with a little bit of crying
can some one suggest a laptop that can do light gaming/collage work/ editing under 1200 $
@Not RickRoII👇😍 ya if it was 2017 buddy nice try
Legion 5 from Microcenter. It's easily the best laptop you can buy right now in that price range.
@@faber3969 Does it has RTX 30 series?
@@killertruth186 Yes it has a RTX 3060
Might be able to switch a connector or create a mod. If it’s just a encoded data line, it should be possible or easy to tap off it
Legion 7i OOTB driver has issue that 3080 lock to 115W (even with performance mode enabled). My latest driver TS graphics score is 1500+ higher than the bar chart shown in the video
Lenovo even out RGBed alienware. That was like the one thing Alienware was good at!
I have the Lenovo 7i… even with just a 2070 mine can run Cyberpunk on the highest possible settings. I never have to worry about if a game will run or not.
Did you get the on-site extended plus pro deluxe warranty package with the super Dell financing subscription? You really need that to get the most out of this computer.
Got the Legion 7i with 3070 and it is absolutely wonderful! Pros over the X17: cost, more ports, numpad, non-inverted MOBO, 2k display, same thermals. Only con: no SD card slot.
No numpad was one of the reasons I went for the Dell G15 Ryzen Gaming Edition 5800h and 130w 3060 over the equivalent Alienware... I use it for business mainly excel and I play ms flight simulator 2020, along with emulators so a numpad is a must.. I love the Dell G15
After looking at laptops like these inside, always leads me to think why can't we make smaller desktops? Make a detachable version of the cooling system for laptops, and make the CPU exchangeable, and make the GPU its own seperate card so it's also replaceable and upgradeable. Then you'd be able to have a slim minimalist desktop pc. I know not all of you want that, but some of us do.
Laptops are smaller desktops….
Isn't that the idea of something like an Intel NUC
@@bensundheim7057 yes it is
Mini itx stuff is what your looking for I do wish to see more of it.
although the trackpad is smaller its not like your gonna play games with a trackpad your always better off with a separate mouse
Aye.

Some gaming laptops has decent trackpads enough that you can actually game on. But I always preferred to use my wireless mouse.
Alex sneaking in that Crab rave in from Short Circuit
I just bought an m17r4 back in september, and it's arriving tomorrow, am I missing anything? It's got the rx3060, 32 gigs of ram, and 2 2 tb ssds in rade0. I'm mad they removed the numbpad in the x17 though.
What do you expect? Dell is into the next level!

For those who are wondering: When added all together, the Harry Potter books contain 1,084,171 words.
i think you are off by 1
Can someone help me?
Should my PC be boosting to exactly 4.5ghz if that's what it is set for or is 4.492ghz a reasonable boost for a CPU rated for 4.5?
Alex couldn't resist a bit of crab rave could he?
you never appreciate cooling until your in a quiet classroom on google docs and then the fans ramp up for no reason like they do on every ASUS laptop
I’ve had 3 asus laptops since 2010 and they’ve all been super quiet. Loud fan noise was the main reason I got rid of my old Razer Blade and went back to asus.
The flaw is it's not a framework
So everything has to go through the IGPU, and as the dell xps 7950 1080p has shown, be blurry somehow. Why would dell not fix this? Or have I missed some magicl technology that fixes it?
Guys. I have an x17 and got the new bios, how do I enable the MUX switch? The only thing it says here is Enable Hybrid Graphics, and it’s already Enabled… does this mean I’m good? Or do I disable Hybrid Graphics
