    You are absolutely right. Regarding P1000, we could see that more than 70%of reviews are with negative comments. But the truth is one should know how to use it. Unfortunately many are after its small sensor !

    Nice review - often seen reviews moaning about the image quality when zoomed out to 6000mm with Digital zoom on a hot sunny day! I previously owned the P900 until it bounced down some stairs and am now looking at the P1000. Great shots at the end and your review cemented my decision - many thanks.

    Great commentary. Just purchased the P950 and really enjoy it. Yes, if you pixel peep it’s easy to get get hung up on image quality. But this camera allows me to obtain images that I could have never taken before. Well worth the money and the small inconveniences.

      I picked up LUMIX. FZ 1000. It has a larger chip 400 zoom but can do macro and every thing. I have had it for years. It’s great. Small chips mean slower . I think these. Cameras are fun to have with super zoom. For a zoo visit. But it’s heavy and large. It’s just a very fun camera. Nikon glass is very good.

    Thank you thank you! An objective, down-to-earth, everyman analysis of the facts of what works best for most of us. I've been the DSLR route - had several grand invested in lenses. Pixel peeping was fun for a while. But then I went on an overseas vacation. Shot twice as many shots with my wife's little Canon point and shoot than with my DSLR. Aside from the convenience and limited usage of a quality phone camera, the small sensor superzoom point and shoots are a wonderful middle ground. I laugh at many dpreview reviews and comments from "upper crust" photographers, the pixel peepers of society who pan anything less than what they believe is top drawer based on their own narrow perception of the world.

      Thanks for subscribing and commenting. Yes, totally agree the market is pushing into 2 groups. Iphone's or full frame. Ease of use is something the camera companies have kind of forgot about or given up on. So many lost opportunities in my mind to create state of the art camera gear because of old traditions of not wanting to risk alienating your customer base. Reality is most people do not want to carry around a bag of lenses. When was the last time you seen some guy with a full DSLR taking family photos. 10 years ago it was a thing. Now there are like a 12 iphones right there and ready to go. The guy looks really outdated in many instances. Times have change definitely. Thanks again !

    I use a p1000 daily for mostly wildlife. I consider it an amazing wildlife observation “tool”. The image quality is really good as long as there is light. The downside is that wildlife is most active during the “golden hour”. I jokingly say you only get a golden half hour with the p1000. The camera struggles in low light. That being said, I love this camera. I hike and bike long distances and this camera is great...

    Thanks for doing this! I have been looking at the P1000 or P950. I have been doing a little wildlife photography lately with a Panasonic G85 and a 100-400mm lens and have found that in many cases I just wasn’t getting close enough. I really don’t want to spend tons of money for an even larger slow lens. But I kept reading reviews complaining about the IQ. Your thoughts and beautiful sample images are really helpful. Now I just have to decide between the P1000 and P950.

      Thanks for the kind comments. Many people have issues with point and shoots. Not me love them. 950 vs p1000 tough call my friend. If I had to choose I would take the p1000 it is heavier but I do use 3000mm belief it or not. My squirrel video coming out this week I shot some woodpeckers at over 25000mm FYI. Hopefully have it up by Saturday.

    Great photos at the end of the clip and good advice throughout. Personally, I love my Nikon P900, not so much for extreme distance where you collect a lot of atmospheric haze but closer in for mid distance smallish objects. Back in the day of film ISO was a problem and normally 400 was about as high as you went but even though the digital cameras can go much higher ISO I still think keeping that ISO to no more than 400 really helps in the quality of the image. Maybe a tripod is better than higher ISO for many applications, just remember to turn off your VR if using a tripod. Certainly not requiring a suite of lenses for this camera is a real bonus to the wallet; one lens does everything is a cool solution. I think every camera enthusiast should add either the P950 or P1000 to their gear. Used for its intended purpose it is unbeatable.

    Great review. I'm slowly going over the justification for replacing my camera and i was excited for the P950, but the Sony line with their huge sensors had gotten me into second-guessing whether it was good enough for my next few years. Meanwhile, most of my photography is outdoor on Pacific Northwest trails, so i really wanted to believe that the Nikon is good enough. I think it is. I also remember a few years ago... What my first 12mp photos looked like...
    I don't know if the Nikon shots will be good enough to show LARGE, but i don't have anyone begging me to fill a wall, at the moment.

      Yea, I would not worry about printing large my friend as it is enough. The larger the print the more distance by nature as it hangs on the wall. I have made prints and you can always up rezz the photog to like 50mp if you want with the great software they have now a days. It really is if it is more inline with what you can deal with the noise compared to the full frame cameras. Also thanks for watching.

    • @nerfytheclown
      @nerfytheclown Před rokem +1

      @@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE ... As i think i have decided; i can deal with the noise better than lugging a thirty pound camera bag through the woods. Besides: my money this year was all made on a P530. There's no bad choice for me though; for CoolPix money i could have a Leica 100-600 on a Panasonic... Granted, one that does not autofocus for anything... For a little more, i can get into full-frame-Sony Land...
      But at the end of the day, the one that does it all is the right one for the dude that's into everything.

    Thanks so much for your informative review of the four cameras. Do you always use a tripod with them? Do you have difficulty focusing with the P1000? When you use the P900, P950 and P1000, are you able to zoom all the way in bird watching mode? I have a B500 and it allows me to zoom to 900mm only in moon mode. The other modes only allow a 440mm zoom.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  Před 3 lety +1

      To be honest I never used the bird watching mode as other modes to me can give better results by lowering ISO. You can watch my P1000/P950 best settings and hopefully that will explain what I do. Also check out the rabbit video and prairie chicken videos for handheld and tripod use. I use bother. Focus can be an issue in low light. Focus is slower than DSLRs or mirrorless cameras but that is to be expected because they are cheaper.

    Hi Stafford, I like your video and have a question you might be able to guide me with. I'm an Engish guy living and working in northern Italy about 45 minutes from the mountians. I love to travel whenever we can but whenever we can we go to the mountians and lakes for walks, the scenery is absolutly breathtaking. For some time I have been looking at the P1000, it seemed to check all the boxes as a travelling camera, but also as a hiking camera for photography, video but also as an amazing monocular just to check out the stuff in the distance you cant see and decide which way to continue. However, the P950 was just released and now I am unsure which to go for? The technical gap between the two is small I believe, so the key differentiator is 3000mm vs 2000mm? Seeing the cameras in front of you also makes me consider the size as the P950 seems much more compact! So I'm not a bird or animal photographer, but nature generally, obviously photos in the mountians with these focal lenghts allows to create awsome images from a distance it would be hard to do within anything else.
    I would really like to hear what you have to say?
    Thanks John

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  Před 4 lety +2

      John, thanks for writing. So both the P950 and p1000 are great cameras. There is really no going wrong between the two of them. I would say if you are more into mountain hiking smaller is better. If you are more of the get out of the car with the camera multiple times then the p950 seems to travel a little better.
      There are a few things that the P1000 has going for it. The 3000mm lens is one of them. The viewfinder seems a bit wider and more open less cramped. Not that there is anything wrong with the P950 viewfinder it is good. The p1000 just seems a bit more spacious. If I am walking around in the woods where things are a bit cramped I take the P950. If I am birding out in the open fields or photographing animals that have a lot of space, ducks on water I would take the p1000. Again both are great, I have a tendency to take my p950 with me in hikes more than the p1000. If I am in a blind with less walking and travel I take the p1000. Hope this helps.

Reviews I've seen all say it causes vignetting but both have the same 24mm focal length. I don't know why the 1000 is a tulip and the 950 is kind of a silly little dish.

    I have the P900, what I missed is the raw capability, my 6 year old Lumix G6 has it. For birding I use both, but the manual control of the Lumix is unsurpassed! Besides, I use it with a Nikkor Reflex f/8.0 with a normal adapter or with the Viltrox 0.71X Speed Booster. Plus the G6 has the ability to add an internal 1.4X and 2.0X teleconverter (that is a sensor crop, not digital), so I come to the same 2000mm of the P900! This however without the raw. No pixel peep comparison done yet, but I'd like if you compare the P950 vs. the G9 with the Sigma 150-600.

      Thanks Baka, so if image quality is top priority then the Panasonic. If you need the lens focal range of 24 to 840mm then the Nikon. It really depends on different needs. The super zoom cameras are really in the class of their own. If you need zoom reach super zooms are the way to go. If you want slightly better quality go with a Panasonic point and shoot. To me I do not notice much difference between my Gx5II canon and my Nikon when shot in good light. I however only have 120 mm on the canon. So I mostly use the Nikon where ever I go because it is a better all around camera. I can basically do anything I want because of the zoom. You can increase image quality if you watch my other videos as I show tips on getting the highest quality possible.

      Well, I would say the smallest possible super zoom that you are happy with The p1000 is huge for a mountain hiking camera. The p950 is much smaller weight is much less as well. Also be careful these cameras will not take much banging on rocks FYI. 10K elevation with other gear you know any amount of weight really hits hard. So protect the camera and avoid rain that might freeze in the zoom mechanics. Hope this helps, my concern is how rough you might get with the gear if you have a bunch of other stuff packed in with the camera. Thanks for watching.

Just finished 45 minute workout I do 4 days a week to stay in mountain shape. I currently carry between 30-40 pounds, wife carries half that. I think in a dry pack inside center storage area of pack should keep safe and it will live on a tripod when in use. Elk are most active first and last hour of the day, would the 950 be able to take decent photo or video at 1000 yards? I know it will not be print quality at that range but would love more detail than my 12 power nl pures provide. Would something smaller be capable at that range? Price is not a concern, just weight and if I need to carry more weight to get the job done I would love your recommendation and we will just have to work out more. @@tyb3938 Dan, yep got to keep in shape mountain shape is different than other stuff, dang altitude just sucks your wind out of you. So your image quality will depend on your air quality, heat dispersions, mist, fog, rain. To be honest I never really taken photos out that far so not sure. I am sure thou that the camera can take good photos and is a nice choice. But good photos depends on your light and and technique FYI. You could go for some rougher 80x spotting scopes with an iphone adapter it is called digiscoping Look it up if you are not aware of it. No matter what you use to take a photo of an elk at 1000 yards quality is going to suffer just no way about it. So try not to have too high of expectations, bad air conditions even if you use the most expensive gear like sony 600mm you still going to have a bad image. So if you go that route practice taking photos long distance. Cold weather with little heat helps, no smoke, clouds ect. Stable tripod or put it on a rock ect. To sum it up the optics will not hold you back, I cant think of a camera that would give you much better resolution and clarity FYI. SO go for it and good luck !

    I'm torn between the p950 and Rx10 iii.
    Got the fz330 now and it's great but I want better photos at the longer range.
    Just feels like the fz photos can be a bit grainy at 600mm and pixelated when blown up.
    The Rx10 has the sensor but the 950 will take shots the rx can't get.
    Any input to help me decide would be appreciated.

      600mm sometimes isn't enough which makes me fancy the p950.
      But often it is enough, just not good enough quality. My photos look great on the phone, atrocious on the pc monitor.
      My thinking was could I slightly crop the Rx10 and get great pics and maybe the p950 with all its range is just going to look the same at 600mm as the fz330?
      Might be my ability to use the camera but I find anything over 500mm on the fz can be a bit rough on all but sunny days.
      Ofc I can fill the frame easier with the p950 and it will take shots the other two won't get.

      Having been out a few times lately i find most of my photo's are at 1200mm using izoom and although pretty bad on anything other than a phone screen, its that or a picture of a bird that looks about a mile away :)
      I thought i could get away with 600mm if it had better image quality but i just don't think i can.
      So got the P950 in my amazon basket but also feeling out an online retailer that i've not dealt with before and also weighing up using a voucher i have that will only be worth half as much because the p950 is a bit more at their store.

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE
      @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE  Před 3 lety +5

      Sue, there is pre-focus, continuous focusing and a bunch or other options. There is a slight art to focus as I find it the most difficult thing to use on the P950/p1000 cameras. So if possible test the lighting conditions and parts of the bird. Mostly for contrast meaning you might not need spot focus. So depending on the bird, I look for black and white and small focus on that as the sensor pics that up. Or aim the small sensor right at the edge of the bird and background so the sensor picks up the contrast as well. It takes time and you will learn that in some instance just go to manual focus assist with bright red highlighting and use that wheel on the side to nail focus. Believe me many times you can manual focus pretty quick. Hope this helps. Might put out a generic video on tricks with auto focus. Thanks again.

What I found out last week for at least me the Image Stabilize is better in the P1000 than the P950 for some reason. It might be because of the mass of the p1000 is bigger and more heavy that it allows for better hand holding at 2000mm.

If money is no problem then yes I would get a p1000. If money is an issue and you really really want the p1000 consider selling the p950. Again it depends on what you need. I would say within 2000mm the cameras are very close so upgrade is not a big deal. If you want one camera that can do everything the extra 1000mm is helpful.

    For the newer shooters, just be aware that these smaller sensors come with image noise. Despite the amazing benefits of these super zooms, at the end of the day just be aware that you really are trading between awesome zoom and image quality. You get one or the other, not both, at least not at this price point. And Photoshop can't save every image, just be ready for that. I have an old Olympus e-1 (an old 5 megapixel camera from 2003) that still cranks out better images and at a third of the megapixels. Why? The Olympus has a bigger sensor with less pixels that aren't crammed into each other causing distortion and light bleed. Since I have no need to make large prints, I can still squeeze use out of that old camera. Can it zoom into a bird 4 miles away? No. But it wins in image quality. So just be aware.

    The Catch-22 situation with cameras like these is that "in order to get good results you need to keep your ISO low, but that then forces the shutter speed to go down, which, unless you have an absolutely static bird (dead preferably!!!), is going to result in blurry pictures!! So take this advice with a pinch of salt! Unless you are shooting birds and wildlife under a very bright sun on a clear day, which is not encountered very often in real life, you would be disappointed with the final result!!

    • @MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE

      This is true, these point and shoot cameras do not focus fast enough or have the high ISO performance. of apsc or full frame. The trump card thou is that for compelling images you need alot of time with the subject and you need a camera with you at all times. It is no good if the 600m f4 is back in the car which, I have seen so many times. I rarely get good images of animals in split seconds. I usually have to be around them for multiple minutes and find the right composition to get an acceptable photo, thus fast shooting in my style shooting is not a requirements. Eye contact, angle, lighting all have to be there before I usually get a keeper and this all takes time.

      @@MAKE_PHOTOGRAPHS_ANYWHERE you are getting it all wrong, I'm afraid!! What i said about fast shutterspeed has nothing to do with fast shooting!!!
      It is just that if you are shooting birds then unless you use a significantly higher shutter speed, your photos will come out blurry due to minute body movements of birds.
      But in order to have that higher shutter speeds you need to raise your ISO, so as to balance the overall exposure and then you end up with grainy pictures!!!
      That is what I meant when I said that it is indeed a Catch 22 situation!!
