  • @nikomatallana4102

I became a Chipmunks fan before I even learned how to speak. I remember my abuela had an Alvin doll that she gave to me when I was four. In 2012, my parents rented Chipwrecked as a present. When I was in first grade, I would watch that franchise on repeat like a broken record. I am a Chipmunks fan. Now, looking back on the movies though, I see where critics are coming from. A lot of the humor can be a bit juvenile and crude, and some of the writing is a little predictable with the movies having no connecting tissue, but I just can’t help but feel that cozy sense of nostalgia I had with these characters ever since then and even when I started going back to the 80s cartoon. It’s in my collection and world of imaginative nostalgia in my head like Home Alone (1990), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), Baby’s Day Out (1994), We’re Back! A Dinosaur’s Story (1993), 90s Marvel cartoons, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Hulk (2003), and anything Don Bluth did.
And I think the stories that the movies gave us were great ideas! They just weren’t what I pictured entirely in execution. For example, in Chipwrecked, I would’ve liked it if we saw a little bit more of Alvin and Brittney’s relationship and dynamic. You have one that’s all about jokes and making everyone laugh and very hyperactive, and the other one acts like an irritable diva who, while very sweet, has as much of not an even bigger ego than Alvin. Alvin has an ego sure, but I always saw it has him having more of an artist full of ideas and focused on his own craft. A guy in his own la-La land. But when his family and friends are hurt, he’ll always be there and do whatever it takes to help. Even if it’ll get him in trouble. With Brittany, her selfishness is mostly due to vanity. Alvin’s a lot like my abuelito in which he’s very silly, stubborn and funny, but also sweet and loving. A man who’s care free. But Alvin is also a lot like my dad in which he has a sarcastic sense of humor and lives to make jokes. Which is also what I do sometimes now that I think of it. But another side of him that is like me is the fact that he uses humor and fun to push aside the stress that the world pressures him with. And simply, his own sadness and desires like wanting attention and being accepted by his own family and friends.
But anyway, back onto Chipwrecked, so finally when they end up on that Island, Brittney, Alvin, Jeannette, and Simon now have to take care of their siblings and keep them safe from any harm despite having some knowledge of nature to begin with. This can be where Brittney realizes that Alvin is really a person who has been through so much just like her since he and his brothers lost their parents at a young age, bullied for being a goof, and how he uses his humor to deflect from that. And simply, just someone who wants a friend. But secretly is too socially awkward to brave through his shyness around others. This is where Brittany sees a mirror reflection of herself. How she’s more caring for her family and herself than others.
Going through the pain and suffering that she and her sisters went through with Ms. Grudge, she becomes more tough-minded and very eager and competitive along with her animalistic attacking roots kicking in when she or her sisters are being belittled or mistreated. She sees originally sees Alvin as someone with his head in the clouds, someone who’s an over the top clown who doesn’t take life seriously, but as she discovers his past and what he himself went through, she then feels bad for him and his inner struggle, and learns to respect him when she sees how much he’s tried to make her and everyone else and himself feel better. And how he never gives up in that he always thinks of a new way. How he thinks about her. Trying to do whatever he can to make her smile.
And Alvin sees that Brittany is just lost in her identity and how she’s competitive for the sake of wanting to feel like the bigger animal instead of the small critter. And how she uses that sassy animalistic attitude to fight them off. And someone who has also been through a lot as well. Alvin has known for years that Brittany’s a good person, because he knows that she’s lacking someone to help her. He’s been in her shoes and wants her to realize her issues sooner and embrace life sooner than he did when his mother died. He’s like the kind of old man where he’ll watch the inexperienced one Gail when they refuse to listen to him, laugh, and then show them how it’s done. But with Brittany, he takes it more personally. So, the more time they spend on the island, the more they learn to become friends, respect each other, and potentially, a cute little couple with playful banter. See, we keep that sarcastic banter, but we see that they’ve grown as characters, and Alvin’s arc would already had been complete, going from a naïve youngster, to a cheeky but sad clown, and throughout Squeakquel and Chipwrecked, becomes a more humble and mature person. But still horses around once and a while. Satisfies any fan, but also non fans too.
And even the whole concept of the franchise could be something where, animals have a secret human intellect which explains how the chipmunks can sing, but they try to keep that part of them a low profile to avoid being hunted and sold for ransom. And it could be about the chipmunks putting themselves out there to not just become more than who they are in nature, but also help those around them by showing the people that their animal kind deserves the amount of praise that they’ve been getting and especially not using them because of their speaking ability. Kind of like Toy Story (1995) where the Toys come to life when no one’s around. And also like Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) where humans later in the series now have animals interact in human society without having to be nervous about being hunted or destroyed.
I mean, it might sound a little ridiculous, and a bit confusing as I’m just throwing ideas from my head, but I just have my own little concept that doesn’t create dumb fan fiction like Alvin going into the military, or any R rated love stories or anything like that weird Alvin and Simon relationship nightmare fuel. I’m wanting to write something that’s reminiscent of old Don Bluth films from the 80s like The Secret of NIMH (1982) or An American Tail (1986). You know, something that’s for children, and adults alike. And keep in mind that I’m only fifteen. I’ve always related with Alvin because I always saw him as like, the funny old man, while Simon was more of the Studious and responsible old man. I’ve struggled with ADD just like Alvin. I’ve had people who were irritated with me for being silly and fun just like Alvin. And I even had a crush on a girl who was absolutely 100% like Brittany just like Alvin. And I always saw Alvin as the kind of person who has self esteem problems because of how he sees the people around him react to him. But he still puts a smile on his face to keep the others from worrying about him. And tries everything he can to make it right. I mean yeah he’s stubborn and very sarcastic, but it’s like how an old person is sarcastic and stubborn.
Now, if any of you have any more ideas about my concept or even a concept for a chipmunks movie of your own, please let me know! I would LOVE to hear about it. And let me know what you think of the idea.
Great analysis, and keep up the great work and video edits you create! Share this with Granditamias if you can!

here after listening to dozens of hours of 16 speed, finally wanting to learn the actual lore as someone who's never seen any Chipmunk content besides the less than good 2000's remakes
edit: jesus that got darker in the end than I expected it would. I guess R34 really is that all encompassing lol. You should do a video on the 16 speed renditions of the Chipmunks' music. There's a lot of great stuff out there. It's basically just a group of people who slow down the songs closer to their original speed and because the singers had to really enunciate the lyrics the result is this grimy sort of post punk sound that's genuinely really enjoyable for the most part. Guaranteed that in the comment section for every single 16 speed video there's at least one comment spouting a fake story about 'GG Alvin' lol, its pretty funny

Thanks for the shoutout. This was a very thorough documentary. However, I’m not sure if Rocking Through the Decades came out in January of 1991, I had always heard September of 1990 (but don’t quote me on that), and it didn’t have Micheal Jackson. Though it did have Will Smith. I was certainly shocked by the fan art you showed, even though it was censored. Even though no one can truly get rid of that stuff, I wish it would stay out of the main areas of the fandom where we actually like to discuss what actually makes Alvin and The Chipmunks great. I didn’t join the fandom until 2017 but I never encountered that stuff then and I don’t know what the fandom was like in its early days, though I hope to see it prosper someday and not be toxic. Anyway, great video.

I think the Rockin' Through the Decades (or as it's now called Rockin' With the Chipmunks) did have Michael Jackson in it as well as Will Smith. Will Smith was the host yes. But Michael Jackson did appear but it was just with song segments where it looked like Alvin was supposed to be dancing with him in a couple of his music videos. Probably should've mentioned that in the video but oh well. And yes, I do believe the the pornography of the chipmunks should be killed off but sadly we can't really do anything about it. And I only put the censored content in there, is mainly to show with what I was talking about so it would fit. I did the same process for everything else as well so every footage that I show in the video would correspond with what I was talking about. I also did that so it would look professionally done. But thanks for the criticism though. I really do appreciate it none the less.

    • @birdy369
      @birdy369 Před rokem

Michael Jackson was featured in rocking through the decades, though it wasn't in an active role like the hosting gig will Smith had with it. The only Michael that appeared in it was only clips of his music videos, Beat it & Smooth Criminal. They used clips from the already existing music videos, and animated Alvin to look as if he was dancing alongside MJ. (A pretty clever/funny gag was in the Beat it video - when Alvin was animated in, as if he was struggling to keep up with the dance steps and choreo. Michael and his dancers have a kick in the choreo, so they animated Alvin in getting his rear kicked by accident. Smooth criminal has a similar gag, again Alvin struggling to keep up with the dance steps - and when Michael does that gravity defying lean forward, Alvin tries and smacks right to the floor. I must say, that was my favorite VHS as a kid and it definitely ignited my lifelong Michael jackson admiration.)
There were other celebrities who had cameo parts, where they acted as if they were auditioning to host, vying for will smith's job. I can remember little Richard.... the woman from the shining, her name I can't recall at the moment.... there was a country music star as well but I can't remember. I still have the vhs though!

Oh, OK I see from this video it was a TV special? Makes much more sense for that 20 min run. And with the way it's hosted by will Smith. You'll see what I mean here:

Having just re watched this, I noticed I didn't comment last time LOL I just have to say that it's a really thought out documentary!
Personally though, I think the adult artwork portraying the characters, isn't necessarily exclusive to this franchise, pretty much every single property is subjected to this in some way, you can somewhat get away with it with the chipmunks because of the ambiguity regarding their age, but it gets considerably worse the more research you do, for instance you can unfortunately find an entire cult of artwork on characters such as Lisa Simpson who is 8 years old. And it's frankly just weird. Someone once said to me that people who draw this artwork are better off doing it, then hurting real children.

This video was really good! I was introduced to the chipmunks from the 2007 movie then started renting dvds with 80s chipmunks episodes from blockbuster shortly after. After watching the cartoon episodes I was obsessed. I didn't really get involved with the fandom though until maybe my preteens or teens, especially by 2015. Unfortunately, that was around the time I decided I needed to leave. Some of the fan art was very suggestive, it creeped me out. There were some creepy fanfictions. People were obsessed with Alvon. It was all over deviantart in the fandom. My fifteen year old brain was trying to figure out why those things were so off putting when I had seen the same crap in anime fandoms and realized, 'wait these characters are children :(:('. I came to the conclusion that the fandom was a community of creeps and wanting nothing to do with it. Years later, I'm back into rewatching episodes and stumbled across this vid. Just overall, thanks for making this video and addressing some of the main issues the fandom had. Its such a shame that it drove many people away. They’re both geniuses, just in different ways and with different topics they both love. They’re also like two old souls with different views on the world. Simon is basically a mix of Fraiser Crane and Dean Martin, whereas Alvin is like a mix between Chandler Bing, Jerry Lewis. It’s like a handsome wise Boy Scout (Simon) mixed with a handsome wise artistic clown (Alvin) That’s how I would put it. Two wise old people with polar opposite views and interests. Alvin’s a pretty smart and intelligent guy, it’s just in a different way. Simon is a mathematical and biological genius, whereas Alvin is an ARTISTIC, smart and creative genius. But are kind and considerate all around.

Anything should be left alone. Everything that is brought back from the past is always molded into what whom ever brings them back to be. New ideas should be the only things made.

Something about Alvin and the Chipmunks has always bothered me. Ross bagdasarian makes me uncomfortable for some reason, the chipettes have always been weirdly sexualized, the live action movies were terrible and uncanny, the most recent cartoon feels soulless and their designs have gradually become more and more human with every iteration.
The way they make me feel is the antithesis of the Teenage mutant ninja turtles. I would gladly invite the turtles into my home, whereas If I came across the chipmunks I would lock my doors and board my windows immediately and hope it wasn't already too late.

I agree with some points of your comment but idk how Ross would make you feel uncomfortable when you don't even know the man. As for the live-action movies, while yes the plots weren't always great, the character designs at least were (especially from 2007 'cause damn for a 2007 film, the animation and character dersigns were the only thing good about the films). As for the 80's-90's series, I do believe each episode had a good story put into it. However, I do agree that they looked way too human and the Chipettes being sexualized is definitely weird to me indeed. And even in the current series from 2015 to now, it just isn't really as good as it once was so far as story-telling and character design. Idk why they have chipmunks looking like humans because tbh, it looks awful to me. Like, if they're going to look like chipmunks, they need to look like chipmunks. Not these weird humanoid creatures that look like a spawn from hell.
