The singing in the 2nd song that the singer was trying to force was not matching the music at all, and the music was not supporting what he was trying to do. I was not feeling that at all. The first song was okay but I still kind of felt the same way, at least it was all more cohesive though. overall, first song = okay, 2nd song =not very good.

@@pizzapartyweekend8465 It's all done by Darren Korb and guests, and he works for the company that made Hades(Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, etc). Darren Korb also voices Zagreus in the game :D Literally all of the Supergiant Games OSTs are amazing.
Nolly and Misha are just a diabolical force of production and engineering. Misha really stepped up to bat on P4 and it sounds like he just got even better.
Nolly's drum tones for this album so far sounds like they could be on par with PIII. That snare is beautiful

Was Nolly still involved with this album then? It very much sounds like it to me, has his very distinctive bass tones all over the new tracks. I assume he played the bass parts also as on P4. I'm assuming his arrangement with the band is basically no touring, no live gigs, no band interviews, I'll record the bass lines and I'll help produce the albums, that's about it?
@@Jamie_Wilson Matt and Mark talked about his involvement during P4's documentary. His bass tone is so unique and is incredibly difficult to replace, not to mention his engineering and production for the drums. Yes, he's no longer "in" the band, but he's still involved with the group.

The bois in Periphery just don't miss for me. Since their release of Juggernaut a decade ago, every album just gets better. Spencer is easily one of the MOST versatile vocalists around. Many amazing vocalists in metal today but henis very unique. Can't wait for another perfect album.

After hearing new Periphery was coming, my next thought was "I can't wait to see Geebz check this one out"
I found Spencer's vocals on Zagreus very reminiscent of his work on his other band King mothership! Their album the ritual is an amazing experience, makes you feel like you're watching a musical.

@@nilknoc101 its a very cool listen if you do the whole album start to finish, Spencer is on vocals, guitar, and keyboard, Matt is actually in it too on drums, and then they have Tai Wright from Slaves on bass. Wild take but its like a darker Queen, very theatrical with different characters.

Yup. The production quality really elevates these tracks. Like when those final djenty riffs hit at the end of Zagreus. So freakin huge. Like the gates to hell opening up.
@@alexk3352 Or that filter over Spencer's voice in Zagreus around 4:43 in the song (not this video). So many small touches, and all the instruments have so much space in the mix to breathe. It's really great.
@@spartansquid5931 that's one of the most impressive things about nolly's production. 4 string instruments, highly insane levels of amp gain and overdrive, and you still can hear ghost notes.
I love seeing Geebz just goober out at the guitarists like I do. He has been in music all his life and looks like me when I hear this stuff.
In my own opinion... Every Periphery song is a masterclass in songwriting, musicianship and production. They could never put out a bad song in my eyes/ears.
The range of emotions on your face from the start of the song right up to the first break is amazing. XD
The solo in Zagreus was Jake Bowen by the way. Since there's 3 guitarists they always switch off with solos. which in itself is too cool!
Interesting Easter egg in Zagreus is that at two different places throughout the song they use riffs from the song Four Lights from Juggernaut
the saxophonist is jorgen mukeby. singer, guitarist and saxophonist from Shining(nor) . ;) if you wanna check them out: "the one inside", "I won't forget" and "fisheye" are some of their songs

One thing I love about these new tracks is that I get vibes from literally every one of their albums at one point or another. As someone who's been a fan for over a decade, I love that kind of fan service. My first listen of these was reminiscent of my first listen of Colors II from BTBAM. I'm so incredibly stoked for the rest of this album đ€â€ïž
I agree and I love these kinds of things! Colors II is amazing and one of my all-time favorite albums now, and I fully expect the new Periphery album to be on the same list when itâs out.

Them adding the jazzy breakdown on this song was the absolute highlight for me. The, "wow, they are truly thinking out of the box on this album" moment.

Whats funny about the last track is Zagreus is a character from Hades. I remember you saying that you reacted to hades ost. They even put in a little reference towards the end.

it's at 27:36 in this video, if you look up 'god of the dead' from the hades ost, it is at the 7 second mark. It's everywhere in the ost since it's the leitmotif of Hades himself in the game.

There is so much difference between the fake, "Oh, I love this!" garbage some reactors rubber stamp on everything they hear and your honest to goodness, kid in a candy store excitement when you break down something you really like. And also congrats on Misha and Jake giving you a shout. I am honestly sincerely happy for you...

This band is so unique. Somehow, despite hitting us with the most rich, complex constructions of music you could ask for, there is something accessible about it, like you said. There has to be, if this is the band that made me a metalhead a few years ago. Even though they are metal as metal can be, there are the orchestral aspects within some sections or totally on their own, and there are pop elements too. I think the pop sound is actually something that turns people away from Periphery, because there are plenty of people who actually don't like Spencer's voice. I feel sorry for them, because I personally feel like I've been given a privilege to be able to enjoy this stuff.
Wildfire is just awesome. You can see a lot of people are thrown off by the first chorus, because it feels so different from the rest of the song, but by the end they've turned it around and it just feels RIGHT. And Zagreus does have a kind of old school djenty feel to it early on, then it turns into something totally different and shows the band's depth. Both songs feel like a fusion of everything Periphery has done before, and includes a lot of references to their Juggernaut double album. Just amazing all around.
Wildfire is a play on their song "The Event" from their concept double album.
Interested to see how this all fits together because we never really got answers on what the concept album was about.

The guys pull from so many influences between these two tracks alone! "Hat-nods" everywhere across multiple decades! Pure class and genius!!
This is why they are one of my top 3 bands. Can't wait for new album and tour. Missed seeing them live!

I believe the metallic sound you're talking about in the guitars is a form of palm muting where you put more force on the right hand pushing the strings down and place it a bit higher up than normal palm muting. It gives a distinct metallic harmonic sound. try it, it's great fun and super heavy!

Geebz, that metallic sound in the guitar tone is DJENT.
Grab yourself a 5150, nice amount of gain, palm mute the strings except about a half inch higher (away from the bridge) than normal, and then chug those strings so hard you think you might break them.
Voila!

good tips! some other nerdy gear tips: lower output pickups generally have more clarity than super high output pickups, this can be ideal for high-gain djent tones, making the pick attack more present.
lower gauge strings!!! Meshuggah use essentially a 9-42,44 set tuned half step down to Eb. You'll find lower gauge strings, provided you don't pick them too hard will have more of that metallic sound with palm muting.
Overdrive set as boost!! this is essential IMO, take an overdrive pedal and set level 9-10, drive 1-2, tone 5-6. In my eyes, that palm muting metallic chunk sound is mostly due to the overdrive hitting a high gain amp as a boost. the other half mostly being how you hit the strings as @guitarkid says!

@@t3hgir I'm not sure about the pickups thing. Misha's signature pickups are crazy high output ceramic pickups. I mainly think it's important that they're tight and dynamic, so not actives.

I liked the song even more with the participation of Munkeby, the saxophonist. He is the leader of Shining (nor). Another amazing band with a unique sound that mixes metal with jazz in some songs and in others with electronic sounds. No doubt they were avant-garde.

Periphery's evolution and works are one of the best examples of the good that happens when artists have complete freedom over the art they make. I've probably listened to all of the other albums at least 100x apiece at this point and from the sound of these first two tracks this album won't be any different. Iâm sure it has already been mentioned to you but periphery is completely independent down to the audio engineering (nolly aka the bassist). These guys are truly something special and Iâm stoked to see them reaching so many new ears.
The chorus for wildfire is a nod to the song "the event" from the juggernaut album, it's actually a directy copy of the riff with added flavor.

The "boing" you're referring to is called DJENT. It started off just being a guitar tone but it turned into a genre. Oh wait just kidding, its not a genre.

It's been quite a while since chord progression, by itself, impressed me. Both of these songs accomplished that, not to mention everything else about them.
Man if those interludes at the end of Wildfire and Zagreus are themes that get expanded upon like on the last track of the album, like what they did on Lune, I'm going to cry so fucking hard

hey geebz! i know you noticed the chorus of wildfire is really interesting, and I think the reason for that is those weird chords are Gb, Db, Eb, and A, when the chorus is in C minor. I don't know the exact qualities, but those are the root notes. hope this gives some more insight to how cool these boys are!
Its not Gb, Db in the beginning, it's actually G to C. The qualities are pretty interesting:

That metallic sound on the guitar tone is actually them "djenting," which is funny you mentioned since the album is called P5: Djent is Not a Genre.
The term 'djent,' meaning a palm-muted strumming technique where they hit at least four strings and their right palm-muting hand is up the neck a bit, causing a tighter, more percussive picking sound. It's an onomatopoeia. It sounds like "djent"

Jazz influences into Metal are becoming more and more prominent and I'm fucking here for it. Thank You, Scientist is a band that has taken me back to the first time I've ever heard Fungus Amongus by Incubus and all the funky jazz inspos I've enjoyed over the year.

They have many great songs but Iâd recommend to start with Dreams, A Method, DLZ or Wash the Day. Stay golden Geebz!
Thereâs ton of references to their Juggernaut projects Alpha and Omega in both songs. Also Wildfire has an orchestral outro thatâs shorter than Zagreus but I highly recommend going back to hear it on the official audio

That's just your classic Djent tone! The word djent gets thrown around a lot these days to describe a genre, but no, djent is specifically that metallic sound/tone.

I love Periphery. And this might sound weird but I don't fall in love with the music immediately . Honestly I think my brain is trying to keep up with what I'm hearing. I have to listen 2-3 times before I can appreciate all the aspects, guitar, drums, bass, and the ambient backgrounds all coming together. Part of the reason I love this channel because you break it down for us. Given what these 2 tracks have shown us as fans we are in for a great album that will stand the test of time. Keep up the great work

I listened Wildfire for the first time in this video (I missed the release for some reason) and it's truely wild! You mentioned this metalic sound in their guitar tone but it's actually the bass. They put bass into 2 channels. One is a clear bass with high pass and the second one is distorted bass with low pass. I tried it too and it sounds amazing!

you have to take a listen to some Intervals particularly the song epiphany lots of great jazz and fusion elements sprinkled in with metal
Agreed! Epiphany is a great introduction to Intervals especially because it combines jazz as you mentioned with that "djenty" feel with great melody. Geebz should check em out!
