Belgian historian of food, Pierre Leqluercq noted that the first recorded mention of French fries is in a Parisian book in 1775. He traced the history of French fries and found the first recipe of what is a modern day French fry in a French cookbook from 1795, La cuisinière républicaine.
It was these Parisian fries that inspired Frederic Krieger, a musician from Bavaria who learned how to make these fries in Paris, to take the recipe to Belgium. Once there, he opened his own business and began to sell fries under the name ‘la pomme de terre frite à l’instar de Paris’ which translated to ‘Paris-style fried potatoes.’

Spanish explorers are actually responsible for bringing potatoes to Europe in the first place.
A Spanish explorer described potatoes in a journal entry dating back to 1577 as "a kind of earth nut which, after it is boiled, is as tender as cooked chestnuts." It was pretty typical at the time in Spanish tradition to fry basically anything, so fries definitely could have been on the menu back in the 16th century.
Apparently, fries were first served in Galicia (an autonomous area of northwest Spain), and eventually made their way up to Belgium. Belgium, at the time, was called the Spanish Netherlands. So fries became popular in Belgium because the tradition moved through Spanish communities.

In Belgium we have a “friterie” culture. In every town you can find several “friteries”: kiosks where you can buy fries and meats. We’re the only country that has these. It’s even officially recognized as intangible heritage. There’s a specific recipe you need to follow to get the real Belgian fries. So, I’m sorry America, you have to taste the real deal in Belgium, WITH the real mayonaise, which is also totally different in the US.

well as a Belgian it hurts to say that French fries indeed are Parisian BUT we perfected the art of baking fries. It all depends how you make the fries . The French bake them usually once , while Belgium fries are always baked twice to make it crispy. So , you could call them French or Belgian fries based on how many times they are fried.

fries were invented in france. at the end of the 18th century in paris more precisely, close to the seine. women were selling donuts at the pont-neuf, these women gets the ideo of frying round shaped potato near theater, theater is long so many people after the theater is finished come to eat these round shaped fried potato. these are called "les pommes du pont neuf" (or ninth bridge potatoes) but, round shaped potato are not good for frying, durring the process they can stick to each other, so they decide to cut them in sticks. and in the middle of the 19th century they appear inthe cooking book named "La Cuisinière républicaine" which is a potato cooking book. many people thinks that its from belgium because theres a story were people from namur (central belgium) fried fishes, but when winter came, they couldnt fry fishes because the river was frozen, so they fried potatoes. ut the french version hs a proof, the cooking book which is on wikipedia , you can search it. but the belgian were the one who made the fries famous, a german guy named JEAN-FREDERICK KRIEGER (his name was probbaly translated in french, the real one is probably johan friederick kriger in 1944 decide to open a friterie (fries shop) in belgium , the shop is named "fritz" he learnt how to cook the fries in a rotisserie in montmartre in paris. krieger gets so famous that the fries become a classic of belgian gastronomy, today theres around 5000 friterie in belgium, fries are so associated with belgium that the international day of the fries are celebrated in belgium. so no, the fries ae french. (belgium fries are a lil different they are fried differently 2 times and with BINTJE potato)
