- I've been having some problems greasing my Chinese mini excavator, which is also called "buttering" in the industry. The manually operated grease gun that came with the machine was terrible, so I bought an INGCO battery-powered gun. I also bought some other accessories from Lock-n-Lube.
I think I need to replace the included Zerk fittings on the machine with longer ones. That way, they'll work with the plastic dust caps I want to use and with the Lock-n-Lube attachment.
I tried using some metric Zerk fittings, but they had coarse threads that weren't compatible with the TPI on the pins. I did manage to use a SAE Zerk fitting with a -27 thread. I was able to pump grease with no problems, and the Lock-n-Lube attachment worked great.
I'm taking a break to cool down and think about what to do next. I need to get some more 27 TPI Zerk fittings with longer nipples.
* You can thank Oscar Zerk and his 1923 patent for this special fitting. The process for maintaining such lubrication has advanced somewhat, but it was Zerk that created a design that made truly meaningful improvement. Early cars were lubricated like machines, by manually slathering grease where it was needed. source: www.hagerty.com
