    Retired USAF. Used this on F-15 wheel bearings and various components.
    It stays, does not breakdown, and it's "tackiness" pulls back into assemblies, especially in wheel bearings.
    Additionally, "cold soaking" aircraft at altitude resulting in -50F to -60F temps and having superior performance from the lubricant, is a must.
    When you spin bearings from 0 to near 200 mph with weight from 45,000-52,000 lbs, you don't mind spending twice as much for superior grease.
    Same for vehicles.

    • @junkmonkey9859
      @junkmonkey9859 Před 11 měsíci +19

      @@JohnSmith-ps7wp Red N Tacky? grease. It has a component that causes it to be "pulled" into the areas in contact with each other that interact, instead of being forced out, slung off or otherwise wiped away from the areas needing lubricant.
      Additionally, it "self churns" or constantly reintegrates, so that the grease works longer, replenishing from the grease that is in the components.
      Other grease can become "isolated" to a small amount that stays on the part and the greater amount of grease is not utilized, but just sits there "separated" from the components.
      Hope that helps

    Awesome video, I always enjoy your comparisons, you really do a great job with methodology and remaining as unbiased as possible. I work at a truck shop, and due to the recent shortages of grease we've had to get by with what whatever we can get. Simply due to availability we recently got in a few cases of Castrol Pyroplex Blue #2, which advertises improved water barrier performance and reduced breakdown of performance with water contamination, even that it thickens up when water is introduced. I have noticed that cleaning this grease off the floor is much more difficult with water based cleaners than other greases, and that it is pretty tacky and doesn't slide off of wet parts. I would love to see some testing of this grease, maybe in a future grease shootout. It could be a fantastic option for parts or applications that for whatever reason aren't perfectly shielded from the environment, provided it can meet it's claims in testing

Ford, for example, specifies a PTFE grease for driveshaft splines and the stuff used in your household washing machine bearings is made to be very resistant to water infiltration. Grease is by no means, just "grease". If you doubt that, try lubricating your wheel bearings with the pan drippings from your morning bacon and eggs.

    I'm going to start sending you invoices for my time, since I spend more of it watching you than doing the work I'm supposed to be doing! I was actually surprised by the significance of the differences between these greases. Your test for tackiness was especially interesting and it makes me wonder how each of them would handle centrifugal force. In many automotive applications centrifugal force would want to send the grease outward in a packed bearing, eventually depriving the inner race of grease if it all has a place to go. The compatibility of grease is no joke, and I'm glad you did mention it. In future grease tests I'd be curious how different grease types hold up in similar tests (say, lithium and silicone and Moly based, etc.) Also, there are instances in automotive repair where grease is intentionally mixed with oil, such as replacing an outer wheel bearing in an axle. The bearing is packed with grease, but the expectation is that the gear oil will make it's way down the axle tube and eventually mix in with the grease and wash it out. I've always been curious if one type of grease or another is best used in this situation. Similarly, transmission and engine assembly often demands a temporary grease be used before trans fluid or engine oil gets through the lubrication passages. It would be interesting to see how a mix of grease and oil fared in some of these tests.

    • @bertgrau9246
      @bertgrau9246 Před 4 lety +1

      The special grease used in engine building is by design, intended to mix with oil. It won't hurt the oil, or the metal parts it's in contact with .
      I've built, and helped build a lot of engines and I used 105, engine grease. It works great. One gentleman put an engine together by himself then called me and said the engine wouldn't build oil pressure.
      We pulled the engine, he didn't tighten the oil pick up tube and the oil pump was only pulling air. We checked the crank shaft and bearings and they were fine. We did recoat them put the engine back in and presto we had 50 lbs of oil pressure.

    • @enduringcharm
      @enduringcharm Před 4 lety +1

      @@bertgrau9246 Yes, there are special assembly lube for engines, such as Permatex Ultra Slick or the 105 you mention. Back in the day when I was rebuilding transmissions there were uses for grease too, including holding checkballs in place for assembly in valve bodies, or lubricating thrust washers, or bearings, etc. In axles with bearings that will start up dry I've only ever seen manufacturers recommend a high temp grease, without being specific. Some bearings also come with grease installed, even though the bearing might be for multiple applications. Another area where oil and grease can mix is on splined input or output shafts which initially need grease but eventually will have oil mixed in.

      Moly vs. Lithium grease is a great idea! I tend to use the Traveler Extreme HD 3% moly grease from Tractor Supply on my equipment, as it's very reasonably priced for a 3% moly grease, but I'd love to know how it stacks up against something like the Lucas Red N Tacky, or other "premium" lithium grease.

    I'm just glad this justified my continued purchasing of red n tacky

    I was from the "it's just grease" school and changed up only when a sale or a believable ad caused the switch. Great video. Is there test of chemically enhanced varieties in the future? Such as graphite laden vs Teflon infused? Brand choices are too numerous, though. How about the best bang for the buck general purpose? So far, Super Tech is not a favorite any longer despite cost and availability. Great video.
    Thank you for sharing! Your work certainly benefits us cash-poor retirees who have to decide between meds or food for the week.
    Great

      quit taking the meds. Your a victim of big pharma. You most likely need nothing your taking. So there you go, food wins this one easily

      This is the best Grease that I have ever seen or used. Silver hook is the brand and it's a CERAMIC GREASE which apparently works up to 1500C - I'm in Australia and have to buy it out of U.K. at approx $42 AUD for 500g tub inc. shipping, but it's bloody amazing! Makes loose bearings tighter and even repairs worn bearings! www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tub-Ceramic-Grease-And-Brake-Shoes-Pad-Protector-Vht-Protection/360710711120?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

    Great content. This is a channel I love at 27 and I'm sure my grandfather would love. All around great content with so much actual usable information. You're the man!
