🙌👏🎸🎶💙‼️Great reaction💯. As great as this version is, it doesn't even make my top 3 versions of this song. He is always playing in the moment so each song can be so different. My 3 favorites for this one is from Toyko 1985, a longer version where he just seems to be channeling Jimi, Austin City Limits 1989, the most polished, and the El Macombo which is a venue that usually gets blocked. 😔. Yes you are right his band supports him, keeps him in the pocket, by watching him like a hawk and being responsive to subtle clues. Chris Layton on drums, Tommy Shannon on bass, and just one month before this show they were joined by Reese Wynans pianist who is like Stevie but on the piano.
A huge fan favorite also from this same venue is Life Without You, an original composed by Stevie after the sudden passing of his good Friend, Charley Wirz, a Dallas guitar shop owner. There are lots of surprises to enjoy in that one💯 Subbing for more Stevie Ray🎸🎶💙💯‼️

I read somewhere most guitar players couldn't get a tune out of his guitar setup due to the gauge of the strings and the hight action. 1st time I ever heard SRV I was in Texas from the UK on a work trip around 2001, I was in a bar and Texas flood came on. Loved his stuff ever since.
Makes sense. A lot of people have been commenting that he used 12 gauge strings which is wild! Hands of steel! Such a killer player! Thanks for swinging by the channel!
I saw him in 1981, two years before anyone outside of Texas knew who he was. Astonishing tone. He played with zero effects except for a wah that got plugged in only for tunes requiring it. Otherwise, he went straight into two Vibroverbs and a 212 Marshall combo.

I was reading a post which had a pic of him on it and a reporter asked him if he played with a lot of finesse and he said No ! When I play I play like I'm breaking out of jail 😅 The Typical SRV at his best .

I saw him in the 80s and double trouble and he was incredible I think he was one of the best that's why he is in the rock and roll hall of fame I put him at the same level with jimmy Hendricks BB King said he is better than jimmy I can't believe it has been 34 years since he died he was incredible

The goats of all goats! I agree with some of the other comments, not even in the top three of his versions of this song. Definitely check out Austin 1989, el macombo and Tokyo. Also there is a version of this he plays in Nashville where he plays this behind the back at least half of the song and then breaks a string and keeps going…crazy

The last 4 years he used 11 gage strings thats what I use. ❤❤
Stevie was always amazing but when he got clean he went to the next level, he was so much cleaner sounding all around.
I didn’t realize there was that much of a difference in his playing!
I've never seen this version before. Honestly, he looked a little messed up and he missed several notes in the beginning. Yeah, yeah he improvises, I know. But what I heard wasn't that. Be that as it may - still phenomenal performance. That's why I'd like to suggest Life Without You from this same show. He def has his mojo going in that one. And as thick as his strings are, he routinely breaks them mid-song. Does he stop the show? Does he keep playing with the string just flopping in the air? Does the band just keep playing as he swaps guitars with his tech? Keep watching and just bask in his silky smoothness.

What really blows my mind (if it is true) is that not only did he bend the sh!t out of those strings, he did it on REALLY heavy gauge strings with really high action. I would not have wanted to arm wrestle that man.

Stevie used 17 gauge strings at times !!!
But what people don't understand is that he not only used a custom set of strings, he tuned down half a step which made the strings floppy. He used the higher gauge strings for Low e, A and D. G, B and E were medium gauge. The reason he did it was because it took some of the slop out of the strings from tuning down.
Stevie Ray was 'the man' .. the GOAT .. always performing in 'beast mode gear' as if it was to be his last show ever!

Just from his appearance, Stevie looks like he was using still here @ Capital Theater. However, he would soon make the decision to live clean and sober after collapsing on stage and being a stones throw away from death in 1986. He entered rehab, renewed his relationship w/Jesus and His Father, God and began the battle fighting his way out of a 'life long' severe drinking {he stated that he began drinking at the age of 6!} and coke addiction. SRV was 3 1/2 yrs sober and had been helping other addicts out of addiction for those years before his untimely passing in 1990.
RIP Stevie Ray .. RIP.🌹

He used 13 gage strings nobody else could use 13 gage. They tear your fingers up. Stevie Ray had 1inch holes in his fingers. He would carry a kit on the road that was a file a tube of super glue and a tube of bakin' powder. And do his own skin graphs. ❤

One thing I notice between Stevie's playing pre and post kicking the drugs is his connection with the audience and the members on stage. He was more connected with them.D oes it make his guitar work better? Don't know and would not even think of making that judgment. It's just different in ways.
When Stevie got sober he seemed much more serious on stage, like he thought he’d been wasting time. His playing was brilliant, but to me it didn’t have the same fluidity. His notes came in furious bursts instead of waves. Maybe he knew he didn’t have much time left, I don’t know. He used to sort of go into a trance and connect to his source of music, and he was in his own world of pure music. He trusted the band to keep it together and so he let the music go where it wanted, with him being the conduit. Look at “Little Wing” from El Mocambo for a good example. It was all about a mystical connection to the music for him. He wasn’t going to change it naturally going where it went for anything. When he was sober he was very much present, but those otherworldly moments weren’t. Then again, he wasn’t a superstar before. He was just on the verge of becoming one when he got on that helicopter. It’s tough changing your life, and he probably would’ve eventually relaxed and started enjoying himself more, but he didn’t get the chance.
Stevie Ray never read music. His performances were all improvised. And he played 13 guage strings, the most difficult to play. Most guitarists play 8 - 9 gauge. ... Please take a look at another 2 Voodoo Chile's.... Both opposites... For the real passion in the guy, take a look at ' Voodoo Chile ' live at ' El Mocambo ' , the same Clunb as his Texas Flood performance.. Then take a look at ' Voodoo Chile ' live at Austin Texas, for a completely controlled, polished performance... The contrasts are stark! ... This is a good performance, but a little all over the place.... You will love both performances better than this one I'm sure! ... Have a great day! ... And may I suggest a 9 instrument introduction with ' I'm a man ' by Chicago, Album version... Notice the simple tambourine in the middle section holding everything together! ... And how about The Rolling Stones, ' Sympathy for the Devil ' . As you scroll, it is the Brick Wall with Graffiti on it! ...

You are very welcome!... I am 68 years old from England... I grew up in the 60's - 70's in the ' Golden Era ' for music... I have only just discovered your Studio today! ... Another suggestion is the Righteous Brother's ' Unchained Melody, but only one of the guy's sings. There is an introduction by Andy Williams, they appeared on his show. This is what they called ' Blue eyed Soul ', this is a stunning performance if you admire ' Crooners ' ! ... And, I'm sure you know Led Zeppelin. Their 5th Album is called ' Houses of the Holy ' . This really showcases their wide range of musical expertise and maturity, their talent. But their is one song that slips under the Radar. It is such a shame, and it is their first ballad. It is called ' The Rain Song ' about Love through all the seasons. Typically with Led Zeppelin, they lull you into a sense of serenity, then BANG!. They hit you with power! ... Stairway to Heaven being one example of course!... Then of course, there is the famous Crooner, Tom Jones who I met once at a party before he went Stateside - lovely guy - but check out ' Treat her right ' on his own show, watch him let rip! . And why the ladies young and old, still love him today... It's his own show, the band behind him, he is on a coloured chequered floor, with seated ladies to his left and right... And, a great show that we had here, ' The Old Grey Whistle test ' . Check out Rory Gallagher ' Walking on hot coals ' He influenced many famous guitarists, the lyrics are great, and the whole band rocks! And he never ' sold out ' by going commercial. True to his roots and had so much time for his fans, even teenagers at the Stage Door after performing! ... Catch you later Sir! ... I shall be watching your show with avid interest, I have just subscribed! ... Neil.
Go back and watch your video again. At the 9:55 timeline, the knob on his Whammy Bar comes off and falls on the floor. He bends down, picks it up and screws it back on while continuing to play. I am not trying to be mean, but if you watch Stevie Ray play live, you can't take your eyes off of him or you will miss something. I normally don't do this, but, you should watch "Life Without You" at the Capital Theater 9/21/1985. At 1:35 into the song he changes from a red Fender Stratocaster guitar to a white custom Stratocaster guitar. About 90% of the people watching this video never see this. No one ever notices any change in the song. Another great one is "Look At Little Sister" live at Austin,Texas 1989. During the second half of the "Middle Eight" he breaks his "High E" string. Watch the video to find out what he does next. It is amazing. Love your videos, keep up the good work. P.S. he played with 13 gauge strings.
