Did anyone see that coming? The chancellor is the new PM, detailed in this extended (but sadly not entirely complete) news bulletin from November 1990.
Great delivery, reminiscent of the later One O’Clock News from 1993 with just one topic, from the same year, Burke introduced three topics before main titles.
At 10:50 this was a rare shot used by BBC News. The newsroom based studio N3 here did not have room for large monitors for interviews, this keyed in screen shot has a camera in the main newsroom shooting through the gap in the set towards the back of N3 to get this shot.
We owe him a huge debt of gratitude. Dragging us into Maastricht was the start of the end of our EU membership. It was this that made it an issue and started to reveal the fanatical EUphilia of the Tory grandees.
how decidedly ironic that Teresa Gorman supported Major and yet within 3 years she was trying to bring him down over europe - such a shame what happened to Major as he was a decent man who was not alowed to govern effectively due to backbench revolts - his legacy will be far kinder to him that Blair or Brown's will be and im a traditional labour voter
Love the dramatic opening of the nine o clock 🕒 news. Use to blare it out loud 🔊 on the hifi.

That Twin Peaks ad! 😅
Heseltine proud to have fought without wanker. Unfortunately this was not the end of the wanker in the Conservative Party.
Ground control to Major John
oh dear then we had nc cp
A Prime Minister to be remembered... Yep for the brutal infighting in the Conservative Party and the brutal 1997 Election!
At least he won a majority at the 1992 General Election, unlike Theresa May in 2017!

Twin Peaks is fantastic
Major was much better than Boris these were the good old days.
