Build a kit guitar and you will learn S type guitars all have essentially the same design with minor variations. All of which can be upgraded to suit taste. There is no secret sauce. Fenders, Squires, Sires, Donners, Harley Benton, Ibanez, PRS SE, Yamaha, Aria Pro II, Cort, Schecter, Kemper, all can be excellent if properly set up and frets filed, crowned, and polished. If brand name matters to you then buy the brand name, if it doesn’t then figure out what neck shape and pickup sounds you like and buy that. I fall into the non-brand name camp and have several S Type guitars that I really love. Focus on the music not the marketing behind the gear. John’s playing is so good, a real inspiration to us all.
One thing which can't be ignored is resale value. Now if you never plan to sell or are so rich you don't care about resale values then it's irrelevant. However for most of us it is an important factor. I have bought and sold well over 100 guitars and those with a recognisable or well regarded name will always sell much easier than those without a well known name.
For the price I would go with Squire classic vibe. CV would also hold its value better.
Alder is the TRADITIONAL Stratocaster body wood. It's not a cheap variant.
Sounds bright and sparkly, my first strat was a knockoff with that awesome red
Great advert! Impressive specs. You forgot to mention that it has the resale value of a pre-digested sausage roll.
If it is a good enough guitar it should be a keeper, something you need not worry about having a dent or scratch. A back up.
Having gear in rotation is nice but if not carefull very expensive. I always consider something to be or become a keeper before buying.
Perfect! I'll just buy it used ! ❤
This is a dope review. I’m definitely going to look into grabbing one of those. I sold my strat years ago, and now have some prs guitars and other no names. This looks like a quality axe.
One thing I feel let's some of these budget guitars down, is the headstock graphics. Just using a more aesthetic font would make a huge difference in how desirable the instrument is.
When i listen to you play, i really and obviously hear that you have listened a lot
and worked on Eric JOHNSON playing
🙏🙏🎸🎸thank you so much
i have a donner single cut guitar that i got for AUD$129 and then heavily modded with hb sized p90s, locking tuners, duesnberg trem, i leveld frets polished etc and now its one of my faves. i call it the Donner Kebab.
Great sounding guitar. I have a Jet Stratocaster that is outstanding !
Quite a nice Strat tone.
I'm not sure if I saw it right, but it looks like that neck is not centered well? The dot between the third and fourth strings is not in the middle, and it looks like there is more space next to the low E string and very little space next to the high E string? It can be adjusted easily of course..Nice looking vintage model though..
I’ve not heard of Donner before. Nice to have more strat copy options for people
Donner make many musical instruments and guitar pedals too in China for years. Generally more budget friendly prices.
If I were Ibanez, I would be furiously designing a 25.5" AZ Essentials model for next year's NAMM
@@fives. isn’t there one already? Or is that a different scale length?
@@keithb5612 cool, I didn’t know their pedals either (but then I don’t usually spend time on budget pedals). I’ll check them out.
@@NickGranville different scale length - ever so slightly shorter at 25", which, I find difference between 25 & 25.5 is negligible but *just* enough to notice, and I think in terms of tuning stability & the key Strat features (scale length, pickups and bridge response) it would probably be beneficial to up that spec on a future AZE model. Tomo has mentioned in a couple of comment sections that Ibanez are keenly aware of this, but started at a scale more beneficial for the uninitiated and want more public demand for classic spec on the AZE line, which makes sense
Sire guitars have a bone nut!
and rolled fretboard, and a roasted maple neck (well at least the S7 & T7)
Sounds great ! Does it come with the gig bag ? Sometimes your demo guitars (Sire ) appear with bags but for ordinary punters that doesn’t happen .
I think it was in a bag when he took it out of the box.
@@andsoistopped Yeah that’s why I asked the question.
I bought the HB Dual Looper, back in 2017, almost certainly the same pedal with a different paint job ...
I had a feeling Donner would raise guitar pricing after purchasing Sam Ash.
Tomo Fujita was pushing Donner maybe a year or two ago.... This model pretty much same price as a Squier CV in the US.
Dude…many have commented on this but your demo compositions are just brilliant. Really offset your fantastic playing. Seems like a perfectly fine guitar to me 🤷♂️
Bro you should do a video on the new Harley Benton S Type guitars.
Nice Sigma lens
Pretty sure CV’s come with bone nuts and the Sire stuff definitely does
Pickups sound a little too glassy for my taste but pretty decent quality.
It's amazing the quality available these days for the price. " Back in my day" entry level guitars and amps were garbage, not any more.
Good old machete
Basically a better spec’d Classic Vibe with a decent looking headstock. Alder body, rosewood board, rolled fingerboard edges, vintage style tuning machines, etc, etc. But also not definitively cheaper or completely better spec’s than a CV either. For instance, no locking tuners, no two-point trem, nor no mention of fret material. So really depends about whether you need the brand name on the headstock. Could definitely do worse with other comparable imports that hit the mark on quality but kind of miss it on aesthetics because of too great a deviation from vintage Strat body proportions or ugly headstock. For example, the Sire s-style guitars check all the feature and quality boxes but have garishly poor body proportions with the elongated and overly pointy bass side horn and strange headstock shape. This Donner looks like a keeper that will always be serviceable and at least something you can feel good about donating but probably won’t hold its value because of the brand‘s value roots. Knock off about a $100 to $125 from the price and it becomes more of a defensible bargain because there are other budget brands like Harley Benton and Firefly that offer the same features and looks with better reputations, to say nothing of Squier Classic Vibes at about the same price but with the class-leading pedigree.
I would definitely buy a Donner instead of a Squier…if they made guitars like the Paranormal series.
Donner needs more colors.Everything has only a few colors. Until they add more colors I think I will pass. I like the Donner guitars just don't like the limited colors choices.🎸🤘🏻
From what I hear, Donner guitars eat other guitars for breakfast.
Is that a Donner party joke? If yes, brilliant.
Keep your doner kebab ! I keep my Squier !
All guitars should come with a bone nut. Sheesh a bone nut is less than a fiver.
The average guitar player I knew in the 80's should buy a washing machine and clothes 😅
Stainless steel frets. Looks pretty good
Just looked on their site. They go into pretty intense detail on the construction. There was NO mention of stainless frets and I’m pretty sure John would would mentioned that.
@THEItchybruddah Okay thanks I wasn't sure but they look like they are.
I don't like the color. Not sure if I would spend that much on this guitar to be honest. I'll keep an open mind for what Donner comes out with next.
Wow for the money pretty nice. Frets looked Great.
Made in China?
That discount code is wonky, jsyk
OK, and please do a follow-up video in 3-6 months so that people don’t cancel your channel when the neck falls off 😂
That was dumb
Neck won’t fall off. Same maple and bolt on as all other S Type guitars. The problem with affordable off brand is not that it breaks, rather it works and you will have it for decades. If the branding bothers you it will always bother you. But if the branding does not bother you, then you can enjoy the satisfaction of getting better value for money and saving over higher cost branded items.
Probably a decent guitar but it'll have ZERO resale value. Just more cheap guitars for the landfill.
Very slightly dry….
