  • Exploring New Vietnamese Villages | Vietnam Village Life
Today I venture out on my bicycle and explore new and interesting small Vietnamese villages nearby where we live in Vietnam.
Exploring new villages is always exciting and I always come across something very different from the last village. I will meet up with local Vietnamese villagers, Pagodas, rice farmers and many other local people who usually always smile and say a big hello!
Hi, I am Simon and I am an expat from England living in a Vietnamese Village in northern Vietnam. I will be documenting my life in a Vietnamese Village, offering snippets of local daily life in Vietnam.
Living in Vietnam as an expat, I will show you what goes on during a working day or even a playful day. It could be cooking, eating, gardening, fishing, weddings, public holidays, traditional cultural celebrations, riding bicycles or walking through other villages or even making everyday items such as brushes or bamboo items.
I will also document the whole season of rice farming from ploughing the fields to eating a bowl of rice on the table. Follow along with Simon as he explores Vietnam country life.

There are some places, like ends of canals where the dam is closed...that is quite disappointing to see. When the rice farmers are spraying their rice fields the packets of fertilisers are strewn along the paths between rice fields...that's also just bloody lazy!! But generally yeah it does look quite clean and tidy. When it's the holidays, people head out and trim the weeds along the edges of the paths in the village. Me and my family were doing it by the pond on National holidays in September. Rewarding work. Thanks for watching. Tell your friends! @vietnamvillagelife

Love you stumbling upon the statues/temples/pagodas etc. That's 1 of the main things I loved about being in Vietnam and Thailand, the way you can find the most wonderful and serene spots at random whilst blundering around lol. Also, gotta appreciate your bravery to stop at the bier hoi for us - always such a trooper taking 1 for the viewing team!

Traditionally, each Vietnamese village has a chapel: Đình where they worship the Village Deity = Thần Làng (Thần = Holly Spirit. Làng = Village).
I suspect that Phục Linh Pagoda was modified from the original Đình Làng. Few centuries ago they worshiped the Village Deity (their Ancestors) not Buddha. Evidence ?
At minute 11:59 you can see above the Lady Buddha is an Eternal Cycle Wheel (symbolic on the Indian flag). However, there are 2 mismatched dragons that kowtow the Eternal Cycle Wheel (Vòng Luân Hồi)
While in Buddhism the Eternal Cycle Wheel (also known as Metempsychosis) signifies for the cycle of: birth, suffering, death, & incarnation) Buddhism & Hinduism share many common trait in Metempsychosis & have nothing to do with the dragon that is a shared ethos of Vietnamese & Chines where Đình Làng culture was & still is very much prevailing in country sides of Vietnam.
To express the prevailing Đình Làng custom, there is a VNmese maxim: "Lệnh vua thua lệ Làng" = The King decree shall yield to the Village Custom.
I'd recommend a tour of Đường Lâm ancient village (Hamlet actually) only 15km from Hanoi centre (Ba Đình flag pole). Ba Đình: Three Đìnhs = 3 Village Pagodas ( long gone)
Perhaps, Đình was the centre of all VNmese Village Culture.

Really beautiful villGe though not as rich as yours.Howeever I think a very rich village represent sudden flow of wealth that adds little to the characteristic of a typical villGe. I myself like old one or two storey houses with bare bricks or stones showing age mark on them. They represent a true rural village I hope you understand what I aspire to. Please more like this.Cheers!
