    Hi Marc, I’ve owned a red CB500f for a couple of years and toured extensively using throw over panniers, top box and tank bag. None of these affect the superb handling. At 80 years old this fabulous bike will see me out!!!! Thanks for this review with which I totally agree. JB.

      I went from a 50cc 2-stroke to a 1200 Kawasaki. After rolling off the dealership, carefully giving it some throttle .. first time this kind of acceleration is like smoking 10 pipes of meth at once: totally addicting. Will never forget that afternoon.

    I had litre+ bikes, tourers cruisers etc for last 20yrs. I'm getting older and just got fed up having to think about the mass, width, weight of these big bikes, lean angle of the cruiser etc, so I traded my Yam xvs1300 full tourer for 2017 CB500F.
    I looked at what I actually needed - I won't be touring europe again, my wife doesn't go on the pillion any more, my top speed is about 80 on the Mway (which I spend as little time on as possible) and around between 40-60 on the roads which I use most. I don't camp and don't care about keeping up with the pack etc etc.
    The CB is comfortable, cheap to run, tax, insure and get spares for - except the headlight, it's a sealed unit and will cost you £400+ to buy. I thought I would have needed a small wind screen for it, especially after the huge screen of the cruiser, but at my height - 5'8" - the wind pressure/flow is not serious at all even at 70/80. I can get both feet flat on the ground. I'm 63 and can go an hour and a half to two hours before needing a break from the seat, which is perfect timing for coffee breaks. Great proven engine too.
    This bike has brought back the sheer fun of biking to me and have been all over Scotland with it (weather and Covid permitting). Sure, the 'twist the handle and go' of the big torquey bikes is great, but this bike has enough acceleration to get you first from the lights, pass traffic safely and get you out of potential problems. I can corner properly again without thinking about cruiser footboards touching down or the sheer mass of the bike making corners more trying than they need to be.
    Absolutely brilliant pared down bike and the perfect fit for my present biking needs - highly recommended for beginner and experienced biker.

    I owned a CB125R after CBT (UK) and loved it but wanted more power to get up and away from cars behind when I passed my full A licence. I bought a Ninja 650 then and had it for about 6 months but was not confident with the handling at all which surprised me as I'd learned on a Z650. I have just traded it in for a 2020 CB500F and I absolutely love it. I am hugely more confident on it and no longer have that "shall I go out or not?" feeling. I echo everything Mark has said in his review - it's not my first bike but I will probably keep it a lot longer than the other 2...

    HI Mark. Thanks for the review, you obviously really liked the bike. Love the orange and actually I think the screen also looks very good, even tho it's a naked. I'm considering one for commuting (and have also researched Sv650 and Z650) and the occasional long weekend trip, but I'm 6ft 1in. I would defintely fit the screen for motorway work but in your experience of the naked middle-weights, is this potentially the best fit for taller riders...on screen it looks more roomy than the others? I also like the look of the Z650 but it looks too cramped. Also, hard to say perhaps but do you think the small screen made much difference to wind blast? Thanks!

    • @markpulling12
      @markpulling12  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi robin size wise ...this and the z650 not alot of difference...yes the screen helped a little ...as you are tall this bike would be ok but you may want to consider the bigger cb500x as it has a higher seat ..cheers mark

    Great review, thank you. I'm trying to decide between the CB500F & CB500X. I'm only 5'6 (167cm)... so the 500X does feel a little tall (perhaps I could consider a lowering kit, which I could decide to remove once I'm fully familiar/comfortable with the bike?). I can almost flatfoot the CB500F as is... it does seem to be tangibly smaller, I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not. I like the idea of the CB500X being high up for vision & for street presence as well as for what I think might be superior wind protection on the highway. What do you reckon? I'd like to use which ever bike I end up with to do the odd commute to work (30mins highway) as well as be able to pop up to the shops for some quick groceries or a take-away... so I guess that's where I'm being torn - I perceive the 500X to be better for highway duty but perhaps a bit big & bulky to go get a pint of milk; whereas the reverse for the 500F. Gosh, I've prattled on... I'm sorry... just really keen to hear your as well as anyone else's thoughts. Kind Regards ... and keep up the excellent reviewing work!! ;)

      Hi ...I always recommend the cb500f as a first bike for people because of what you said it's smaller than the x model ...I've had the X model myself and it's great but I would recommend the F for yourself at 5 ft 6 because it's better for just popping to the shops on etc ...plus it's a bit sportier in the corners of the mood takes you ...I'm into naked bikes at the moment so the F model would be my choice...either way all the Honda 500 models are amazing reliability and 85 mpg UK economy

    Thank you Mark for the great review. I own one in black, after over a year I still love mine. One thing I disagree with you is the weight, you said its very light? Well it isn't lol, it's about 200 kilos, it's even heavier than MT07. But I guess the weight helps with stability and side winds 😁, but the engine is indeed butter smooth, much much refined than the 2020 Z650 I've tested.

      George Krpan I’ve ridden both, the cb500f may not be as stylish in my opinion but it’s night and day performance wise. The 500 is a much more usable bike if you do any highway travel and still gets like 65mpg. And the power off the line is a bit better. Still wish we could get it in the new style though

    It's a toss up for me between the versys 300, the z400 and this one. I want a light bike but I also want one which is comfortable. This honda seems a little heavy on paper compared to the other two, but is a Honda and probably a lovely bike. I don't have to worry about budgets thankfully so it really does come down to the bike. I am also mindful of our shit roads so being high up (as with with versys ) and having big wheels deals with the shit roads, but then the honda looks great...decisions decisions..

Admittedly I prefer the er more mature styling of the 500 as opposed to the positively juvenile z400 and it has somewhat better fit n finish … and there are very few 500f’s in the streets as most opt for the cb650r or mt07 after the 400cc “stage”.

    Mark, that horrible screen destroys the beauty of the bike. If your thing is naked or super naked or retro style naked I say OWN IT. This is just my opinion unless you simply put a mini screen that only covers the dash, meaning it's only an inch higher than the dash. I like naked bikes because they're fun and also naked. If you want screens and things like that get an adventure bike, just my 2 cents. Cheerio.
