Develop SUPERHUMAN FLUTIST LUNGS - with Debussy Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun - Flute Tube 40

  • Long ago, I had a few requests for a video on breathing. It is finally here!
Today we discuss how to optimize your breathing to play Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun opening solo in one breath. Exploring how to do this best, and most securely (even under pressure), teaches lucky flutists a LOT more about what our lungs can do than most reasonable people ever have reason to think about!
    We discuss:
Three stages of breathing in, plus a bonus, to maximize what you get into your lungs.
A reminder to be careful how you blow out.
Tips for dealing well with breathing, blowing, and oxygen deprivation when you're nervous (or simply adrenaline-filled).

I have never tried the ventilating trick before, but I'm excited to! I'm looking forward to strengthening my lungs and being more aware of them.

I LOVE the 3-tiered breathing idea! It helped me so much when playing this solo with the orchestra and it has really helped one of my young students understand her full lung capacity. It's empowering!

A lot of these things remind me very much of exercises I've done in marching band (couldn't imagine why). I see how that is very similar to the "walking while blowing out" thing because both demand smooth, continuous air support in a slightly stressing situation.

I find that I am better able to play, phrase, articulate, and finger when I have exercised a good amount! When you work your muscles and lungs more than what you need for flute, playing flute becomes easier :)

Another enjoyable and useful video! Thanks. When I go out walking tomorrow I'll do the counting to 30 exercise several times (hope I don't faint!)

This motivates me to exercise and go running more so I can get used to breathing with an elevated heart rate! Thanks for the reminders!

Yes! The coffee straw really helps me. Having a small aperture really makes a difference!

I never thought of the those 3 stages of breathing. Very, very helpful! I'll definitely use this. Thanks! :)

I love the idea to blow out while on a walk! It seems like a healthy, peaceful way to expand the lung capacity.

I think we often forget about what we can practice doing AWAY from our flutes - and how useful that kind of practice can be!

Congrats on the video! Impressive! It seems to be one of the most challenging! The breathing! As a pianist we don’t think about it so often (although it’s very important for every musician, in my opinion,no matter the instrument)

I've heard of doing pushups and then practicing but I love the walking/breathing idea even more! Also thank you for sharing your audition story. What a great reminder to make this as beautiful as possible, rather than focus solely on breathing!

Push-ups then practicing sounds brutal! I try to do both, but with good separation between them 😆

I am going to try running up and down the stairs before I play now! I really want to strengthen my lungs and breath support, especially as I prepare for performances and it’s easy to get nervous.

I love this episode!! It is so relaxing and really useful. My breathing isn’t the best, but I love the steps of breathing to really help me feel where I can fill up more

I think it does really help us to breathe deeper if we break it into stages. No matter how advanced we are!

Dr Clayton, you do have superhuman lungs! Thanks for many good ideas in your flute tube episodes. Would you consider doing an episode on articulation for playing JS Bach? Also please answer these questions about tenuto markings: when does it mean hold the note as long as possible? Does is sometimes mean play separately? Does it mean legato tongue? Thank you for sharing your expertise!!!

Thanks so much! And I know I have an email from you I haven't answered... this time of the semester gets so busy! I can tell from what you write, though, that you have a lot of great tools for your own students! I'll put Bach articulation and tenutos on my list of topics. 👍 Tenutos definitely depend on context, as a quick answer!
