Congratulations to the team! Know this must be a huge boon to finally get official recognition for the awesome work you do with Foundry VTT! ❤
Excited for this. Also a little nervous for how much work I'll need to do in the next month or two to modify my campaigns.
Your mileage may vary, but we've internally ported a number of existing campaigns to the new 3.0 system version and it's been very smooth. A lot will depend on how extensive your active module list is. If you're using Foundry V11 (we hope you are!) you can use our backups and snapshot feature to try out the new system version and then easily roll back if its giving you problems.
I am so pleasantly surprised to hear this news!
Wooow! I'm so happy for you. Congratulations on that partnership, you deserve it so much.
Congratulations! It’s been many years since I played 5e on Foundry & it was enjoyable even without wotc support. Hats off for creating the greatest VTT out there & to your efforts securing this deal.
Holy cow, congrats Atropos and everyone on the foundry team! Foundry was the perfect vtt for me when I came across it in early access, and it's been wonderful to see it grow and thrive as time has gone on!
Finally, and congratulations. Hopefully the joint content will be as well made and handled as some of the other stuff
Huge kudos to the designers who worked on this, looks so good
I'm really hoping that this means for my table (which uses a little bit of some nice automation/ui but is by no means heavily automated) we can start excising the complicated list of modules we currently use. Fingers crossed!
Congratulations to everyone on your team. Looking forward to seeing what is coming.
This is the biggest and best surprise for this start of the year: Thank you very much for this wonderful news !!
Amazing news!! Congratulations to the Foundry team!
Yes. Now i only need to wait for my modules to update and i can update XD. If this had a DnDBeyond compatibility modes as well, I would actually be amazed by WoTC for once since a long time.
I second this, since WotC got involved with DnDBeyond, I can only hope that an official way to import your stuff, especially compendiums and campaigns, from DnDBeyond is going to be a feature in the future!
Wow! I've tried the new system and that was great! Thank you!
Very cool and beautiful! Thank you for your work! I want to draw your attention about the invisible effect, the token doesnt become invisible. But everything else is amazing.
Edited: NVM I didn't know that having no token vision on a map disables invisibility. It all works great with the token vision turned on.
Holy crap! Never though we'd see this!
Looks amazing! Congratulations!
No way!! I'll try it now, that's crazy!
So amazing! Great job! I am very excited for the future!
I haven’t campaigned in over 20 years but just wanted to chime in and say that looks amazing. Awesome work.
What about official DnD content. Does it work like Fantasy Grounds that has pins on maps (for all content)... easy reference for Dungeon masters to find any info by clicking said maps? (auto populates monsters, treasures, automatically placing tokens on battle map, etc?
IF yes.. I'm in. IF no.. maybe not yet. (early Foundry beta tester here)
I'm happy to say that our official content is pre-walled, lit, and populated with tokens as well as pinned journal notes (and a whole lot more) just like you're describing! If you check out the video at around 00:51 you should be able to see it in action.
Are these additional purchases or am i able to use them if i own them on dndbeyond. @FoundryVTT
This is going to be so nice for my Module!
I am very far from being a D&D 5e enjoyer, but I really like that news ! It's really great to see the work done about this update, and I hope more people will feel welcomed and at ease playing their favorite system module from now on !
Does this mean foundry will now have internal access to everything in DnD beyond from rulebooks features items and homebrew?
Or will said integration still be 3rd party?
If it will still be third party when will u change it?
If we make a compendium with the fanmade stuff (the things I've create within) will it adapt to the new game system?
Can’t wait to run this!
If anyone has the answers, it will be useful to know;
.
1) Is this acting as a separate 'game system' to the previous Unofficial DND 5e or is it an update to the current one? - I have several modules and homebrew rule that don't seem to align with the more strict nature of the character sheets.
2) Does the update implement (or plan to) variant rules? Such as spell points or variant encumbrance.
3) Could you add more conditions or change existing one, or are you stuck with standard dnd? (I imagine a module could fix this easily though, but that would take time to be made).
.
Yes I have read the FAQ. Thanks in advance.
Hi there,
1. No, it is an update to the current system.
2. Not at this time! Maybe in the future (no promises!)
3. I...actually don't know the answer to this one! Sorry!
@@anathemam8852 thank you. i'm sure modules will fix most of my issues, but i'll just have to not update for now.
Very cool. Always happy to see Foundry grow.
That Dynamic token engine is very interesting, would be cool to see a system agnostic version.
Congrats guys, and thank you for this. Asta este masiv!
Congrats! The best VTT ever. wouldn't expect less.
Congratulations to the amazing FVTT team (and WOTC too I guess)! Just in time for me to wrap up a multi-year homebrew 5e campaign and catch up on a few recent versions and upgrades!!
If it's official D&D, then does it include D&D Beyond interaction? My players already have character sheets over there.
My biggest question as well. And other stuff on Beyond like Maps becomes a bit pointless.
Found this in the FAQ:
No, the Foundry Virtual Tabletop editions of this premium D&D fifth edition content are not interchangeable with the digital books purchased on D&D Beyond.
Unfortunately that is not something we can offer. Our team incurs the cost of developing and optimizing this content specifically for Foundry Virtual Tabletop, so the Foundry VTT version of a product is not interchangeable with versions purchased elsewhere.
@@umartdagnir This doesn't really address if players can easily use their DDB characters.
I mean, we already have this ability via the Beyond 20 plugin, but it would be nice if D&D and FVTT did it natively.
@@umartdagnir That's not what I asked though. I'd like to know if my players can link their D&D Beyond character sheets to the Foundry game, roll from there, have their HP synced, and so on.
@@mhelvens Use Beyond20 and the Foundry modules to link your campaign log. That's how you do it, and from what I read, that's not changing at least in the short term.
About time. Congrats!
Just bought it. What would be the recommended way to create Player Characters? Is there some guided or automated way?
What an amazing upgrade!
I am STOKED! Awesome news! Can't wait to see more official WotC content on Foundry!!
This is fantastic!
Go Foundry and 5E teams!
Is there a way to make the 'read aloud' boxes in the journal as displayed at 01:10?
This is incredible !
HELL YEAH!!
There will be official packs for the expansion books?
Hoping we get an official DnD Beyond Compendium importer and character Importer!
Well, this is huge.
Congratulations! I'm very interested in how FVTT may interact with DDB in an official capacity moving forward.
1) is this an upgrade of the existing game system module, or something that must be purchased serarately?
2) if the user already has 5E material (PHB, MM, etc.) does this material need to be purchased again to work with the core game module?
3) what is the ETA for this upgrade?
4) what kind of costs would a user be looking at, and what must they buy? (I'm assuming most of this would be set by WotC)
And congratulations.
just wanted to say, that the update just dropped and its indeed a free update to the existing system, can't say anything about your second question
@@joka5672 Thanks! I'll update it tonight and check it out.
How the heck do you get the monster portraits like that? I love those SO MUCH BETTER than the top down view ones.
All these portraits/tokens come in the new Phandelver and Below content!
Now that's a way to celebrate D&D 50th anniversary!
WOWW!!! fantastic news!! yaaay!!!
Very nice. How does it stack up to PF2e's implementation on Foundry? Inquiring minds want to know.
Somewhat less automation at the moment and less content available in the base game system because of differences in licensing approach, but from a features perspective it's pretty comparable I would say. Both game systems are getting ongoing development so both are continuing to improve in parallel - both have areas where they shine.
@@FoundryVTT Thanks for the response! I have a player that prefers 5e, going to have to give this a good look. Congrats by the way.
Oh Yeah !!!
This is great news and I love the look of it! Tried it on a test game but right now it is just too basic with not enough content for classes, subclasses, etc. so I can't use it in my current game. Hopefully this will grow quickly.
Oh, man, ive been waiting for a year or so for this. Are you guys going to sell older adventures, too? I'd certainly purchase Descent into Avernus!
Well this is unexpected. Someone clearly rolling nat 20s on their persuasion check.
Strange this happens after Wotc pushes their VTT
also hoping for older editions (Basic & advanced) to come at some point.
I not understand where are the backgrounds and monsters in the video. We need buy some content in the beyond?
Really hoping for the ability to integrate dndbeyond in some way so my players can create characters and roll there and have HP/level etc synced in foundry. In which case I'd happily buy the monster manual / DMs guide etc for easily accessible monster stat blocks in Foundry!!
I am very excited for these changes, they look amazing. One thing that worries me though is having to purchase all DnD content twice. I already own all of the spells and monsters from Tasha's and Xanathar's but from your FAQ page, it sounds like I will have to buy them again on Foundry. I understand buying adventure modules specifically for Foundry, as a lot more work goes into them, but spells and monsters and other statblocks should just be importable over from DnDBeyond. Can you guys look into that?
+1 At least an ability to integrate DnDbeyond in some way so my players can create characters and have it synced in foundry would be a godsend. In which case I'd happily buy the monster manual / DMs guide etc for easily accesible monster stat blocks in Foundry.
@@fowl3799 There is a module that does exactly that called "DnD Beyond Importer"
1:30 Comaptible
We are having a laugh about how many people reviewed this video and none of us spotted it. Winner.
@@FoundryVTT It's okay, I just wanted to point it out to give you the opportunity to fix it 😄
Feel free to delete/hide my comment since that goal has been reached 👍
@@SerpenTxxxLion Yeah, unfortunately we can't fix it since we can't upload a corrected video. The shame will live with us forever!
Hasbro and Foundry, remember the Brazilian fans who are a large part of the active D&D5th players on VTT and localize the system natively into Brazilian Portuguese! We will be grateful for the affection and reminder that we are a gigantic consumer market for your products!

Quem é BR curte!
UP
Sim, please... Precisamos...
Up

I hope WotC won't discontinue their own tools on Beyond after this.
Wow, it looks beautiful but... will all the modules be lost?
And will the materials be purchased? I mean, the classes and races outside of the player's handbook?
Just hope you guys don't have to kill a certain module for this.
Finally!
MASSIVE!
FUCK YES! Let's go!!!
thats a big step. omg just remember the beginning :)
Embrace, extend, extinguish.
Like many Foundry users, I am loaded with modules such as DAE and MIDIQOL. With the D&D update, I have heard that some of the update handles some cool features that were up until now driven by modules. what modules do I no longer need?
Congrats to this epic boon.
Holy crap
Okay, so everything I've spent years creating won't be bricked, will it?
We've worked hard to avoid that outcome. Make sure to take a backup before updating (using the new V11 backups and snapshots feature) and if anything goes wrong you can roll back to exactly what you had before!
Good news!
WTF!? Didn't see this coming! Thats awesome! Maybe Hasbro learning there lessons from last years disasters
I’m tentatively excited. I’ve already bought some of the books. Am I going to have to repurchase them to play 5e on foundryvtt?
Congratz, I love Foundry but how about PF stuff on foundry or even 3rd party?
Why are you asking them? That's up to PF and 3rd parties.
We already have several content offerings for Pathfinder Second Edition.
The 5e system has been desperate for a rework, awesome. I just wish I knew this was coming before investing so much time into world enhancements this will replace
We would have liked to be more transparent that this was coming, but it's something we had to keep to ourselves for various reasons. Hope it's still worth it!
@@FoundryVTT Oh absolutely! It's the nature of the hobby haha. I'm always happier to have official implementations, especially when they're as well done as this version is looking :)
Happy to hear it has happened. Sadden by the fact they expect me to repurchase books I already purchased on DNDBeyond to access.
Most likely will stay with SRD content and (rolling eyes) 2014 D&D as they deem it. 5E covers me pretty well and I don’t really need (or want) to buy version 5.1 so Wizards can pad their bottom line some more.
me gusta
imagine saying this in 2024😂 the sperg in these comments is real
I’m sure this is probably something to do with my ignorance of some relevant factor(s), but it seems really odd that WotC would license this when they’re developing their own official Maps as part of DDB. Perhaps they’re switching their internal focus to the 3D VTT?
1:32 "Comaptible Tokens"
Did you just choose not to read what came before that part?
is it going to cost extra to update to this new system?
We're dealing with Wizards/Hasbro here. They don't do anything for free or just to be nice. You'll end up having to purchase everything again if you want to see it in Foundry. Or they'll introduce a new Beyond Ultra-Mega-Premium-Dungeon-Master-Plus Subscription tier that allows you to use, NOT transfer, your content in Foundry. That way you have to keep paying just to use stuff you've already purchased.
Nah, it's Foundry, just update it!
Let's try this again since my response "magically" disappeared. We're talking about Wizards/Hasbro here. They don't do anything for free or just to be nice. You'll have to repurchase everything on some sort of Foundry storefront if you want to use it just like you do with R20. That or there will be some sort of Ultra-Premium-Mega-Dungeon-Master-Plus subscription that you have to get on Beyond. Then you'll be allowed to USE your stuff on Foundry but only while subscribed. You won't be able to port it over. That's my guess anyway.
this is huge; slightly nervous for the future of the ddb importer but this official partnership is a big W for foundry. if i have to shill out for these books a third time i'm gonna sob but foundry is such a damn good vtt that i just might..
Does this mean we can get all the races/classes and stuff not in the SRD into foundry. I had already bought it for FGU, but most of my players didn't like it. It eventually killed the group. I bought Foundry and kind of resigned to talking my players back with OSE or OSRIC or something, because 5e is just too big to manually enter everything. But my group prefers 5e. so I looked and I only see the SRD stuff. I would LOVE to get everything, even if it meant paying for it once again. it cost almost 2k for all of it in FGU. :( so annoying I have to buy the books and buy and buy but I really want to play.
Will It work with one DnD?
Will this mess with all my homebrew stuff, like classes and skills and items and monsters? I'm hyped you finally have official backing ❤ The update looks fantastic!!!
EDIT: Looks like it bricked some of my homebrew skills... and also Wildshape unfortunately 😭
If you created your homebrew content with the help of modules you may need to wait until those modules are updated to work with the latest release. If you were only using core system features things *should* work as expected generally and be migrated to the new version. If they're not, please join our Discord or head to our GitHub (github.com/foundryvtt/dnd5e/issues) to post an issue so we can look into it!
Roll for initiative...
As cool as this integration has the potential to be, I have some very real concerns that 'official' implementation of things like automation threaten to deprecate the years worth of work the Foundry 5e community has been doing up until now. Then there's the obvious elephant of things being tied to WOTC/Hasbro, and how that 'official' title can be used to strongarm the content creation of many small independent creators. Personally I hope updates will veer more towards streamlining the integration of other game systems as opposed to trending towards a fixation on 5e, as I feel like that has been the weakest part of Foundry since its official release, and many people in recent years have grown disillusioned with the product that is 5e.
So yeah, cool announcement! *
* heavy on the asterisk... *
The game system continues to be developed by the same folks in the community who were doing it before. Additionally the game system continues to provide SRD content under the Creative Commons license and MIT licensed codebase, so the development side of things is not less open than it was before.
@@FoundryVTT That's great to hear! I should've clarified that I meant modules, but yeah, I'm sure much of my trepidation is just an aversion to change.
@@FoundryVTT good to see you guys have sold out. I wonder how many creators will back out due to this decision. I wonder how much "exclusive content" is gonna take presidence over community content. I wonder how many paywalls will be erected in the name of your new partnership.
These arent bright days for your community.
@@heli0mancer I suspect there's not anything we can say because this sort of doomsaying really isn't rational - but time will tell!
It's about time that WotC finally acknowledges and supports Foundry. My question really is, what is this going to cost us? Obviously modules (Phandelver and Below) and bestiaries (the monster manual etc) is going to be a paid for content. But what of this core 5e engine update?
I love foundry, but I am not eager to financially support WotC.
The game system update (version 3.0.0) and all its amazing new features are free! Only content like adventures and core rulebooks (like the Monster Manual) would be paid content.
@@FoundryVTT I am most relieved to hear this, I look forward to jumping into my foundry instance later on today and checking out the new features :)
@@FoundryVTTsooo we're gonna have to pay for the compendiums now??
If I used the previous compendium, are they gonna send Pinkertons after me?
WAIT WHAT
Just checked it and this DOESN'T come with the full compendium (items, spells, etc for easy drag and drop) so that's pretty annoying.
I haven't tried version 3 yet but the previous ones came with the SRD compendium, so I assume this does too.
Keep in mind that the System is not aiming to provide all content from the PHB - and can't, license-wise.
@Zandaarl whats the point then? Im still gonna have to update all the spells for the players. Why even be excited about this? Its just a huge thorn in any DMs side if they're using literally anything to help them homebrew stuff
@@heli0mancer exactly. It's incredibly annoying. They don't even give the option to purchase them as modules like most other rpgs do.
Funnily enough, a main reason i ditched 5e was because I didn't like the 5e fan module among other issues. We swapped to pathfinder, and I've spent more money on pathfinder then I ever had D&D, and have no plans going back. Glad for those that will use this though!
Very close for me. I've started Pathfinder 2e and the Foundry implementation is just stellar!
The only reason why I'm still playing D&D (with Owlbear Rodeo) is due to ongoing campaigns, otherwise I'd have switched over to PF2 thanks to the awesome Foundry integration for both mechanics and (base) content like monsters, spells, items, feats and stuff.
The (unofficial) D&D stuff in Foundry always felt like a pain in the but to get up and running (eg. importing monsters, spells etc)
This might really change things tho...
Is this all a free update?
All of the content in the official game system is included as a free update. The only thing that will have to be purchased is the premium Phandelver and Below adventure. You can even use the dynamic token engine with your own art without issue!
Congrats to the Foundry folks. Has me thinking twice about a WoTC product.. haha.
Ok En Francais maintenant
Are there plans to include additional material aside the SRD? This is so hype
Well, this was unexpected.
Wotc needs Foundry. Not the other way around.
Can't wait to undo all the work I've been doing ugh
So long as Tencent stays out of it.
Comaptible Tokens ;3
It means you can use your tokens together with your maps, they are co-map-t... whatever, you get the point!
