- This video is about running a smooth Foundry VTT game. Here are all the things I try to do to keep the game moving. I've included all my must-have modules that I use on the regular, and how I organize everything on foundry. These things help me run a VTT game more efficiently. I try to keep my module list down and simple because that is what works best for me. But remember what I do is what I found works for me. You need to find what works best for you AND your players. And when you do find that, please share it with me in the comments or on our discord!
// ALL THE MODULES I MENTIONED
These are the Foundry VTT Modules I mentioned. Just copy these links and then paste them into the "manifest URL" and hit install to add them to your Foundry Server. I put them in alphabetical (not based on when they showed up in the video). I'll also put a brief summary of my use in the "(parenthesis)".

Thank you so much oh my god I just used foundry for the first time today after transitioning to Roll20. I spent about 3 actual days converting everything over and when it came time to play I discovered I couldn't just click to release my selected tokens which made applying damage automatically mess up so many times. Clicking to release is so much better thank you!
It's a tiny thing that I feel like saves so much frustration especially in the beginning! Glad it helped!
I often find something I've overlooked in your videos and this one was no exception. It's very helpful to hear how other GMs run their games and your enthusiasm for the subject comes over very well.
Oh good!! I'm so glad that it's helpful! That's always the goal 😄
2:04 The modules "Forien's Copy Environment" and "Force Client Settings" help with this
You teach great tips & tricks about FoundryVTT to game masters. You wear a t-shirt that say you like "cats and coffee". I really had no other options: subscribed. :-)
Hahahaha. You're in great company!
I'm trying to watch all your videos now. they are very practical and this informed me alot about foundry which i have not used.
This was stellar. Well done.
Bookmarking this.
I’m back on foundry vtt and ready to run tables!
This is great thank you so much for this!! I’ve just started dming online and spent monthhh learning foundry but when it came to the first session I found it so clunky to keep notes. Keep these videos coming 💙
I hope this helps you! Good luck with your campaign!!!
Really good, had no idea i could set that left click release, that is actually awesome. keep up the good work
You're not the only one to say that! So glad you found something useful!
Omg the pathfinder premade adventure thing is so relatable, In the end I read through my adventure like 3-4 times, cut out all the unnecessary fluff and ran it that way instead, as nice as it is to have all the info there, having it set up in a better way would be much prefered...
Thanks for all the awesome tips btw! Have a lovely day
This is totally what I do. You can always re-import stuff if you deleted too much, but I like to take my own notes on things because it helps me really learn the adventure. Also I use the adventure more like guidelines anyway. I tend to add more stuff or let cool things (that make sense) happen even if it's not exactly what they should do according to the module.
great tips, thanks for the suggestions
This is a really helpful video. I already know of and use several of these tools, but picked up some good tips on things I didn't know about!
Glad to hear it!!
Blank grid for emergency map.... Ugh so obvious but I never considered it. Great idea.
I know right? Like obviously not rocket science.and it feels silly to even say but at the same time, even I had a *facepalm* type moment with it.
Great tips, thanks. I really like the uh-oh scene 👍
Great video, good advice! I also recommend Monk's Token Bar, it gives you a small display of all characters in the scene along with their vitals (configurable) and info like passive perception. Very helpful! Also, I am now going to buy my wife that cat& coffee t-shirt. :)
Pretty sure I found the shirt on Amazon!
I'm starting to use Foundry/The Forge for online gaming. My ruleset of choice is Savage Worlds (SWADE), however, here's what I'm running if it helps anyone.
Core Mods:
Break Time
Combat Chat
Compendium Folders
Dice So Nice!
Dice Tray
Drag Ruler
Global Progress Clock
Image Hover
Monk’s Bloodsplats
Monk’s Combat Marker
Monk’s Enhanced Journal
Monk’s Little Details
Pings
PopOut!
Simple Calendar
Subfolder Indent
The Forge: More Awesomeness
World Explorer
SWADE Specific Mods:
SWADE Immersion Module
SWADE Tools
SWADE Ultimate Condition Changer
Something I don't see from a lot of these videos is for performance basic stuff, try to keep as many assets as you can as compendiums. Basically anything in your main asset tabs is always loaded in regardless if the players can see it or not but the compendium is like a cold storage which only the DM can access, when you drag from a compendium that creature or creatures will be imported into your assets and only then will the asset be loaded on all players.
This can lead to dupes fyi
I have actually mentioned that in other videos. I think the basics one if I'm remembering correctly. It's a good tip!
The cat and coffee t shirt got me. New sub choom!
Pretty sure I bought it on Amazon so you can find it somewhere there I'm sure
You can just hit 'esc' to unselect tokens you don't have to drag select an empty space. Although most people would still probably find left-click empty space to be better
Good point, I guess I like having the option of left click though
As someone who does have over 100 modules active I’m always curious so see what other people are using as I’d like to decrease my active modules. Would you be willing to share your module list?
I feel called out, 132 modules and counting xD
Hahaha 🤣
How long has that option for left click to release/unselect token option been there! All this time and only now do I discover it's a thing 😅. Popout is also a new module to me 🙃
Haha, I feel that way about stuff with foundry all the time. Someone is always telling me something new about it. There's just so many options and things to keep track of. Glad to know that this video helped you though haha. PopOut is SO nice. You'll love it!
I'm finding that MIDIQOL isnt working if you've updated to the latest D&D version (3.0.4) unless I am missing something?
Midi QoL doesnt work with dnd5e version 3.0... There is a Beta module that you can install that does work with some minor hiccups.
Ah yeah, this. There's a beta github link I was using. Also this video was made BEFORE that update
Are there settings to change art of the areas
I'm not sure what you mean. Can you be more specific?
what can be done to import tokens and organize them?
You'll have to get a bit more specific. Are you importing actors, like from the compendium or are you trying to import just token images? Are you importing from outside resources (like d&d beyond)?
I think the way they get imported affects organization quite a bit. And changes what you are organizing. If its the data folders, certain modules organize them on import (like tokenizer and dnd beyond importer) and you simply select the folder. If you are importing a batch of images to pull random token images for (with the wildcard feature) then you get to choose where they go.
Otherwise if you are organizing actors etc, I talk about that in the video, but typically I organize it into 3 types of folders: players, NPCs and Monsters. Then the Monster folder has sub folders for: commonly used and then folders for each scene. This also allows me to export them to a compendium so they aren't taking up room and causing lag.
Hope this helped. If not, you should join the discord and we can chat more about it. You can also get help from some of the other foundry vets there haha
What version of VTT are you using please?
V11, it's the latest
11! Sorry I think I only mentioned it like half way through the vid 🤦♀️
Kylie, you seem like the kind of person that likes cats and coffee.
Hmmm.... Do you think so? No IDEA how you came up with that idea
@@CantripsMedia Hmmm, not sure. I could just kind of read it on you.
Hahahahahaha
Pity that Midi-QOL doesn't support PF2e.
I THINK there's an equivalent called Workbench. I would have to look it up again though to say for sure
@@CantripsMedia Yeah! PF2e Workbench automates a bunch of stuff.
Figured I'd complain to up your engagement :D
I wouldn't recommend midiqol to anyone. The module automates way too much if the game and other smaller modules do it better. Sure, it's very customizable but I think the few things you want it to do outside of total automation aren't worth installing.
They have some quick presents on the far right if you want to set varying degrees of automation from simple to complete.
I disagree with this. You can customize the crap out of midiqol. So if your players want to roll you can set it up that way, although it will take some time to go through all the settings. Check the workflow tab.
MidiQoL is great. The amount of customization should work for anyone.
We’re running a really automation-light game and use midi! We have a couple effects from certain abilities that just needed midi to work so we installed it but used the preset that keeps automation to a minimum and did a couple customizations from there and it’s great!
