KTM Dreaded Black/Brown Tank / Striped Tank Syndrome! What caused it? Don't let this happen to you!

  • It appears that some clear fuel tanks react to the sunlight or indoor lighting and discolors the inside of the tank. While this does not change the function of the tank, it definitely makes it harder to check the fuel level and having fuel is a good thing!
Please feel free to chime in and give your thoughts on the issue. Is there a fix? Maybe, there is a different cause other than what was presented in the video?

Never seen it before, try pressure washing the inside of the tank. I run Vp octanium without that.

Ive not run any octane boosters or any additives but mine has done the same.

PS. Mine has gone brown right at the top where fuel never sits.

Could have you used a pressure washer attachment to get in there and clean it ?

I don't know what causes the discoloring but I know peroxide and uv light can get rid of yellowing on plastics. I also added a metal serviceable fuel filter in my KTM500 tank. I saw that the plastic ones were splitting at the seam on some peoples bikes.

Great feedback and good information! I am glad to hear that upgrading the fuel filter wasn't a waste of time as I kind of wondered before I did it! :) I'm like you though, it is so much better to turn some wrenches in the comfort of your home that trying to do a field repair in the wilderness somewhere or getting towed home.

Never liked enduro white tanks, blacks the best i.m.p.o in New Zealand the lads avoid higher octane fuel as it discoloures, KTM needs to do a black tank with level strip.

I love the black tank idea with a clear strip to view fuel level! Awesome idea as it would look better and still function!

@@oregonmotojohn you could just do a professional black etch paint adhesive coating on the plastic and pin mask a perfect line for fuel level?
