There are several methods included in this video such as using a spade to remove grass, using a grub hoe to remove grass, using a quail sod cutter to remove grass, using a sod cutter to remove grass and finally using a Toro Dingo to remove grass.

    Nice video. Question: If I cut up all the sod and then turn it over, then cover with wood chips, will the grass start growing again? I don't want to use landscape fabric and it's a pain in the butt tracking down enough cardboard for sheet mulching that I will need.

    well, some great methods there John! However, I don't have that machine which you used towards the end so I personally just dig about a foot down, overturn the soil and shake the soil with my hand to loosen any weeds. I find it works best in keeping out weeds but it's not as reliable if the soil is like clay, although I've still known it to work. It can be time consuming though prepping large borders in this way. Your machine looks handy though :) cheers!

However, I'd love to have a career like yours! I've only just got into landscaping since seeing your videos so I'll see where life takes me :). If you see this John, do you know if my beds will be completely weed free by removing all roots and laying bark mulch or will yearly maintenance still be required?

    Another Great Video! Keep them coming. There is always a tool that you acquire that you wonder how you lived without it before. The tool that I am writing about is the King Of Spades. The King of Spades is an all steel Nursery Spade that works incredibly well for removing grass, turning soil, and edging. I bought the King of Spades about 4 years ago for $80. This may seem a bit pricey, but this tool will out live me and the next generation to come. The King of Spades is definitely worth your consideration.

      +Land Designs Unlimited LLC ,
      Wolverine Tools makes a better spade than King of Spades. I like it better. it is heavier, the D handle is welded smooth with no sharp edges to cut your hands, and I prefer the angle of the blade to the handle over the King of Spades. BTW, you can wear them out after digging many thousands of trees I'm rocky ground.

    I had a few questions. I'm looking to remove some grass in my patio area (small area), but I know nothing about landscaping. Would I just remove the top grass (sod) like this, then tamp it down, put landscaping fabric over it, put landscaping staples into it, and then cover the top of that with gravel? I keep looking for answers, but no one has been very helpful yet in their responses to me. Also, would I need to use mulch with my project? Lastly, sometimes when it rains it kind of floods a couple inches, so is it okay to use the landscaping fabric then? Thanks for any help.

St Augustine grass is really tough and I'm not sure this would work / I guess I'm not really trying to remove grass but doing more than just that. Grade, level, then install sprinkler lines and then sod... What would be the best way?...

    My husband insists on planting shrubs and plantsstraight in the grounds without desodding first because he thinks or write lawn will erode if we desod plant beds (so annoying). How can I go in now and desod around shrubs and plants to make proper beds.

    • @CTSCAPER
      @CTSCAPER  Před 4 lety +2

      I've been told (by my wife) that husbands can be that way (annoying). :-)
      You have to remove the grass using one of the hand methods or use a non-selective herbicide (I'm not a fan or any chemical use in the landscape). I prefer hand methods. Other options are sheet mulching with cardboard underneath ) YT search it or laying a black tarp over the weeds for a week in the summer and literally cooking the weeds. I've never tried the black tarp method but it looks promising if the plants look stressed remove the tarp so you don't kill them.

      James-west oz garbo productions u need to kill the weeds 1st. Then back/grub ho it. A flat end shovel will work and sod cutter. Get up at 4am because its going a long day. I don't recommend spray because they so harmful if inhaled , its the fastest way though and cheapest 2hrs and. 3-7$ a. Bottle. You can. Also buy sum stuff to kill ur grass completely in the area of choice,but it will take 2-5 days before u get it yellow dead. And can work it.

    • @CTSCAPER
      @CTSCAPER  Před 2 lety

      I live in CT which is a totally different climate than south Florida. First, I'm jealous of your climate, especially in the winter. More importantly, you grow what are known as warm season grasses. Our grasses, aka cool season grasses, go dormant in the heat of the summer your grasses go dormant in the cool of the winter. In south Florida they may never go dormant. Try searching some videos for how to care for warm-season grass or maintaining warm-season grass and see if someone seems like they know what they are talking about. Good luck!
