Just thought I would let you know that your helpful video helped inspire me to dig up a portion of my lawn to make room for a raised bed (Mother's Day gift from my children). In addition, I used the nice pieces of sod to fill in an area I was thinking about reseeding. It took me many hours and a lot of aching muscles, but I got it done. It worked just as you showed. Thanks for making this video. It really helped show me I could do it too. My husband also now has jumped in and the very next day, placed my new raised bed in it's spot. Just dirt now and away we go...

You seem like such a sweet lady! My son and I are working on uplifting sod...but we've been doing it with a shovel, which works but that little shovel you used looks like it would be easier to make the cuts into the grass/dirt. Am going to Home Depot tomorrow to see if I can find a couple of those! Thank you for this insight...you've been most helpful! 😇

Can't wait to see what you plant and how it'll look like in the end. I would love to see a whole front yard re-do or something. My parents have been struggling with their front yard for years. They want something pretty but also low meaintenance and they don't want to do grass.

The downfall about placing plants in any location in or near utility boxes, is that at any point in time, any and all utility companies can come and dig up that location WITHOUT approval.

Nice to see a woman showing us how to do it. A lot work but I thought you were doing your whole lawn. If that was the case I would definitely hire someone to do that. It’s not just the physical labour it’s where to put this heavy grass once lifted and the weight of it. I live alone now as I’m 65 and my husband passed 17 years ago. One son and he’s always busy so that little bit you dug out would do me in dear but well done ! Good job and thank you

I was outside extending one of my flowerbeds and kept thinking that there has to be a better way.
    1. My ground is super wet, which I thought would work in my favor. Nope.
    2. I did not work in sections like you did so I was only getting super small sections of grass with tons of effort.
    3. So glad you teach even the simplest projects for newbies like me.
Guess I will be doing this another day when the ground dries out. Now for some mint tea and a shower!

I wish I could show you my fairy garden. I went to Home Depot a couple of days ago to get some plants, I might have gotten a little carried away. I honestly have no idea of what I got. All I know is that they all needed full sun and about the same amount of water. I used some Japanese house that I got from a bonsai planter. I used sand and stones as a pathway to the house. Therefor I outlined the path with white shells as well as some crushed glass and a mixture of small pebbles to cover the empty spaces. In addition, I added two tall plants in the back of he pot- on with a tall stalk and maroon/red flowers and the other like tall stringy grass with purple flowers at the top. Then I added just a little bit of succulent ground cover. Furthermore, I joined some scattered shells and white droopy flowers that hang over the side of he pot. Overall I think that I did a wonderful job at making my very first fairy garden.

Thanks for the vid. But my job would have taken much longer because I would have reclaimed the soil stuck to the bottom of the sod. My preferred method is to use the serrated edge of a narrow hand trowel and bang off the soil. Much time and labor, especially with clay soil, but I just hate throwing away perfectly good soil.

I don't know if you'll see this because it's been 7 years, BUT: If you accidentally cut an extension cord, you can actually salvage it by doing a clean cut and purchasing a new plug to splice in. I'd recommend looking up a video. You could alternatively make it into a quad box, essentially turning it into a multi (4 plug) extension cord.

Thanks, l need to remove a strip of 5 feet x 30 feet of grass to plant a row of arbivore north trees.....got 2 in, six to go. Ongoing project, learning a ton from watching you two on CZcams, thank you for sharing👍. Oh, l planted a hydrangea, a daisy may and a purple sh..... ALL P.W. plants from Home Depot this past Friday.....last year l planted a milkweed, 2 roses (one red, one white climbing), a ?, a ?, and a ?.....They are all protected by home made wire surrounds as the rabbits chewed them down to the quick last year. Have SO very much to learn, but when l was in Home Depot l recognized a LOT of the plants that you have planted in your gardens.
I rec'd 11 seedlings from a tree promoter and am going to plant them to see how they can get growing. Got a 10-10-10 fertilizer and use eggshells with fresh growing soil. Lots of fun, have been blessed by God to have a double property with a space to create🤗.
    God bless Garden Answer. T.Y.

and yes lifting up sod is a pain in the ass. The "making squares" was the best method I found too. I've done tons of beds. I use little flags and marking paint to map them out and sometimes a hose. And really when doing it around cable boxes like that be very careful and call 811 if you have to. At our house they buried the cable line just under the sod. Had to be super careful not to slice it. Take that half moon edger and put an angle grinder to it to sharpen it. The it slices like butter. Use sharpened garden spade to lift up under squares. :)

So, this is all hindsight, seven years later, but, I took out a 10 x 20 foot swath of lawn, with newspaper and cardboard. First, make a plan and decide what you want, and where. Did the holes, amend the soil, if necessary, and place the plants. Place cardboard to cover all exposed grass. I left some space around the plant for feeding in the future. Cover the cardboard with mulch, good soil, etc. No digging, and no weeds for the next year. Neat and clean. I started out with newspaper, but you need a lot of it, and wind can be a problem. You have to keep it wet as you go. Cardboard is more forgiving. And, either cardboard or newspaper is far, far better than landscape fabric, which I used only once and had to rip up two years later. Awful for plants and soil.

Well since my 'lawn' is bermuda grass, it's heavy weed killer for me. I have tried everything to get rid of it, and it is horrible. This video is for small areas, city yards? with actual grass. But the problem is many people do not have that. The best way is to cover the entire area with heavy black plastic and wait like 2 or 3 months if you have a large area of invasive plants.

Love your videos!! When you remove the sod for landscaping, do you need to add dirt? I'd like to extend and reshape the line of our landscape in the front of our house to go down beside the driveway but wasn't sure if I could just plant right into the newly lowered ground after the grass removal or if I needed to add dirt so it matches the sidewalk height.
