The Balotelli Paradox

  • Mario Balotelli is one of the most interesting characters in world football. With just as much natural talent as tabloid headlines, the striker has had a rollercoaster of a career playing in England, Italy, France, Switzerland and Turkey. How can a player be so good yet so inconsistent? This is the Balotelli Paradox. Enjoy!

Cool video. I worked as a football journalist for a long time and I was doing my first steps when Balotelli came around. But he is a cool character, no doubt about that.

I still today love balotelli. He was such a charming player before he got his first premier league title. He always showed up when no striker was available due to injuries. He was my hero when he scored the two goals in the euros. I still think if he had maintained his form better, he would have gotten the euro cup with Mancini which would be one of the most wholesome story after their fist fight. He had had good spell for almost every clubs he joined beside Liverpool. He hasn't fallen off. He just wanted to live his life he wants in a way. But people should watch his positioning and penalty kick. He seemed to get into position out of nowhere like inzaghi. Just really miss his high times as a city fan

I don't think anyone would ever doubt his talent, but imo he ends up in that category of "what could have been"... but at the same time, in many ways it's just unique how he went about his business across his career... like Balo for sure lived the life of many men in the past decade

It’s such a shame that it genuinely seemed like he’d only play to his capabilities when he gave a shit.
But man when that guy was switched on, the level of football IQ, the guy wasn’t like a typical striker relying on pace and strength. He had the strength, but watch most of his goals, he almost literally stops the play and just in a pin point moment of crazy precision will just rifle it into the top corner. Hold up play and lay it off perfectly.
It’s ABSOLUTELY insane how his games could bounce between him playing at the peak of his powers, or him not giving a shit and just trying stupid tricks and flicks.

    Maverick that's polite.
I would describe Zlatan or Jay-Jay Okocha as being a maverick. With Balotelli, I do not see any cohesive thought pattern.
Mourinho has dealt with unconventional footballers in the past like O'tto, Zlatan, Deco but with Mario all that I see is panic and confusion.
In the end he will always disappoint.
Maybe after retirement he will realize what could or should had been.
He had even been able to look after himself.
Considering athleticism was one of his strongest attributes he has been playing walking football since his time at Nice. When was the last occasion Balotelli lasted 90 minutes?
He plays in a team sport. There has to be some level of unity but time after time, he has proved either that he doesn't get it or care about it.
Look at the team in Turkey that he currently is with. Midtable. Maybe they are the only ones willing to deal with him.
Even 37 year old Dzeko is at Fenerbache.
I've been watching Balotelli since about 2007.
Even when managing Italy, Mancini eventually ran out of faith with Balotelli despite the lack of quality strikers.

One of my favorite players. In the late 2K, in terms of talent, was up there with Zlatan, Rooney, Messi, Adriano, Eto and Ronaldo. Racism broke him down. Black players in Europe aren't built like Black players in America. Do not have that support system. Do not have that history of dealing with the BS. Then there's this. Say the wrong thing to the wrong Black player in America and you might not make it home.

The Entire Football Community ruined him. We are so fickle as a society & many have deep seeded prejudice & I really feel a lot of this could be founded on pure racism. Loved him as a youth prodigy, adopt a narrative of his bad attitude/character.. City stunt his growth (vs.Dzeko/Tevez/Aguero). In awe of him after the Euros. Then suddenly he's apparently not good enough to be a squad player (Choupo-Moting). But how is Gascoigne viewed in comparison & what about Icardi's character?

Thanks for your feedback, I think we disagree on some of the storytelling & creative.. Alot of people know the career of their favorite footballers, but often the beginning narratives & the adversities they face on their pathway to success is what makes the progression so interesting... & is not highlighted in any mainstream media outlets
      Just my take +

The portrayal of Balotelli as some wild card who does things his own way is inaccurate, at best. A lot of it is translation issues, his actions and words sound cooler in English than in Italian. Perception here is very different. He's not a maverick, he's a spoiled brat from a nice neighbourhood. A fake-tough guy fraud who bitches and whines whenever he's questioned, and pretends being Ghanain means his upbringing was Boyz n the Hood whenever people criticize any of this.
At 4:19 "many of the veterans want you to be a humble superstar", maybe this is true in England and elsewhere, but here no. The culture is different. Obviously humility is preferable, but you can be obnoxious and egotistical and still be a star. Thats over half of our national heroes right there, Maldinis are few and far between. Mario's failure in Italy was due to his insecurity and inability to handle pressure, which is expected in young players. It was his refusal to grow up which caused issue there. I can't say he's an asshole or anything, actually in interviews he seems like a nice enough guy, it was his habit of crying to the media what soured opinions. We all love a crazy outburst, but Mario wasn't yelling like Spalletti, he was bitching, and it gets very draining very fast.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. A big reason Balotelli is a "what if story... or a what could have been story" is undoubtably due to his attitude & off the pitch choices. You can be a fan of him & also acknowledge that... I would still say he was most definately a wild card & did things his own way... even if it wasn't liked or supported
That also doesn't mean it was "the right way"
Balo's talent was world class, & his off the pitch situationships made him famous & interesting ont top of the football talent... but also completely damaged his career trajectory with the sport. When it comes to plenty of the racism, that is documented heavily throughout his career & noone should face that type of hate regardless if you like or dislike him as an individual.

To be honest, you have basketball player like Dennis Rodman who was crazy off the pitch but keep it very together in his time on the court despite some fallout. I think some modern psychology could have made him contribute more. If you can get him perform like the time he scored two goals against Italy, he would have been very accepted.

@@artie8561 Damn thats a perfect example. Yeah, Balotelli was Dennis Rodman for one match, against Germany. That was it, every other time he could have been that guy, he flopped or disappeared. Italy loves the crazy guys, as long as they're the crazy guys who show up. Balo had the swagger but none of the moments.
So to the rest of the world, maybe he's seen as a Cantona-who-never-was, but here he's just another Alessio Cerci.

@@TheFootballRecords ha, the racial thing is for the Anglosphere. You're okay with chants about Suarez' teeth, chants like "the baby's not yours", chants about dead family members, criminal prosecutions, being ugly, short, fat, anything. But when its racial, its some horror thats akin to assault with a deadly weapon.
Yeah we don't care. An insult is an insult. If we wanted to be harsh, we'd be insulting his mother, or that he doesn't know her. Its a cultural thing. He was born here, he knows this, but why ruin a good headline
