    Cowboy Bebop is about loneliness. Each character is a loner. Each of them deal with loneliness differently. They weren't always loners (except for Ed I guess) but some event happened in their lives to make them turn to themselves for comfort.
    While each character prefers solitude they don't mind the company of other people. It's like being a loner in real life (I can relate). You don't really like people, you try to keep your distance but you don't mind the company of a few every now and then. This point is proven by Spike when he says he hates 3 things, women, kids, and animals and yet he has all 3 on board.
    This is because Spike enjoys the company of others despite being alone most of his life. Same goes for the crew members. But this does not mean they are dependent on others. Just as easy as the group comes together they leave in the same manner. On a quick breeze. I'm sure after Spike dies and Ed/Ein leave I doubt Jet and Faye stay together for much longer.
    In fact Samurai Champloo is the same way. The 3 characters come together, all 3 being somewhat loners go through a long journey, enjoying each others company despite them saying they don't. Then when their job is complete they all go their separate ways without much thought to it.
    I enjoyed Cowboy Bebop much more than Samurai Champloo but they are both great anime. I guess because Cowboy Bebop had a more serious tone(for the most part) and Samurai Champloo was a bit more satire/comedy.

      Indeed what a great analysis of the animes characters as well as the mental state of a loner.

      Well, that's your take on it. What I think Cowboy Bebop is about
      Is that no matter what you're backstory or what happened,
      You still belong in this world, it doesn't matter what is thrown at you.
      Even if you're stuck in the past. You have friends to help you out. Now see you, space cowboy.

      @@b.s_aint_it That's a very positive outlook on the series, but I think the guy above seems right on the money. Loneliness is a real thing in real life and you won't always have friends to help you; while it helps take a load off your shoulders good things don't last forever. Pretty soon all you friends and family move on to other places as well as you the harsh truth is your friends won't always be there for you not because their selfish but because of circumstances.

      I liked samurai champloo better personally because of the character development. The episode where Jin met that suicidal woman and where Mugen's past caught up to him are episodes that I'll never forget.

    My personal personality theory the cast of the Bebop crew represents the four elements.
    Spike being water. Fluid in combat and in lifestyle, Intuitive, Soothing yet aloof like waves in an ocean depending on the strength of the "tide" or" wave" introduced in his life.
    Jet - Earth. Supporting, Mature, stubborn (due to his history prior to the series of his experiences and being the oldest of the crew), practical and blunt.
    Faye - Fire
    Smoldering alluring ĺooks that captures male attention like moths to a flame. Temperamental when upset or when things aren't going her way and short-sighted in the larger scope things in life similar to fire not kept for a long time and gets put out.
    And Ed representing Air. Fleeting, Logical to a fault, detached with familiar bonds (see her father for example) & eccentric.

    I think the way they kind-of told Vicious and Julia's stories backwards says a lot about those two.(or at least Spike's view of them). I think that's what the whole bit about one eye looking forward, and one looking back, was referring to.

    It's kind of common sense that the relationship with Vicious was toxic. I mean the character screams unstable. If you want to see in the same story how a relationship between a less insane counterpart could be, just refer to how Jet was towards his ex even though he was treated like crap by her. He stayed calm and cool, even though you could sense him holding back his emotions. (this is from memory recall). I loved this show and many from its time for their perceived depth of story. The story, the more you understand the characters and use your imagination in an educated manner, is very deep. Even so with Faye falling for Spike and her having a crush on him the whole time without her even realizing it. Some source stated that she was even much like Julia in personality, so Spike could have been her match. anyhow, I'm liking your videos. Keep it up!

    • @giovannifierenze3444
      @giovannifierenze3444 Před 8 lety +8

      There's an hint, absent in the english dub, which might suggest Julia was a Red Dragon's prostitute. Even if Julia and Vicious were actually a couple, i really doubt it took long for her to realize Vicious was a monster who betrayed everyone he could exploit and killed the rest

    Asteroid Blues helps us see the situations of the love triangle more clearly. Vicious was not the same as he was in past clips. He changed for the worst. His eyes and expression tell it all. Julia wanted out but it wasnt that simple. Im not a big fan of infidelity but I think in this situation, it was justified and the best decision that could have been made.

    I, without a doubt, appreciate my childhood a notch more with every video you produce.Spike was the guy who drew me into the show from the start and defined swagger at a time when anime experienced more complex methods of characterization (Gundam Wing, Evangelion, Big O, etc). I knew about the love triangle the second time I watched CB, but I still didn't give a care about Julia and Vicious until this video. If he had not linked with Julia, however, this series would have never happened at all. Spike needed a reason and a way to escape from both past and future.
    Ein doesn't offer as much material as the other crew members, and it's tough to break him down when the only episode centered on him is "Stray Dog Strut." The rest of his personal journey is dependent on his environment, which includes the Bebop crew.

There are a few characters on my radar that have more than one look (Ana Amari from Overwatch is one of them, for example) but we'll see. Plus, the stories are great, and the main games stories are some of the saddest in gaming history. The gameplay of the series is also good. Also, because you like characters with floppy ears, do I have some good news for you. Me and many other Klonoa fans would greatly appreciate it if you shed some light on the little guy and help the Klonoa franchise come back to the gaming spotlight. Because, as of now, the Klonoa series has been on ice after the Wii remake of the first game. Even the comic was cancelled after shifty look shut down. It feel like everything is trying to keep the Klonoa franchise from returning from the gaming spotlight. The fans really need all the help we can get. Are you willing to help them?

    I always thought he lost his right eye while taking his death. that's why he can only see the past through it. I also always took it that he faked his death after Julia didn't show. in the opening scene of the show he is waiting with roses and it cuts to her dropping rose petals from her window during the green bird scene, while showing him shoot a gun through a bundle of roses. her dropping the rose petals symbolised her acceptance that she could not go to meet him since she had been visited by vicious and threatened. and that even after all of that, after faking his death he still made it back to her place as shown in the green bird scene when he asks her to sing for him "just like that".

    I caught on to Spike and Julia having an affair behind Vicious' back in my first watch of the show. It's the line from Vicious in the flashback in "The Real Folk Blues Part 1" about Julia having betrayed him. The way I look at it, the only possible way Julia could "betray" Vicious would have been by hooking up with his friend.
    Also, I would like to thank you DiGi. I had long intended on watching Cowboy Bebop, but could never seem to get around to it, and it was seeing your videos on the Bebop crew that finally persuaded me to watch the show for the first time.

      Both you and DiGi gave that interpretation because in the english dub they replaced a harsh comment (about Julia) Vicious uses to mock Spike with an harmless and kinda unfitting line. Julia betraying Vicious has way more to do with her disobeying her master (Vicious) and leaving the syndicate. Likely it was Vicious himself who ordered Julia to get close to Spike in order to either spy on him or kill him

    I caught the love triangle sure, but even still I think Julia and Vicious were still pretty under developed and this coming from someone that loves the three of them dearly. I mean all we really know about Vicious's character apart from the syndicate, Spike, and Julia, is that he treated Gren well in the war, all the while actually betraying their whole squadron.

      You know them only as much as you need to in order to see how they are relevant to Spike's story arc. There is a reason why COWBOY BEBOP was the only show on Adult Swim to show the complete end credits sequence for every episode for years. It was a flashback sequence central to the main story.

    Just watched the english dub of Jupiter Jazz part 1 for the first time and now i understand why DiGi gave that interpretation about the relationship between Vicious and Julia: In the english dub of Jupiter Jazz part 1, they replaced Vicious' line "your precious Julia was having sex with everyone" (to which Spike reacts with surprise and distress, "everyone" meaning every man in the Red Dragon) with "Julia was here....right in this town" (to which Spike reacts with surprise and distress for no reason at all). Aren't american anime adaptations the best in the Universe? And no, Vicious and Julia weren't a couple

    • @mookiestewart3776
      @mookiestewart3776 Před 7 lety

      Giovanni Fierenze yes they were, it's made almost painfully obvious in the flashbacks. in fact it even shows vicious and Julia in bed together during one.

    • @giovannifierenze3444
      @giovannifierenze3444 Před 7 lety

      Here's what i can tell you for certain:
      Jupiter Jazz english dub:
      Spike:"Get out of the way, Lin!"
      Vicious (smirking):"Julia was here....Right in this town"
      Spike is shocked.
      Jupiter Jazz italian dub:
      Spike:"Get out of the way,Lin!"
      Vicious (smirking): "Your beautiful Julia let herself get fucked by everyone" (Literal translation of "La tua bella Julia si è fatta sbattere da tutti").
      Spike is shocked.
      I don't speak japanese, so i don't know which dub is the most accurate.
      But considering how Spike's reaction at the notion of his girlfriend passing through the town at some point doesn't make much sense(and considering how often lines like these are changed for censorship reasons), my money is on the italian dub.
      Because of that different line,the english fansites claim Julia was Vicious' fiancee and cheated on him with Spike.
      The italian ones (and also the italian Cowboy Bebop Wikipedia page) claim Julia was possibly his underling with "special benefits", and possibly Vicious himself pushed her into Spike's arms to control and spy on him (Spike being the main obstacle in his path to leadership), not taking into account that she could fall in love and betray him and the organization.
      In the flashback i could see the three being friendly to each other, and Julia sleeping with both. Nothing suggested to me that Vicious had romantic feelings for her at some point, neither in the flashbacks nor in the dialogues.
      No matter which line of the most accurate, i remain of the opinion that Vicious and Julia were a couple in the traditional sense of the term as much as Vicious and Gren were friends.

      Notice how he's completely ignoring the Japanese dub. (Even if you don't speak Japanese, you can read the subtitles at the bottom of the screen.)

    • @tiger-stripedcat7199
      @tiger-stripedcat7199 Před 3 lety

      The English dub is correct. Julia was with Vicious first then Spike. We never see her have other lovers nor does the original Japanese version suggest anything of the sort. In Japanese Vicious says "Julia wa ita, kono machi ni" which means "Julia was here in this town." Whoever made that dub is an idiot. Spike doesn't react with disgust. He's bummed out that Julia was there at some point and he missed her.

    "I'm not going to review Ein. Sorry."
    "I'm not going to talk about the end to Spike's story. Sorry."
    You're totally not sorry, admit it. >_>
    Seriously speaking, I'm so glad you finally made this episode. I love Spike so much - even though he isn't my favorite character from Bebop, he's one of my all-time favorites from anything. I'm not sure if that makes sense to other people, but yeah, I just love him to bits. I love his relationships with other people and how badly he *seems* to handle them when he really knows what he is doing and sees exactly what his actions are doing to them.
    I think your summation of Annie's opinion of Spike pretty much nail's it - he can be a selfish, stubborn prick. Oh, and the lazy bit. I think the relationship he has that was always the most interesting to me was with Vicious, because of the complexities of having been friends and brothers-in-arms and seemingly so close and then being the cause of so much betrayal and pain. It really colors all of their interactions in a very different light, makes it that much more meaningful and kind of difficult to see who is in the right or who is in the wrong between them. I mean, I love Spike, but you have to understand Vicious wanting to get some revenge.
    Spike is a character I both want to smack upside the head and force a giant hug on because he needs them both pretty equally...
    Ahh, I just really think you nailed his character really well. Another excellent video.

    • @giovannifierenze3444
      @giovannifierenze3444 Před 8 lety

      The english dub is misleading; Vicious telling Spike Julia was having sex with everybody in the syndicate was replaced with Vicious telling Spike Julia was in town. Vicious is a male Juri Han; his relationship with Julia is never explained, but i find more plausible she was working for (and having sex with, maybe unwillingly) Vicious while having a relationship with Spike.

    DiGi Valentine Please, in the unlikely future, if Nostalgia Critic decides to review Cowboy Bebop, please agree to guest star in that episode. Let me explain. I know, I am simply POSITIVE that if he'd review this anime, he would try to criticize the characters of Vicious and Julia for the reasons you listed (them being underplayed and all that), but if you're there and slam him with the same explanation you gave us here on WHY it is so underplayed, the I don't know, I just like it when he's proven wrong about something
