I would like to highlight 2 points:
1- The history about India is not first from British. There are other historians like Huang Sang, Ibn Batuta were well narrated about India and its civilization.
2- Orientalism was established by European to study about Islam and its civilization. Later they extended to Indian subcontinent and then far east. The reason for this is the Europe got the light of knowledge from muslim World.
The dark age they mentioned was dark only for Europe. India, China, Muslim world even for some part of Africa were not in dark that time, but that was golden age for other region than Europe.

Dravidian word is found to have been first used by Adi Shankara during one of his debates with Mandana Misra in which he introduces himself as person from Dravida Desa. Dravida simply means peninsula.
If you see the map of India, the Dravida desa starts from around Gujarat southward.
The origin of the human kind in this manvantara was Kumari Khanda south of Kannya kumari. When that khanda (piece) of land spilt into various continents and floated out wards to form what we see the continents of the world.
Shiva the Adi Yogi and Adi Guru composed the first languages of Tamil from which Sanskrit was derived. Sanskrit was popularised as the language of the science due to its more scientific construct. (The entire Sanskrit grammar is codified in the very popular Shiva Sutras / Maheshwara Sutras by Paanini which even today is a mystery on the depth of scientific temperament of those geniuses who lived in India).
After kumari (Shiva’s) consort Sati exploded - cut into pieces and drifted away (refer story of Daksha prajapati), Shiva and his followers moved north and settled in the Himalayas adopting nature (Prakriti- Parvati - daughter of Himalayas) as his consort.
Ravana the great Multi-faceted (ten headed) Aryan King of Sri Lanka was a great Shiva Bhakta and received learning in many art forms music, yoga, dance and science as well as weapons like Chandrahasa from Shiva.
Later when Bharat rose to heights, Sanskrit became a world language.
After Gandhari cursed Krishna and ordered her soldiers to destroy every Yadava, for carrying the sin of destroying her 100 powerful children, under the advise of Sri Krishna, the Yadava clan flee north west crossing the Hindu Kush. As advised by Sri Krishna himself, they were to live disguised, change their culture and habits and even language. That is how they mixed up with the early languages of Latin, Greek, Roman etc., came up and a new culture was setup with a mono theistic religion which believed that their only God was Sri Krishna- the father in heaven. (Sri Krishna had 16008 wives and on an average 9 children in each - needless to say that science of that time had allowed surrogacy and test tube children as can be seen even from the birth of 100 Kauravas, Pandavas as well as his own elder brother Balarama who was moved out into Rohini’s womb from Devaki’s).
YADAVAs were thus came to be known to be YAHDAVs or YAHUDIs or Jews.
However the forces of Gandhara - Khandahar - Afghanistan followed them and even today the fight goes on - as with the Phalestein Hamas and Israel.
Therefore, true Indians were those from the South who moved towards the North and escaped or thru the North West.
Those who moved to the South East towards America (as Red Indians) or those into South West as Africans were also dark complexioned like the people of South India.
India is perhaps the only country that never discriminated people on colour of skin.
You will find a dark skinned Brahmin (educated person) and a fair skinned Shudra (labourer). But yes Indians discriminated against those who weren’t keeping themselves clean and healthy.
Untouchability originated from cleanliness and not from classification of the for Varnas.
The educated definitely had kept cleanliness as the path to societal health.
That may be why if one touched an unclean item or object, bathing from head to toe was prescribed. Even today many temples follow cleanliness with sanctity.
At some point in time perhaps some invaders destroyed the social fabric thru their imposition of unclean ways and thereafter the concept of keeping such people away ultimately gave rise to untouchability. Such people were called mlechhas (meaning those who are attracted to malam - dirty environment - malam ichhati mlechha).

Also, though people often believe that Ramayana was written before Mahabharata, historians believe the reality is the reverse. My view is that, harappans and aryans are entirely different. Harappans after their decline have descended south through west and reached Kerala, srilanka and the like. Then they mixed with traders from Mediterranean and middle east. Aryans came to Kerala and srilanka through east. The indigenous culture of Western indians from Maharashtra to Kerala and srilanka would speak largely about the harappan whereabouts.
