In this Units of History episode we turn to the lore of the mysterious lands of Grand Cathay!
We begin with the foundations of Cathay in the eons before recorded history.
It is here that the Celestial Dragon took an interest in the emerging human clans of the east, uniting them as Emperor and forming a great Empire. We look at the Campaign Map of Cathay to discuss its various provinces and border regions. Then we talk about the defenses of the Great Bastion of Cathay which features both formidable defenses and armies.
Finally we turn to the origins of the Sky-Lanter and Sky-Junk fleet of Grand Cathay. We look at their history, their equipment, and their tactics with a poignant case study of their devastating power at the Siege of the Snake Gate by the army of Nurgle and Tzeentch.

Came out brilliantly once again. Was a bit of a beast this time, but had a lot of fun talking with Andy Hall and working on this video with you. The art team, narration, and your editing was top notch as usual. Looking forward to Nurgle and the future!
Interesting point not brought up, but one would think that in addition to astromancers that accompany the sky fleets, one or two flights of longma riders would also accompany them to provide aerial back up. Don’t know if GW or CA really considered that but oh well.

Good thing ca added depth to Cathay. If it was up to GW we would still be waiting for the next decade or so to see Cathay being fleshed out.

@@vetleelias Naturally. GW is protective of their property. You can not just make things up without their approval. But it shows a fair bit of trust, it seems that they let them develop Cathay to this degree.

Cathy could be used to bring back the Olde Worlde from the Realms of Chaos aka Age of Sigmar.
The Great Wall blocked the End Times and spared the Farr Side of the Worlde. Ind, Nippon, and have the Krugan Hung and Dark Elves as antagonist. Cathy finds a way to reunite the relms back into the Olde Worlde.

I like these. By the time 8th edition rolled around for Fantasy peripheral factions like Cathay, Nipon, Araby, Kislev, and the Moot had all been effectively dropped. They were still canon but their lore was incredibly sporadic and niche. It's nice to see them being recognized again, and that lore being condensed in videos like this.
Every expansion on existing lore is welcomed, it means that the world can still be explored and there's a lot to learn
A lot of people will abused Grand Cathay Sky fleet for you know it’s cheesiness, will end up like 40k.
Cathaty and Kislev are supposed to be getting made into whole armies for Warhammer: The Old World, the WFB reboot. Their Total War armies are supposedly based on the GW concept art and designed in cooperation with GW from what I've seen.
@@1YCARADOFACAO well this sadly isn't an expansion. It's a rewrite to appeal to the Chinese communist party. Cathay actually had quite a lot of lore before, but the way the Empire is based on the HRE it's based on the Ming dynasty. The dragon emperors there are just humans with special powers (like the royarchs of Bretonian) who hold the country together with an iron grip, cultural genocide, Assasination and overwhelming military force. The new focus on harmony is straight out of CCP state TV and couldn't be further from the old lore.

To be clear, not dunking on either one, both approaches are great for me.
At first I was wondering why during K&G's anouncement that they did not include outright warhammer fantasy and 40k content, it was pretty obvious to have them included. Aside from that twin tailed comet there was nothing else. Then I remembered about GW's new copyright act and just chucked it to that as K&G choosing to tiptoe around the subject. Or they just chose to cover the more mainstream subjects. anyways still happy with the anouncement though.

We have plans to roll out more series next year which means it will start to get a bit too cramped for both history and fiction. We will also be considering an "Invicta Lore" type channel

Great video, but is no one gonna talk about how weird it was that Nurgle and Tzeentch TEAMED UP to assault the walls? That right there is a sign of the end times in of itself.

here is another thing. in spite of all of that the place was not prepaired to face off against orks and grimgore ironhide and his tribe along with the united ork tribes under his command made there way to cathy and overwelmed the place. they were not ready for orks. especally when they can go through the desart where the crator is at which destroyed the oger camps so many mellenia back.

This video is sheer perfection. The art, the music, the narration; I can't find a single thing to criticize. Hell, I could listen to this sort of narration about everything to do with Cathay for an hour. Well done!

As soon as I saw the claw extending from the wall with the drop shoots I wondered this as well...
Miao being able to fight 3 Great Unclean Ones at once and win really speaks to her level of strength.
Also interesting points brought up in this vid, potentially two new units that aren’t in the game revealed here, which would be a Dragonflame variant to the Skyjunk and Dragonflame cannon similar to the Flame Cannon used by the Dwarfs.
Also, very glad to see Shi Hong be the first regular human character getting substantial lore for Cathay, expecting at least 2-3 more to show up.

Even Anarion could only take one one of each and I think it was the Great Unclean One that finally brought him down.
I mean he specifically said that she lead the charge of Longma Riders, so she didn't do it alone. Not that it isn't still impressive.
You cannot take this lore too seriously… they made Cathay extremely strong so that its appealing to the chineese market…its barely canon
@@FilipMoncrief It’s entirely canon. There’s an army book for Cathay that they literally made for the upcoming game.
Just can’t wait to play as Zhao Ming of the Western Provinces, also note that at 6:29 The Dragon Emperor resides in the Celestial City above Weijin and at 6:36 The Moon Empress name Quai Yin is prononced "Chuai Yin" the Q in Chinese is pronounced as a C.
I think other Chinese languages are different since Mandarin, Yue-Cantonese, Ming Na, etc all have different pronunciations. Qs are pronounced as ch in Mandarin, but I believe Hokkein-Ming Na spoken in southeastern China and Taiwan pronounces Q as a K or my sounding tone.
Great stuff! Clan Eshin Assassins, Ogre Manesters and Dwarf Slayers are musts for Units of Warhammer! Would love to see those!
I actually think Brettonian Grail Knights are rather interesting as well, and an overview of the armies of the WoC would be pretty cool too. Honestly Warhammer has a lot to go in depth about

@@hamishsewell5990 I never understood why people loved Shaggy ratmen until I read Gotrek and Felix. Thanquol is a thoroughly good character, you get some insights into skaven society, which is rather disgusting, but interesting to explore, and their mentality. Also Thanquol himself isn't just a great character but also just makes every scene he's in quite enjoyable
I think they only do those Videos prior to a release. I think they are not gonna do many unit coverages.

I would absolutely love some sort of series- be it books TV, or otherwise -about the airship competitions mentioned in the video. It sounds like an incredible opportunity for worldbuilding and storytelling. Rival guilds- espionage, politicking, etc- all while competing for the favor of the royal family or other patrons just sounds awesome.
The Wright brothers but oriental themed and with games of throne politics.
Definitely could be a great sub story in a fantasy realm like d&d !

I always hear about how the Sky Junks are bigger than the Sky Lanterns, but they always look roughly the same size, 'cept maybe a bit more cargo space in the Junk's case.
Hope you do the Great Longma Riders, they're hyped up but fare rather poorly in the videos we've seen so far.

I get the promotional material is trying to draw you in with cool, but their lore was honestly starting to seem a bit ridiculously powerful compared to the other factions.

I like this corporation between content creator and company. Like props for actual gameplay and blogs CA but this here has gotten me more hyped to play Cathay that anything you've released on them outside of that banger Miao Ying in engine trailer. Great work on the video as always Invitca and good job CA marketing team for supporting this, it is a good call and I'd love to see more cooperation like this in the future. As a consumer it makes me glad to see that sometimes your marketing is somewhat intelligent
That said you have some very wierd decisions in company that have made me question whether or not to support your company as of late. Leaving games updateless, selling through hype rather then gameplay, starting more projects rather than focusing on making the ones you have work properly, not solving bugs, releasing Troy knowing it's a mess. Well that's just naming a few. But this here, good move, really good move
