      @@seanstapelfeld if that’s the one I think it is I remember definitely being able to one stone hone off of it. A lot of careful work at the end would produce a shaving edge.

      @@DevanJackson definitely has a nice feel when doing the passes… I remember you once telling me how much more convenient larger stones are for honing and today was one of those days I just wanted a big stone but didn’t have one… maybe in the future I’ll get a big coti

      @@seanstapelfeld BTW, don’t wreck yourself trying to get a 300k edge off that stone. That stone was capable of producing a shaving edge for sure but at the same time there’s no procedure to “unlock the secrets of the stone”…
      I remember getting a pleasant 7k-ish result from it doing a 1-stone hone on it.

    I'm sure you've seen this advice before sean , but dont use a diamond plate to level a coti , the garnets get squared and broken (so the theory goes ) use another coti to make your slurry. Nice job 👏 👍

      You're 100% correct Martin! Eric corrected me afterwards haha and he also gave me some advice and the razor is way better now. Are you proud of me? I remember you were the first person to push me over the edge and get a coticule hehe

    I use a spray bottle to get slurry from bottom of lapping plate onto the stone. Don’t waste slurry left on plate.

    Nice video Sean. I haven’t tried a “one stone hone” with my coti yet. Like you mentioned, I set the bevel with a synthetic then go to the coti. I am going to try the one stone method though. Thanks for the video.

      Thank you my friend! I’m impressed, I followed the Cajun blades videos on how he does it and it worked pretty well. He then gave me some pointers and I ended up with a keener edge after revisiting the stone. Glad you enjoyed the video, when will we get your next upload? I’m addicted to watching shaving videos hehe

    Hi Sean. Hope you are doing well. The type of steel you hone seems to make a big difference with these coticules. I have had good results with Sheffield and your typical German steel. Soft steel and an acute bevel angle is ideal for me if I use these stones.

      As Leon said, patience, the key to refinement is slow dilution process, an ass load of laps, especially on water. Well done. Next time, make your slurry with your second best Coti. That has never last me down.

    • @seanstapelfeld
      @seanstapelfeld  Před 27 dny

      @@BigEShaves I have that small coti I can use… I didn’t think about it but that is smart! I shaved with the three razors and the coti definitely shaved but it’s not the keenest coti, the coti edge you send me was keener

    • @BigEShaves
      @BigEShaves Před 27 dny +2

      @@seanstapelfeld if it was keen but not keen enough. It’s not your slurry. It really looked like your bevel was set on point in the video. When it comes to the finish work on a Coti, the magic happens on water, after a methodical dilution. The issue 9 out of 10 times is usually not enough work on water. This is not a synthetic or a jnat. You have to put clean water laps in. It is very hard to read with a running water approach. Thats more of a synthetic honor mindset like Dr Matt.
      Try just water on surface and rinse stone and blade every 10 strokes. Once you have great undercut with light pressure. Make 100 more passes, rinsing every 10. It sounds like a lot but it’s not, it will go fast and it will be worth it. When you master that, you will find out what most people been telling you about coticules is bullshit. There are way more good ones than bad ones. The problems is usually us, not the stone.

    • @seanstapelfeld
      @seanstapelfeld  Před 27 dny

      @@BigEShaves that actually sounds perfect, I’m not interested in cotis for them to be fast, I have synthetics for that. I’ll use a coti for the fun of honing and relaxation so what you just told me makes them even more exciting hehe
