  • Purchased this inexpensively with several problems. It is now functional. At the end, I paired it up with the Yamaha C-50 pre-amp and played some CZcams royalty free music. I was not impressed at the end of the video, but after a few hours of run time and some adjustment to the Bass and treble settings on the pre-amp, it did sound better. But not nearly as good as a vintage amp from the 70's.

Love all the CPVC plastic water pipes right next to your tech bench.

Have to make do with what you have. Limited ceiling space on the other side of the basement due to the furnace piping. Too expensive to heat my garage in the winter, so this is where I work in the winter. Not optimal, but it is what it is.

Hi. I have one GFA 5300 and it still works well.
It is very sensitive to the quality of the preamp and cables.
A good result is the use of a tube preamp, or at least a buffer such as the Musical Fidelity X10. Tube sound transforms an ADCOM GFA 5300 audio system and does not require any additional EQ, but good quality cables should still be used. If you're like rock music, the old Monster Cable M1500 (interconnect and speaker cables ) work really well with this amp.

After I ran it for quite a while, it sounded a lot better. I think that the Yamaha preamp might have sat on a shelf for a very long time and the electrolytics needed to reform again. The amp sounded very tinny originally, but after a few hours of use sounded very good. I'm thinking about tracking down another on eBay that needs repaired to fix and put out in the garage.

The C-50's EQ can be a bit tricky because it is parametric. It can absolutely put out plenty of bass, but you have to select in the 50ish Hz range and make it wide, then level it up.

It did improve after I ran the system for several hours. I don't think that either piece of equipment had been used for a long time. Most likely the preamp needed the capacitors to reform. I don't believe I changed any of them like I did in the power amp. I'll try to change the settings as you suggested and see if there is an improvement.
