    On the money. Slipped L5-S1 2cm in September of 2020. Did PT for a year straight between two different outfits. Made some progress and then stalled doing basic machine assisted resistance training, but still had bad days. Got on Rippetoe's Starting Strength program in earnest winter 2023, found myself back to decent lifts over 100lbs. I have had more lasting benefit / reduction of daily pain from consistent lifting than PT alone, and am on track to squat/DL/bench bodyweight this time next year.

    I am also a physiotherapist and I think that SS is a great way to improve fitness and prevent some diseases.

      My mother is 20kg over weight and highly stressed from being a full time carer. How can I talk her into building muscle mass? I went got a body composition and I have 64kg of muscle and 17% body fat. My goal is get to 66kg in 6 weeks as I think I have muscle memory. I'm hoping it means anxiety drops and productivity goes up in other areas to demonstrate the benefit. I have been looking but not many videos selling increasing muscle mass as buff to disease and for mental health

      @@nikitaw1982 If your mother is very overweight or obese, she should first focus on reducing body fat. To do this, she could consult a dietician and do exercises appropriate to her physical condition, so as not to overload her joints and soft tissue. Once she reaches a healthy percentage of body fat, she can start SS as a preventive measure against loss of muscle and bone mass and to improve strength and fitness. Of course, she could immediately do SS and reduce weight, but then neither building muscle nor losing weight will be as fast and effective.

      @@karolgogolinski3957 I like the idea of selling strength as she seems to see losing fat as impossible. Seeing a dietician seems a good idea but I bet she would spend the hour doing all the talking. If she has to lug around the fat she should at least get strong in the mean time?

      @@nikitaw1982 Of course it's better to have more muscle and be stronger with the same percentage of body fat, regardless of whether you're a man or a woman. Muscle is metabolically active and helps fight metabolic diseases. But it's even better to have the right level of body fat, muscle mass, and strength. Check the concept of metabolic syndrome and see if your mother doesn't have it. Improve one thing but don't ignore another.

    Hey y’all I’m a novice with barbells and am just starting out using the blue and grey books and all the CZcams tutorials. I cannot even get into the squat position y’all teach without having mid back pain even without the bar. I’m guessing it’s a thoracic mobility issue and I’m over extending my low back and causing a bit of a “pinch” but I’m curious what I can do to fix this? Thanks y’all so much

    • @michaellynn9763
      @michaellynn9763 Před 16 dny

      While I absolutely agree with the explanation behind the squat technique, and I do believe this is the way to move the most weight, I personally simply don’t want to do it and continue with my high bar. The pinch you are referring to, which high have been similar to mine, is possible due to back extension/hyperextension. I consciously tried to extend my back in attempt to maintain a stiff position, but as the weight goes up, I found myself extending more and more, and in doing so, possibly trapped a nerve.

    After an injury a GOOD PT can make all the difference but there is a lack of follow up after the initial treatment. SS fills the bill.
