I found a piece of an electronic panel that had fallen off the plane (down near the power plugs/adapters) and showed it to the stewardess who then showed it to a mechanic and he couldn't fix it so they de-boarded the plane and delayed us 4 hours. I was not popular with the rest of my row.

There was one flight I was on, I ended up where the other two people in my row were children. The flight attendant asked, "The two children sitting next to you are unaccompanied minors, in the case of an emergency are you willing to take responsibility for them?"
It was a weird experience, luckily nothing went wrong during the flight, so I did not have to gain experience as a father.

I mean, yeah, a water landing. Not familiar with the Hudson River landing? A plane with 155 people hit a flock of geese, breaking the engines. They couldn't get to an airport in time so they landed relatively gently in the Hudson River and the plane floated long enough for everyone to be picked up by nearby boats.

I remember when my aunt got the emergency exit row. She does not shut up about how she's "the most capable one in the family" and stuff.
It's crazy to me how many people are proud of sitting in the exit row. So you agreed to be a hero in the EXTREMELY UNLIKELY event that something would happen. Unless you actually DO something It's as "heroic" as me saying "sure I'd run into a burning hospital to save the patients, knowing the chance of me ever really having to do that is miniscule

Ugh, flying sounds so overwhelming.
Flying itself not as much as living through the airport hassle, particularly the security theater
Flew from the US to Thailand, twice. It's about a 20 hour flight each way, but it was so worth it, especially with Singapore Air (best airline I've ever flown with). Most domestic flights are pretty short and easy, honestly, but for those international flights, just make sure you give yourself at least two weeks at your destination to make it worth it.
