@@ibinanonym7687 Ah, thank you for your questions! Yes, the video you sent was from the Tubbs Fire in 2017. It burned 36,810 acre and more than 5,643 structures were destroyed. It was one of the most destructive fires in all of California history.
Since this event, most of the homes have been rebuilt!

Hey I’m a local who has lived here my entire life! Thanks for doing the video. I think it would be super awesome if the city would make the downtown area more pedestrian friendly and offer no parking fees for businesses.
Santa Rosa should focus on bringing in more mom and pop restaurants and taverns back to the downtown area and focus on the art community. Bring back the tour to California 🚴 & hand car regatta!!🦹🎉🎭

I agree with you regarding downtown. They have struggled with the reunification of Old Courthouse Square. Businesses located there, especially restaurants, have ebbed and flowed as a result of inconsistent traffic. However, we did take our kids on Halloween to downtown and there were hundreds of families who enjoyed all the activities that were put together. There are signs of progress but it is slower than I think we would all like to see.
How do you think the city can better attract businesses and restaurants to come to the downtown area?
@@MichaelFerl McDonnell Boulevard has always been a favorite for many local folks. I strongly recommend taking your littles there before it gets dark next year for Halloween. Around 4:00pm
We should focus on making our town more of a bicycle community. Years ago It was a lot of fun taking your family downtown to the hand car regatta like going to the carnival back in the 1920s about 8-10 years ago.
Volunteer work! It would be great if locals could offer to host tours and bring people downtown to the places like our rural cemetery (did you know there’s nightly tours around the holidays of the graveyards?) where people dress up in character from the pioneer days?
We should explore the history of the botanist that were here over 100 years ago.
Volunteer work and tours to Annadel State Park. And focus on all the families in the area.
This community has thrived on generations of people who have been here for 100’s of years and it’s sad to see that moving away.
In elementary school there were always field trips to the missions around Sonoma and Petaluma. You couldn’t get through middle school without going to Jack London state park.
If there’s not too many restrictions or needs of a permits we would all have a great time restoring our community. showcasing all the germs there is to offer like state parks, redwoods and orchards.

Unfortunately our economy won’t support the mom and pop establishments. People would rather shop at amazon and eat dollar hot dogs at Costco. Doesn’t support the local small business, it just drives them out.

When you can buy a pair of shoes from the convenience of your living room, for less money, and have them delivered to your doorstep the next day for free, that is significant value proposition that web based retailers offer.
Knowing this, how can local retailers and small businesses offer a unique value proposition that consumers won't receive when purchasing online? For example, Stark restaurants provides an experience of a great venue, service, and food that you can only experience in person.
Downtown Santa Rosa has several parking garages and I have never had a problem finding a parking spot.
However people there like to whine when they can't park in the street directly in front of the place they are going
Moved to Santa rosa 20 years ago. Not 1 single homeless person. Now they're everywhere. Expensive to live here and now its a mini Oakland. Garbage Town now

What are the bus/other public transportation systems like in Santa Rosa currently? I don't enjoy driving in general tbh, so if it's good enough or if the city is thinking about improving it then I might consider living there in the future

I’m a 1967 Montgomery HS grad. Loved Santa Rosa in the 60’s. Moved back to Seattle soon after graduation and never returned. Lived in Rincon Valley.

Have you had the opportunity to return to Santa Rosa since leaving after you graduated? How has your experience been living in Seattle?
We have lived in Windsor since 1990. The homeless have taken advantage of the free services. Who pays? I do. Tax payers do. 45% of all homeless come to California for free stuff. ie: an interview of a homeless person. He was asked why did you come here? For the free shit. I can purchase drugs and sell them. I can shoot up in the streets and nothing happens to me. It all free.
You mention fire risks. Since we have been living here since 1990, we have never had any major fires until 2017. Yes, there are issues. And these issues are given to the homeless. As long as we give them free stuff, then why should they leave. The weather is good not like the mid west where it snows. They chose to come because they can get away with criminal activities. ie: SF, a cesspool of criminal activities in the city. The golden state has turned into a turd-world state.

It is a misconception that a majority of the homeless population are coming from out of state. According to Sonoma County Homeless Census and Survey, 88% have lived in the area for at least 10 years.
Some other interesting stats from the 2022 census: 9% are veterans, 67% are white, 19% are employed, 37% are looking for work, 24% had experienced domestic violence, 24% don't want government assistance, 42% have a disabling condition, and the total homeless population used to be significantly higher (2011 - 4,539 vs 2022 - 2,893).
Ultimately, we all want to reduce/stop homelessness, including those that are homeless. It was around 40 degrees this morning, I don't know anyone that would want to sleep in a cardboard box on a street corner in Santa Rosa.
So the question we all should be focusing on, what is the solution?

To clarify your thought:
If Sonoma County stopped providing or significantly reduced support (shelter, medical, mental health, etc.) and held transients responsible for breaking the law (drug possession for example), this would significantly reduce and/or eliminate homelessness in Sonoma County? How would the homeless population respond?
At least they have sidewalks. I just moved to Georgetown Texas to be closer to my grandchildren from Santa Rosa in and out of there my whole life I’ll be coming back there’s no sidewalks here and everything so spread out it’s crazy. I miss it in Santa Rosa and I would say this to anybody that’s been there a long time with complaints unless you’ve been somewhere else and found out that it’s a lot worse, like I have when I get back and I walk down the sidewalk, I will never complain
That is great feedback! Many people complain about California but don't acknowledge that other states have problems as well. We often don't realize how good we have it until it's gone.
The worst thing about the traffic is stupid left hand turn arrows. maybe two or three are needed in very few areas but mostly we sit around polluting the air in the area. non-point pollution source.
I worked at the Keysight/Agilent, (Old Hewlett-Packard), Manufacturing Complex up on Fountaingrove Parkway, Santa Rosa, Ca. That Jobsite is nearly a square mile in size and has employed 3,000 people at different times. The Fountaingrove Parkway area is First Class and not cheap! We couldn't afford to buy a house in Santa Rosa so we found an awesome house in Hidden Valley Lake, CA, 35 miles Northeast for about half price of Santa Rosa homes and now retired we still live here.
I've lived in Santa Rosa all my life and love it. The weather is great. The traffic is always terrible. Not just during commute time. People drive crazy and are always on their cell phones, not paying attention. Yes, there are lots of homeless but they have never bothered me and I even give them blankets when I can. I live in rural southwest Santa Rosa and love it. Only a few minutes to town. If I could live anywhere in Sonoma County it would be Rincon Valley. People there are so nice, drive nice and it's a different vibe there. Thanks for a great video. Well done.

@@MichaelFerl Southwest Santa Rosa. Close to Rohnert Park which has lower sales tax so I shop there when I have big purchases.

Fulton Rd. What a horrible pothole ridden nightmare that is. Can't wait till the widening is complete and it's resurfaced. It's been awful living in an area where I basically have to take other stretch of road infront of Piner highschool every day.

Hi. I live in Larkfield, having bought a home recently that is a rebuild from the big fire. I agree with you on so many points here. I know you need to keep your video concise but the problems you mention have deep rooted mistakes that have sullied a once beautifully run town. Also, I've lived here off and on since 1979. Crime and in particular homicides are the highest they have ever been.Please keep up the good work. I subscribed.😀

Yes, this is a good point. Crime and homicides have increased but still remain low comparatively to similar size cities. Santa Rosa had a total of 6 homicides in 2021, this year there has been 9. Throughout the U.S., homicides have been increasing. Last year, it increased by 4.3%. Hopefully, Santa Rosa and Sonoma County will work on getting this number back down.

Ummmmm…. We just three days ago had our second murder. Every murder is horrible but two murders in a town of 178,000 people is not what I call a high murder. I have lived here my entire life. 54 years. I owned or worked at downtown restaurants on third or fourth Street for 27 years. I never experienced any sort of violent crime. 🌺
I’ve been in Santa Rosa for 7 years I came from the east coast most people don’t understand this place is piece of heaven compared to some east coast city’s Im on my 3rd home here and have made a great life for me and my family here would never leave or move from here this will be my forever city

Context is key. We had some clients move out of California and didn't realize what they were giving up until they spent time out of the area. They ended up moving back after 1.5 years. The fact is, if there was a city that offered everything that Sonoma County does with none of the negatives (cost of living, homeless, fires, etc.) everyone would be living there.

Having lived in Santa Rosa for just over 10 years in the 1990’s, I love your honesty. Like any city, there is good areas and down right “avoid” areas. I feel you described Santa Rosa really accurately and was honest about it. I work here in Santa Rosa now and chose to buy our home in Cloverdale in 2001, 36 miles North of Santa Rosa, to better fit our small town mind set. Santa Rosa is overall a wonderful city who’s doing their best to make a better & safer place for people to live and thrive with their families.

Where did you relocate to after living in Santa Rosa?
We lived in Petaluma for the last 8 years or so and just moved back into Santa Rosa into an affordable housing complex. The area that we’re in is horrible but paying what we’re paying for a 2 bed, you can’t beat it. Rents and homes for sale in this county are just ridiculous! My family and I will
Never be able to buy here. We possibly will plan on moving out of state in the next few years.

@@MichaelFerl hello Michael, forgot to say thanks for the video. 😉 so did get lucky and got into affordable housing, I’m noticing alot of them are popping up which is good… I actually grew up in Hidden Valley Lake, the drive there is super far. Very nice up there tho. I’m actually hoping one day to move out of the country. It’s sad cause Sonoma county has so much to offer, if only there was rent control and if the county would help out more regarding homeless. It’s a big issue the part I live by. It’s very sad.

It has been my experience that there are a lot of assumptions made about homeless people and as a society, we tend to dehumanize them. In this process, we fundamentally compound the issue because we don't look at them as human beings but rather as disposable objects that burden our lives. Conversely, we tend to sweep them under the rug instead of working together to develop long term solutions to help rehabilitate these individuals back into our society.
As you pointed out, it is nearly impossible to do any of those things with out some of the basic fundamentals, such as housing.
More taxpayer funded housing is not the answer
@@justinwells8265 … did you respond to the wrong comment? All I said was that we should support new building projects and affordable housing. The “not in my backyard” and “there’s too much traffic already” crowds are bad for business and bad for people.
@@tycry5525 no, I just don’t think dumping more of my taxes into so called affordable housing is going to solve the problem. I do think it sucks that people can’t afford to live here but the solution is for those people to seek an affordable area to live in even if that means leaving the area like I am. The housing shortage here is intentionally perpetuated to keep values artificially high and to keep people dependent on government. Anything our government touches, gets worse. Government needs to get out of the way. So I’m not saying don’t build, just don’t want my taxes subsidizing it….
@@justinwells8265, I wish more of my Sonoma county taxes went into education - because you clearly can’t read. Not once have I asked for our taxes to pay for affordable housing. Why do you keep bringing it up?
It’s so funny, because you understand the problem, but you’re blaming the wrong people and causes. Government isn’t the problem here. Stagnating wages, entitled boomers doing everything to inflate housing prices and limit new construction, and corporate greed are to blame. 1 in 7 homes in America was purchased by Wall Street, corporations, last year! How many Sonoma county properties would open up if we got rid of AirBnB?

Yes 😄 I used it as an extreme example because there are several individuals the communicated that all of Santa Rosa is a terrible place to live. There are many other neighborhoods through Santa Rosa though, that isn't 55+, that is also safe and highly desirable such as: Proctor Terrace, Sky Hawk, Bennett Valley, Rincon Valley, Hidden Valley, Fountaingrove, Saddlebrook, etc.
Do you live in Santa Rosa? If so, what are are you in?
One more negative, as seniors there are no advantages for us like in Marin co. Where we located from (mistake). We didn’t have to pay for school bonds, libraries, etc. no local tax advantages for us elderly . It’s not a welcoming county for seniors. We paid into all these things while we were young and now we’re being asked to pay when we’re on fixed incomes . We paid for school children all our lives, enough is enough !

I lived in Eugene, Oregon for 25 years and now live in Santa Rosa. Both cities are almost identical in size, but Eugene has much better infrastructure and freeway systems.

I haven't spent much time in Eugene but understand that it has experienced more rapid growth than Santa Rosa over the last 10-20 years. As a result, I'm curious if the infrastructure is newer compared to Santa Rosa.

Cool I lived in Corvallis and am visiting Santa Rosa. Seems like here people talk about the homeless population like they're a problem whereas in Corvallis it felt like they were treated just as some of the locals. Corvallis is a bit smaller, though

I think you bring up an important point. It is my impression that many have dehumanized and devalued the lives of those that are homeless because they are collectively viewed as a burden on society. Conversely, they are looked at more as things that are simply negatively impacting the city.
Why do think the people of Corvallis treat these individuals differently compared to Santa Rosa?
We pay an extra gas tax to expand the freeway from 2 lanes to 3. After almost 15 years of nightmarish construction traffic. It's almost done. Then everyone will whine and cry for a 4th lane. Probably causing another 15 years of nightmarish traffic

Been in Santa Rosa most of my life.
The scenery is great, city is nice but it has its bad parts. Downtown Santa Rosa has many homeless, the vineyards takes all the natural land away. But again, every city has its flaws.

Yes, it does seem like Santa Rosa has struggled with the downtown area. Not only with homelessness but in addition, businesses have open and closed, and it hasn't had the same success of unifying the city in the same way the Town Green in Windsor and The Square in Healdsburg has been able to accomplish.

Homelessness is everywhere, not just Santa Rosa.

@@MichaelFerl I live in Novato. Homelessness and it's associated crime has exploded here in the past three years. One of the tenants here was murdered in January 2022 right after I moved back here from Portland - which is a hundred times worse!

Yikes! Yes, rental rates have increased. Since interest rates went up, more people turned to renting instead of buying which drove up rents.
Have you considered buying instead of renting?
I've lived in Santa Rosa my entire life. Well there are a few times I've moved out of town but really I've literally lived in Sonoma County my whole life. I lived in Rohnert Park a total of 7 months of my life I lived in Sebastopol for a year and a half and I lived in Windsor for 4 years, but for the rest of my life I've lived in Santa Rosa. Born and raised here and currently living here. Although I've moved around a lot in the area because yeah it is expensive and well part of it also had to do with moving away from my ex but my wife and I are happy in whatever considered affordable housing apartments even though the rent at them would be considered high almost anywhere else. Santa Rosa definitely has issues but primarily at least in my opinion it's all the homeless people and cost of living. And yeah I guess there is not much of a sense of community but my introvert self doesn't really care about that. Santa Rosa the beautiful place a lot of opportunities and is great overall but obviously has its problems.
My oldest brother had been trying to convince me and my mom to move to Idaho as he had moved there with his wife and son years ago. They're in the treasure valley area in Nampa near Boise. Mom eventually did move there but I'm still here in Santa Rosa cuz my wife doesn't want to move there although to be honest I don't think I would have liked it up in Idaho anyways. Sure it's way cheaper but unless you've been living there for a number of years, they really hate Californians there and plus it gets really cold up there during winter

And I have looked it up and yes Santa Rosa is more affordable than Petaluma and sonoma. I guess it's more affordable than Healdsburg but I honestly don't know on that one. But yeah Santa Rosa's the best cuz there's a lot more to do in Santa Rosa and it's just a much more fun city. I mean where I live in Santa Rosa it's a pretty short drive to get the epicenter. There is always a compromise to everything. If someone doesn't want to contend with some of the issues that Santa Rosa has, they could live in Sebastopol or Healdsburg but it will cost $200,000 - $300,000 more. Many areas of Rohnert Park have even become more expensive than Santa Rosa, University District is a perfect example of this.
While Santa Rosa is far from perfect, for the price range relative to other cities in Sonoma County, it is hard to beat in terms of value.

I agree. The costs of living in CA continue to increase. It is important to note that increases in our PG&E bills are not tied to funding projects like housing or road conditions. Taxes definitely are though and as you noted and these have continued to increase.
There is definitely a balance of being able to address the primary concerns of the general public while also ensuring our cost of living does not increase too significantly.

lived here my entire life on the lower income side, santa rosa is not the kind of place for anyone who's trying to start a life who is not connected in some way to industries in the area. unless you are able to afford going to college for a specific degree or training without having to worry about rent or work, you are going to be struggling growing up here. There is very limited opportunity for well paying jobs and if you are a single person looking for an apartment you are unlikely to find any that you will be able to afford beyond living paycheck to paycheck. this is mostly an issue I'm making a note of for people who intend to raise families here. there is very little to offer younger people here in general unfortunately.

I've been in Santa Rosa in 1972. There was 32000 people. There were no side shows. I now live in Bennet valley. There are side shows. Once they redid courthouse square, I don't go downtown Santa Rosa. Anymore when they did fountain Grove. They ran out all the wildlife, so there's no more wildlife in my neighborhood. I used to live up by Highland drive. Now there's just too many people and they all drive like c*** On Safeway, ran all the good. Stores out of business. Now we're stuck with crappy safeway

I’ve lived in Sonoma County all my life 60 some years. This guy is on.
The only twist I would give is that like other California cities, the homeless are the new pound puppies. Neglect other things for a problem that is government made. They are taking funds from the roads, from emergency services from other taxpayer benefits. They have spent millions on buying housing medical and other social programs that are only attracted more out of city and out of state druggies. If I treated a dog like the state of California treats, the homeless they would lock me up.

One would be to continue securing houses for the truly needy. They are doing that now, and the reason for tense cities is that they don’t allow drugs, and the housing. Truly homeless I need a hand out are exposing the druggies which keep them on the streets.
Secondly, is to enforce the laws already on the books that makes it illegal to live in such a way as to be a health risk for all of the community. The government agencies locally get money from hard-working citizens for each homeless on the streets. If we did this to our animals, the state would lock us away. But because of their greed Greed, they will treat human beings better than cockroaches.
You’re in real estate, do you see any tent cities near fountain Grove or other wealthy communities? For some reason, the cities not worried about lawsuits from people they displace from those areas. Keep up your good videos have a great holiday season.

I actually rented a can and bought a canna gas. I wanna be told pull over here buddy I don’t need your gas. One of those hard-working people that just needed a hand up. I had a city worker. Tell me he was called away from his house with his supervisor with their million dollar machine to go clean up a bucket of poop on the street. The homeless were shut down in Santa Rosa finally under the overpasses because they were exposing themselves to little school girls. Probably why you don’t see tent cities of these poor, hard-working people that just can’t make it living Nancy Pelosi’s neighborhood or in fountain Grove here.
We are running out of space at our city and county facilities for garbage. Much of that garbage is brand new sleeping bags, jackets, other clothing, mixed in with the rotten food that he hast druggies hoard. And cherry on the cake is that the state allows violent and mentally retarded persons to live lower than the rats along with those with mental issues. God help us.

We live just north of SR and have noticed in the last year alone, we now hear gun fire in the distance in the evenings, and street racing/ side show activity over towards the airport at least two to three times a week. We have been following the sheriffs site online and reading about huge drugs busts of convicted fellons and then read they get released on tiny bails because of leftists DA’s who are allowing criminals back on the streets. Things are getting worse here and it is truly sad. As a native Californian it's hard to watch things go down hill... We try to vote to make a difference... But nothing changes for the better, just keeps getting worse.

Also, we have had some clients move up to Hidden Valley Lake and/or Cobb in Lake County to get significantly more bang for their buck. If you can work remote, that is a great option. Otherwise, if you have to commute, that is a long drive...
Born and raised here, 33 now and I wouldn’t count on it getting better. Would not recommend moving here unless you like rampant homelessness and drug use and the rise in crime that brings. I understand this guy is trying to sell houses here but I would not raise my family here so after 33 years, I am loading up a uhaul and I’ll be one less taxpayer in California. Aside from trivial things like good weather nice scenery, I don’t see any good reason to stay.

Northeast Santa Rosa was hit really hard by the Tubbs fire. I wouldn't want to live there, or anywhere east of Annadell park.
Some would argue that the areas that have been impacted by fire are now the lowest fire risk because there is no more natural vegetation left to burn.

I'm out in Rincon Valley been here for the last 3 major fires only had to evacuate for one and there was really no threat... the last time fountain Grove bribed was over 30 years ago..

I’ve noticed new residents from out of state moving in and illadvisedly putting lawns in and making other problematic flora changes like not understanding the life cycles of certain trees and putting them in problematic places
and not understanding where tree roots will look for water (your sewage pipes)

Thank you for that feedback! There are definitely parts of South Park that are better than others. There have been a few sideshows directly on Aston Ave (we have clients that bought a home on Aston Circle), the parking in those areas can be incredibly challenging, and there is a fair amount of drug activity and homelessness at Martin Luther King Jr. Park on Hendley Street.
I think that if you are located more in the heart of South Park, and not directly on Aston or Hendley, it tends to better. If someone is looking to buy a single family home under $600,000, this is one of the few places in Santa Rosa that they would potentially be able to find one.

So, we have a nicely paved road, but it has a tendency to incentivize problematic commuter and racer traffic because adjoining main roads have pot holes and traffic lights, and adjoining residential roads have speed bumps
The sporadic fast traffic becomes a death trap during the day when new young resident families aren’t controlling their kids and pets properly
and lulled into the false sense of security of an otherwise ‘quiet neighborhood’

Over priced, I lived in Santa Rosa for 22 years. I bought a house up north for 300k on half acre with solar panels and a hot tub. I commute to work to Santa Rosa every day.

Where did you end up moving to?
1.the rent is too high, 2. it's too far away from the bay area, 3. the traffic is very bad, 4. the musicians are egotistical and lack talent, 5.the wages are way too low for the cost of living, 6. too many thieves 7. the women are overly selective and greedy.

Thank you for sharing! There are definitely roads that are in need of repair. Sonoma County has spent approximately $40 million in improving road conditions in 2022. In the last 10 years, they have paved almost 30% of all county roads.
However, out of 9 Bay Area counties, Sonoma County and Napa tied for the lowest pavement condition score of 55 out of 100.
It is important to note that roads located within county lines are not responsible by the city and visa versa. There are many areas outside the city limits of Santa Rosa with poor road conditions but the city of Santa Rosa typically takes the brunt of blame when they are not responsible for maintaining these areas, the county is.

@@MichaelFerl I live in Coffee Park. And the roads I’m speaking of are all in the city of Santa Rosa. This includes major streets like College Ave, Hopper , Cleveland Ave, 3rd and 4th st, , Corby , Montgomery, nearly all the freeway overpasses too.I can’t believe the city has spent $40 million . I heard it was more like 5 million that actually was allocated for road repair. The problem is you can’t just fill a few out holes and deviate the road repaired. That just creates a new bump on the street surface . The roads need to be repaved. Ft Collins, CO g FG or example re-paves their main roads every 5 - 10 years depending on the conditions. Super smooth driving that outs Santa Rosa streets to shame!

Sonoma County spent $40,000 million on county roads. They had actually fully repaved 30% of all county roads over the past 10 years.
There is good news on the horizon in regards the roads conditions in regards to Santa Rosa: They are planning repairs to 33 miles of residential streets over the next 2 years.
Additionally, City Council approved funding from $11 to $15.5 million towards pavement maintenance. This will definitely not be enough to address all 512 miles of residential road networks in Santa Rosa, but it will be a step in the right direction.

I don’t trust SR city council. They claim allocations of $$millions towards road paving/repair in the past but they always fall way short of the dollar amount they promised to tax payers. I’ve lived here over 20 years and the roads are in worse condition overall then when I first moved here. Not only that, as a tubbs fire victim, the SR city council and Sonoma County “promised”that our property tax would NOT increase on our rebuilt homes even if the rebuilt home went up in value ,as long as we rebuilt at the same location and limited any new room additions to less than 500 sq. Ft .
This year we got notice that our property taxes nearly doubled!!
We added only 375 sq ft. .Had we been told there would be doubling of property tax in 5 years time , we would have used our insurance money to rebuild in another county or state.
Santa Rosa is a beautiful location , but our elected officials need to find another line of work when it comes to basic infrastructure. For example, they repaved a small portion of highway 12 near the flamingo hotel a couple of years ago. The rest of 12 is in horrible condition..Take drive down Hopper , the main st into Coffey park, the road is in pathetic condition!
SR and Sonoma county’s council members collective incompetence, hood winking, and false promises on several occasions was and is staggering …especially to us fire victims. And while lying about the amount of money allocations towards repaving is pretty typical, the doubling of property tax to fire victims ( who did not want ,but were forced to rebuild after losing our homes in that terrible fire disaster) is absolutely criminal. Had we fire victims not had families who didn’t want to pull their kids out of school and uproot their lives to another county or state , SR population would have definitely decreased .
