The song, in my perspective, is about how we sometimes dream of a life or a world we want to live in or experience and how that brings us far apart from the real world. The protagonist is infactuated with the white haired girl and the world she comes from, and is slowly being consumed by it ( like how his hair changes from red to white at the end). He is dreaming of a life he wants to live in his imagination while living the actual life emptily, without having any purpose in the real world.
This is something normal in our lives too. We always imagine a life we want to live and almost die in the present. Thus the titular "living idly and dying as if dreaming".

“i fell in love in a world that no one knows of, going towards the story of that day i wished for”, i think it resumes a recurring topic of his lyrics. he’s often talked about locking himself up in his own “space”, either for avoiding not to get hurt in the real world or because he struggles to fully live life and be present in the moment (this song is literally about living life as if dreaming). tho he’s unable to experiment strong emotions in the real world, his dream gives him what he’s lacking (therefore falling in love in/with a world unknown to others). either way he always shows hope for the future, therefore waiting for the day he’ll finally be able to live fully even outside of his dream - a dream he created to compensate all the things he’s missing. i recall another song of his going “the best day is waiting for me” and many other verses along these lines. and in this video too, it’s clear that living in a dream is also comforting cause it allows him to be the protagonist of his own world, which he’s unable to traspose in the real one. this is another recurring topic of his lyrics (ambivalent: “when i was a kid i used to picture myself as the protagonist of this world; i started to get embarrassed so i turned my eyes away”, but he still fulfills his wish in his dreamlike-world). aaa i’m sorry this sounds like a mess i just really love his songs and the way they still intertwine with each other even after all these years.

I keep coming back to this. It's the only thing that's really spoken to me in a long time. It feels like someone actually understands how I feel about wishing to live in fantasy worlds my mind has created but being apprehensive about staying stuck in daydreams and maybe not really "living". It also speaks to me about how I am afraid to share my fantasy worlds through my art due to fear of them not being understood or good enough. So I stay stuck in my mind and live "idly dying". This is how I interpret the song : Fall in love with the world inside his head (dream) & knowing that it isn’t real. Always go to his world as a coping mechanism. Sometimes can’t even tell what’s the reality anymore. So he just keep his head and live this life apathetically, contemplating whether he should give up or not (whether it is giving up his dream or his life). Or maybe that’s just what I feel when I listen to this song

3:14 captivated by this mirage, you are to the extent of being dazzling - i interpret this as him portraying himself as a hero in his imaginary world. maybe its tying back to the earlier lines seemingly dazzling people, even though its not real hes telling himself hes just as good.
the last line going towards the story of that day i wished for - this is a bit of a stretch but maybe he lost someone close to him and in his world hes telling a story where they had a different ending? since there was also a flash of who im assuming is that person that he lost. or something along those lines
edit: 1:24 lets vow to reunite, i dont want to look at just me in this moment - you can see someone in the meadow, presumably the same one mentioned in the last line. not sure what the i dont want to part means though. might be he doesnt want to be alone in his imaginary world

I think what really makes this a good track is the flow of Eve's lyrics and the song's sense of progression. He uses a lot of different ways to make his singing interesting, almost like a rapper, like speeding up or dragging words (hotto shita-- kanshouteki ni nareba 0:49), using same sounding words (sainou nai nounai tonaeyo shisutaazu 1:13), singing them monotonously (sasatta mama no kokoro no kizuato 2:35 -that's also five syllables with 'a' followed by five syllables with 'o', a two-syllable split with 'kizu' followed by another 'a' and 'o', which puts extra emphasis on the last word. Really clever!-), or switching up the delivery of the ending of similar verses (odoru koto o yamenaide 1:52 vs furiochiru namida wa misenaide 2:56) to change their impact. On top of that he actually *rhymes* ! In a Japanese *song* !
All of this keeps the song fresh and interesting even if you listen to it a lot of times. That is emphasized by the song's structure not following that of typical pop songs and it's groovy, tribal-esque beat. There is a huge amount of very specific similarities throughout the song to give it cohesion* but some parts only occur once -like the first verse or the titular verse-, while other aspects carry over into other parts or continue to change slightly.
That's what makes this song cool for me. It also makes it crazy fun to sing.
*To give examples:
-The verses that start with 'hotto shita', 'koi o shita', 'hatto shita', 'koi o shita'.
-The last example I gave above 1:52 vs 2:56.
>Those two verses also start with mirroring lines: 'Me o awasete kurenai you de meimei' / 'Me mo aterarenai kuramu you na meimei'. The 'meimei' in both have different meanings too. Eve is using a particular characteristic of the Japanese language to his advantage in his writing style. A lot of the same words have different meaning, a consequence of a language consisting solely of syllables. I love that kind of stuff with mirroring lines btw. Listen to Nujabes' Luv (sic.)pt3 (Featuring Shing02).

The Art. It looks so real and has this beautiful ambience to it. Every scene looks like it’s been dripped in gold. The animation is unbelievably smooth and detailed. From lighting to colors, to the fluidity. The music accompanies it perfectly. Like what the sky would feel like if I could grab it, silky and light. So much heart went into this.
Truly an astounding work of animation.
