I feel like the undertone of SA was pretty spot on and that her mom may not have even known about it since she seemed slightly abusive herself (or maybe she did know, I'm just hopeful). Also, the story she was creating was coming from (supposedly) a younger version of herself, which she might have been suppressing for a long time and the passing of her mother triggered that inner child and the need to be known and heard for the atrocity that happened to her at that age. But since it was a highly traumatic event, it came out in her work and the source was 'outside' of herself (little her) so she didn't have to fully face that suppressed trauma. Lastly, I feel that the 'Ashman' eating her face at the end was her trauma consuming what was left of her after she had been broken down. These are just thoughts that I felt about the movie, idk if it's at all what they intended.
I like the idea of the ash man also being another side of the main character. I made the assumption that he personified something or someone else but that makes a lot more sense
