  • In 2010, Halo took an interesting detour...into anime. Seven shorts were created by Japanese studios all set in the Halo universe and put together in a collection called Halo Legends. Some were good, some were bad. All I'm going to talk about right now.
    This took way too long and could have been better but its the end of the year and I am tired.

      The weeabooness goes all the way to the core with bungie, from the obvious influence on the general vibe of unsc equipment, to basically all early halo concept art (seriously, all the human concept art is just straight up anime, its great) to the fact they're literally the developers of the game Oni, which you should google

    • @Ezekiel_Allium
      @Ezekiel_Allium Před 2 lety +29

      @Spaceman Mort oh, there's definitely a lot of James Cameron influence there, I won't deny that. But the influence of series like ghost in the shell is also there. This is a very weird pull, but the machinegun from halo 2 is where I think the 80s anime influence is most blatant, to the point it looks out of place for the halo universe.
      I will also say though, the pulse rifle point is a little silly. The only real influence is the ammo counter and smg esquefire rate combined with no recoil. They share similar aesthetics because they're pulling from the same source: late cold war era weapons. Check out the early l85 rifles for what I'd consider a much closer aesthetic relative to the ma5, not just in terms of being bullpup but the complex sides of unknown purpose (to me at least). I'd say the smg has more pulse rifle influence honestly, with the mix of polymer and metal furniture, caseless ammo etc
      There was actually a line about the incestuous design stealing between Cameron and halo in my first comment I cut to shorten it

    After I watched The Babysitter, Cali-141 became my favourite Spartan. Her sheer altruism and Kindness stuck with me a lot. While there’s a lot of heroes who sacrifice themselves for their loved ones, very few are willing to go above and beyond and sacrifice themselves for someone who’s generally been rude to them, and pushed back against their acts of kindness. What I really found heroic about Cali was that while she had almost every reason to save herself and leave Obrien for dead, (She was way more talented, way more valuable to the UNSC, and O’brien hadn’t really done anything to earn Cali’s kindness). She still chose to sacrifice her life for his. To Cali, she didn’t care if O’brien was “nice” to her, she just saw another human who had just as much reason to live as her. It’s a trait that I really wish I had. To not just care about those who like you, but go above to care about those may not.

    Ghost was Sakumo Hatake (Kakashi's dad) in a bad ending, basically.
    He was purposefully cold to everyone and ignored the safety of his men to accomplish his mission, hoping it would carry them through everything, but that got them all killed. He just kinda kills his emotions entirely and becomes a shadow of himself, a "ghost". People just saw him seemingly not care and called him Ghost like an insult, and he took it on since it kinda lined up with how he had seen himself since the incident anyways. 10/10, alongside Homecoming. HRUNTING: Most known for the Cyclops (Halo Wars and other media)
    YGGDRASIL: Made to take Mjolnir and develop uses for non-spartans and further mjolnir development itself
    HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Mark I ADS: The prototype suit, a version is used by Sgt. Johnson in several non-canon appearances
    The Mantis, Mega-Mantis, and Colossus all came from the combined HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL projects later
    The Heart of Midlothian is name dropped. It was responding to the battle when it was ambushed leading to "Midnight in the Heart of Midloathian"
    Part of the battle is where Atriox finally is ordered to be executed, rises up, and creates the Banished which are now the main antagonists of the series

    I really love Halo legends, we really need more animated media like it/the Evolution motion comics. Origins, Babysitter, Homecoming, and Prototype are my favorites.. Also, as a Mesoamerican history nerd, I must pedantically point out that the shots from Origins showing Teotihuacan's Sun Pyramid and El Caracol's observatory at 2:42 to 2:46 suffers from a lot of the issues most media has featuring Mesoamerican cities/architecture, where they just assume how the ruins look today is how those structures always looked. The worn down masonry seen today, used to be covered in finer brick, smooth stucco, and then paint with reliefs, sculptures, etc. The Sun Pyramid for example had a giant facade of massive sculptures of jaguars and human hearts and fire motifs on the flat vertical panels on the pyramid (the Adosada/Tablero sections), much like the actually intact today facade on the Feathered Serpent pyramid (albiet that has feathered serpent, crocodile, and water motifs)

    I always looked at the ghost epitaph like how lots of people look at being human, the whole point of the short; there's no one correct answer, only the one we make for ourselves. Ghost chose to be a "ghost" until he made that sacrifice, because he believed he could only be "human" if he was able to protect the soldiers he was in charge of. The ghost title originally being from others, but one that he felt he had to bear because he didn't deserve to be human.

    In the episode prototype I found the ambiguity of how he got his nickname very good. In the military some people are given nicknames and they are used to the point that their actual name is forgotten. Now when the people that gave the nickname transfer or get killed in war sometimes the nickname sticks and those coming after might not know why it was given then they get curious and start asking the question and if the bearer of the name is tight lipped then they will come up with their own reasons for the name which can range from comical to maliciously clinical. Here is another reason he might be named ghost being part of a sniper team or an advanced recon force and never getting detected. The reasons we hear in the episode are cynical because an entire squad was killed and he was exceedingly stoic about it or just numbed to all the death.

    I've been saying that Chief is so attached to Cortana, because he has mommy issues, over being abused by Halsey as a child.
    She is almost the manifestation of an Oedipus complex for chief.
    I'm glad someone else sees it the same way, and I'm not just crazy.

    • @turtlechief2169
      @turtlechief2169 Před 2 lety +6

      tbf, we never see the Chief admit to intimate feelings, could just see her as a very close friend, in halo 3, 4, 5 and infinite, we always get to know Cortana's feelings but not his.
      I think this was a purpose built mystery, if you focus on on view or the other, it's not hard to see it as either a strong friendship, or something more. But hey, thats my take.

    I always thought Ghost was cold the whole time (even before his loss) but he got the name after his entire platoon was wiped out. Because even when it was wiped out, he showed no emotion at such a colossal loss. Thus he was called Ghost because he was unfeeling and nothing affected him. When he said the words to detonate the Prototype, that was when he regained his humanity and he was able to "Be Human".
