  • With all the failures of the previous Changesun Electric Ducted Fans (which had the wrong specs advertised) caused all the headaches and failures. I was about to give up due to a lot of the expense and time it took to modify this Rare Byron F-16. I was about to go back to nitro, until Don D'Edigio graciously sent me a JP Hobby 120 MM fan. Here, I a see if it worked, show my home made Spark Arrestor, and the Castle Creations ESC setup program, I was requested to show. Thanks again to all those who donated models to me in the past and also to Don. Also thanks for watching and please subscribe for more, as the indoor flying is now about to begin.

    If you get the time, streamlining the inlet ducting could help significantly with your thrust and efficiency. Even a minor improvement in the inlet flow can have big results.
    Awesome video, as usual. Thanks for taking us through the process!
    I also recommend using the pulse cutoff method for your Castle ESC. It creates an audible noise in the fan that warns you you're low on power without cutting off your ability to use the throttle. I've always believed in sacrificing batteries over a plane. No sense in crashing an airframe when the batteries can suffer instead.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  Před 4 lety +1

      True but the batteries and wires are all in the way. (See intake picture at 8:22) I also have to remove those batteries to charge them. I think it did pretty good even as it is. This F-16 intake is quite small and the original nitro version had that big tuned exhaust pipe in there. It would be quite difficult and why Byron put the big cheater hole in the bottom of the fuse. It gets all the air it it needs. A few miles an hour more isn’t gonna matter to me, even if it did help. Thanks.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  Před 4 lety +1

      Ps. I thought about the pulsing but wasn’t sure I’d hear it. The soft slow down is the default setting but I really relied on the transmitter telling me when to land. The soft stop won’t ruin the batteries as Jason at castle told me. It would still shut completely down at 3.2 volts. I again appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thanks.

    For soldering those huge bullet connectors I use a small butane torch that is sold in smoke shops for around $5. Refills are only $2 a bottle. Heat up the bullet with the torch till the solder melts fast and I fill the connector half way with solder and put some flux on the wires and put the cable into the bullet connector while the torch is keeping the connector and solder inside hot. I keep the heat on long enough for the wires to get hot and draw the solder into the wires for a strong joint.

    • @NightFlyyer

      Yes they make good equipment for sure. There was not landing gear in this Kit so I made them myself. I might have made the nose gear a bit too long, which I could lower, I guess, but you know......if it aint broke, why fix it. It has survived 3 hard deadstick landings, so I am happy. That R22 is a great helicopter. Happy flying and thank you.

    SPECTACULAR!!!!! When I was 9 or 10 I built a 1/48 scale F-16 in that color scheme. It hung off my ceiling in a prominent location till I went to collage. It’s very special to me and seeing yours fly brings back good memories. I’m glad you got this sorted!!! Do you think that setup could handle retracts? Or would the weight be too high? Thanks for sharing this with us.

      Thanks a lot John. A great story for sure. I appreciate about the retracts but with all the dead sticks I’ve had and hard landings this has had they would have been ruined at least twice. I’ve had lots of retracts in my jets and planes in the past including all the ones I flew in Blue Thunder. Always a problem and you always have to make a flyby to make sure they are down. Sometimes there isn’t enough time, you know. I appreciate the thought. Thanks.

    With all the failures of the previous Changesun Electric Ducted Fans (which had the wrong specs advertised) caused all the headaches and failures. • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  Před 3 lety

      If that was the one in the Changsun. I forget. I burned every motor, except the JP fan. It cannot handle the 60 amps from the two 22.2 batteries or 44.4 volts. Motors get hot anyway, but that one in the Changsun just couldn't handle that voltage. If you must use that motor, switch batteries to 2, 18.4 batteries in series and it will probably work. Just needs a longer runway for take off, but will fly, if your Byron F-16 was built light and no retracts.

    The BVM EVF should drop in. (very expensive...)
    There are others in between the price of the Changesun and the BVM.
    The correct fan should fly it better than the original .91 glow fan.
    The BVM EVF is based on the old glow version that was recommended for the airplane and gives more power. Appx 10,000 more RPM with the same impeller mold (upgraded casting using better materials)

    I'm no EDF except but I can pretty much guarantee you that your problem is using cheap ass eBay Chinese EDF system. There is NO WAY IN HELL I would ever considered using a eBay Chinese EDF system in anything other than a diy Foam-board jet especially NOT a Bryon Originals F-16 that can not be replaced. SPEND THE MONEY and get a Jetfan 120mm or a Schubeler 120mm or a Violett EVF EDF and a good HET or Hacker Motor. Any of these EDF systems are proven technology and you should have to problem getting 17-22 pounds of thrust from them.

  • @leeliddle7021

    Your failures were a result of little or no research on your part. These days there are dozens of fans and scores of motors that can produce good results in a light sport scale jet like the Byron. You just need to do your homework before you waste time and money on junk. The comment you made that you were ready to put the original ICDF unit back in just speaks to the level of your lack of knowledge about modern EDF technology. Your series probably did more harm than good if it was your intention to spread knowledge about the hobby. No hate, just fact.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  Před 3 lety

      I did plenty of research and for you to blatantly say I didn't is pretty unfair. Not many folks tried to convert a rare Byron F-16 to electric, but at least I tried at age 73 and from the old school right after my house and the original Byron Jet burned to the ground. I flew these Byron jets in the Movie Blue Thunder when we had nitro engines. You probably would not know how to even start one of them inside this jet, since your all electric. I spoke with Venom Batteries, the ESC manufacturers and many about this and learned all along. Unfortunately, the fan manufacture I used in the beginning had the wrong specs on his website when I bought the Changsun fan. That was not my fault. I finally succeeded, however. It is sure easy to put someone down after the fact. But what I learned, others can learn from too. Here is the latest flight if your interested.. czcams.com/video/21zJoA8kmZo/video.html

      I'm sorry that your house burned down. If you want to find out what's really going on in the EDF world, go to RC Groups and find the EDF sections, there are 4 large sections. Read and learn. It will save you a lot of time, money and probably some airplanes too.

      Here's an example of how to "do it yourself" a powerful edf system. This is what was available over 10 years ago. If you don't have knowledge of the basics, you'll burn up equipment and waste money.

      @@leeliddle7021 I guess you think Stupid is written on my forehead. I am quite aware, more than you think. Having been inducted into the Academy of Model aeronautics Hall of Fame for my contributions to the Modeling community, including Inventing Half rates and exponential control when I worked as an Engineer For Kraft radio control systems (the company that invented Digital control RC), Importing and distributing the first Electric helicopter, inventing the first Electric tail rotor motors for helicopters and inventing the first tailrotorless helicopter for Kyosho, plus teaching the local science class for the last 15 years the theory of flight including helicopters, for you to say I am misguiding the RC community is ludicrous. Had you done research on me you would see I have videos to prove all I say, including checking out the previous F-16 videos, where you would see I did extensive research on trying to find a 5.5 inch fan for this model. I spoke directly to all manufacturers including folks at Venom batteries, the folks at Castle Creations' escs, and the fan manufacturer. They all said my combo should work. In fact Changsun sent me a second fan free after the first one failed. But it turns out the specs on their fan were wrong. It could not handle the amps and voltage, even though their specs stated it could. There were not many options 5 years ago for 5.5 inch fans that could handle it. I also spoke directly with one of the few that did including Bob Violet who recently died, but the price was too high for me to spend, since I had to buy cars, clothes, and a house after the fire. So I am surprised you can be so critical when I at least have the balls to show my failures and my successes, so others may learn. Thanks for your comments.

And BTW, if you had watched this whole video to the end, you would see I used a 160 amp ESC (not 150 as you say) which is well within the specs of this fan, along with 50 and 60c batteries, not 15c.
