“Hear me out…” a great way to lead off this episode. It was a gem of a pitching performance and Skenes is special. Curious if your opinion would have changed if the bullpen blew another great start and lack of offense led to an another loss? Does this win…continue to reinforce the “Cherington way” of the process versus win the game in front of you. Really loved this episode…

First things first: Skenes is the best pitcher baseball. He's got both the smarts and the stuff. He's been more dominant than any other pitcher right from the start, and he's only getting better. He's a Terminator!

DK , just listening to your response to Skenes, Pirates, MLB is exactly on the plate, maybe even understated as to how it makes me feel about baseball, in a very long time. Pre 20, the Pirates and MLB were everything to me, like it was in every WWII movie reference.
I was born in 1948, enuff said. The first player strike and owners ignorance along with my hapless Steelers and NFL finally getting it, obliterated my old love for baseball. When baseball failed to cope with fair pay to players permitted the cohesion of team, player, fan, win or lose, love, they killed the goose.
This Skenens baseball Superman the Natural reignited my long lost joy and excitement for baseball again, if even only for the few seasons that we'll have him to enjoy and remind us of the past, and like Cole, the bright light is dimmed once more.
If the overwhelming greed can ever be squelched, this is how?
Goal, if a team is fortunate to find a gem or a fan favorite, they could be protected but also the player would be compensated in smalltown Pittsburgh just as now he must go to a bigtown, say NYY. Change the salary structure from that of team to that of MLB, no matter where the great player hangs his cleats. Eliminate the Team salary at local level and pool it to the USA MLB salary level. Every player at every position, at every strength, at every level of each greatness is rated from number 1 to last and payed from the MLB salary pool so that the player is justly compensated no matter what town they primarily run the bases. As a sweetener, the Skenes level talent even earns a percentage of the team in their contract, Mario Lemu, to keep them where they first bloomed. But if a player, Barry Bonds, wants to play where his father played, that can be negotiated as well, say by the receiving team giving up their first round draft pick for as long as the Great plays MLB.
This just the rudimentary net plan to actually keep that Motel 6 spotlight on, to return the MLB home team, I know who my players are comradery, and put that special gleam of joy and tear back in a loving fan's eye once more.
Oh that felt good, even if, alas, only the "Field of Dreams" hope of an old time fan, dreaming for a Babe Ruth pitcher/HR Hitter, Sandy Kofax elbow ice bag, Bob Friend, Vern Law, Vinegar Bend Mizel, ariba Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski Double Play, Dick Stuart, Ralph Kiner last at bat, moment love affair. Ahhhhhhhh

Skenes reminds me of something I believe I remember hearing Vin Scully say about Koufax: "Every time he pitched I thought going into it that it might be a no-hitter"
I'm starting to think that about Skenes. He has the dominance of Koufax and the break-neck velocity of Nolan Ryan. This guy is going to have some no-no's, and all sorts of accolades under his belt before long.

I gotta admit I was one who bitched about pulling him … but even before I listened to this I embraced my empathetic side …
that was such a sight to see for realz …
that’s why it’s important for people in da ‘Burgh to realize what they’re watching now at this moment … after almost 2 decades & more consecutive winning than anybody in any leagues … they definitely ain’t giving Sidney Patrick Crosby any respect - I hear from customers all the time that PENS should “burn it all down” - & I say - no - watch him play - let him play & we will see what else he brings us as a city - it’s a once in a lifetime player - now back to Paul Skenes 😅
it seems like it’s the same deal almost … just different sports .

I'm free associating here, but as a former geology major I often think about Paul Skenes in the context of "precious stones." Precious stones are identified by their quality, their rarity, and the beauty of their colors.
I happened to look up Skenes' birth month, and he was born in the month of May. May's birthstone is the emerald, which is widely known as a precious stone.
The emerald is a symbol of loyalty, new beginnings, rebirth, renewal, peace, and security. Think about that for a minute. Those very attributes have translated into actual transcendent experiences for Pirate fans every time Skenes takes the mound.
The emerald also represents truth, wisdom, intuition, and foresight. These qualities also seem to line up quite well with Skenes' demonstrated abilities and personal character.
    What a godsend.

The Pirates unfortunately, due to the inability of Cherington and the cheapness of Nutting are not going to be able to put a team together to take full advantage of Skenes talent over the next 3 to 4 years that he will be here. I would not be surprised that Skenes will grow more and more frustrated with the Mickey Mouse organization and at the very first opportunity he will look to get out. A bozo effort which is player after player be traded, no spend, low end of salary, managers and ownership that are the worst in the league. How can anyone say just enjoy it, don’t worry about Skenes next team. Then go out and hit like crap for so long. I stopped attending games long ago and will never go back. Skenes had a chance to do something no pitcher has done in the history of baseball. You don't take a chance at being the only one to do something away from the kid. If you think it was the right decision you are wrong and any argument you make about saving his arm could be said in the 1st inning of every game. He could hurt himself. that is true for every inning. so why throw him at all if you are worried about injury. I watched the kid at LSU he routinely threw 120+. You give the kid a chance at being the only pitcher in history to get a NoNo in their first 11 starts.

  • @andrewbesong3180

My mood swings were incredible during that game. I was lighting up like a Christmas tree through 7 innings. I had a smile on my face that I truly did not believe could be wiped off. Then I was reminded at how dumb of an organization we have from the top down, ruining what I thought to be the perfect day. Pulling him was somehow an even bigger travesty than pulling Jones through 5 at 50 some pitches. "Mountains of evidence." What are they, genuinely? The All Star Break was coming up, meaning that Skenes gets extra time to rest, and with the added rest you can move the rotation around to give him even more of a break if that is your concern. His arm has slowly been built up to 100+ pitches, and he's hit it several times this season. It's not as if you're asking him to pitch 50 more pitches than he's ever thrown in his life. Replacing the unhittable pitcher through 7 with a guy that has been extremely questionable over his last two weeks in a one run game is idiotic at best. I soak in every single pitch the Skenes throws, because he is TRULY that special. I REFUSE to take him for granted. That is why I had a smile on my face that I truly believed could not be wiped off. But how can I enjoy him to the fullest when our clown of a manager is pulling him during a no hitter with less the a hundred pitches? No competent manager in their right mind would have done it, and to hide behind the "protecting your investment" excuse is outright dishonest.

    • @usmcyounggun6879
      @usmcyounggun6879 Před 24 dny +2

Thank you for typing that because I completely agree but didn’t wanna type all of that lol.
I also think it’s naive to think he will just have unlimited more chances when it doesn’t always work out like that. If you have a chance for him to make history then go for it! For him and the fans. Probably would have taken another 15-20 pitches for him to possibly be in the record books.
And also the argument about needing to win the game doesn’t make sense to me because Skenes is the best pitcher we have and the best in baseball. They already couldn’t hit him and if I needed to win a game I would rather have Skenes with 100 pitches on his arm than anyone else on that team with 0.

Yeah, I sweat what's going to happen to Skenes in years to come. What would Crosby's legacy be if you put him into a franchise that didn't care? All anybody would be talking about is how great he could've been. You cross-referenced the Penguins in your recent episode so I'll do it here. For the Pirates ownership group to not take advantage of a generational superstar would be a complete disrespect to Skenes and the Pirates loyal fan base that sits through that rain delay for a 7-0 loss. The last time the Buccos got even remotely close, they broke it all down the season directly after. So how long until we have to see Skenes pitch in a different uniform? The optimist in me hopes we see a Workd Series instead, but the realist in me can't bring myself to make-believe it.

The way he was pitching the last few innings I would have at least let him start the 8th and go from there. 1 more bad pitch from Holderman and we'd have a whole different story line this morning. Cherringtons asinine analytics had him pulled is my guess. And DK, there's nothing wrong with the 1964 mentality. Who would you like to compare? Vernon Law, Elroy Face, how about Harvey Haddix. I think he may have pitched over 100 pitches a few tmes. We're making today's athletes soft. And I get it, its about the $.

How often do no hitters happen? Nolan Ryan once threw 235 pitches in 13 inning, struck out 19, and didn’t miss his next start. Skenes hits a magic number not even over 100 and the only thought is it’s instantly “we must sit this kid!” “Gotta preserve his arm.” If you can’t let him try and at least finish the game which who knows he could do in a few more pitches he was still dealing the last 16 guys he faced he struck out 8 and none reached. You talk about rewards? That’s supposed to be a reward to Skenes. If he wants out then fine. Gives up a hit or walk fine. But just to do it just because? We don’t need to step back you need to quit covering for whoever is making these calls either as one or a collective. It’s trash. Pirates sending Paul Skenes to the ASG in Arlington. Might as well leave him there because the Rangers and the other 6 willing to spend teams will be in the running for him. When he leaves traded or FA will happen right about the time Nutting's leases on PNC will be coming to the end and will mark the end of MLB baseball in Pittsburgh. Try as you might DK...it's a hopeless situation and the one thing you're clearly overlooking. This little thing called Tommy John Surgery.
