- This video features a time lapse of the April 8, 2024 solar eclipse. This time lapse was captured using the DJI Osmo Action 4.
While this day featured plenty of clouds, the progression of light to darkness back to light is present and dramatic in this time lapse. This time lapse represents the passage of four hours of time with the eclipse peaking near the middle.

Even though there were plenty of clouds around, the dramatic transformation of light to darkness during the peak of the eclipse is very apparent in this time lapse. The eclipse peaked around 3:15pm at this location. It was dark enough that crickets began chirping outside for a few minutes at the peak.
If you look closely you can see the sun when it was nearly entirely eclipsed through breaks in the clouds mid-way through the time lapse.
I time lapsed the eclipse with the Pocket 3, Action 4, and Ace Pro. Quality was close with all 3.
Yes, I used those three as well as the Hero 12. I found the quality to be similar as well.
I wanted to hop on here and say a HUGE thank you for both your overall timelapse video (Action 4), as well as the eclipse specific video. My wife and I traveled up to our camp in the NEK of Vermont for the eclipse. Using your tips and settings I was not only able to get a wonderful full totality video, but I used your advice on ND filters and the "more cameras taking pictures" to get some great shots on my iPhone 13 Pro Max and my trusty Nikon D90 with a 300mm zoom. I'm SO happy I found your channel ahead of this once in a lifetime event! (I know other eclipses will occur - just not to sure I'd be traveling as far as I'd need to! :) )

Thank you. Yes, I actually think the cloud cover added a bit to this. I didn’t mind as it helped me even be able to view some of it near maximum eclipse without needing the glasses.

Yes, the cloud cover in a way was helpful and added to the time lapse vs just a clear blue sky.

Great footage! I used a GoPro hero 10 and it was on for about 5 hours and all I can see is the sun, like any other day. I'm in MD - so should have been 80-85%. I could see it with my eyes, but the camera didn't get it. Tried a few different settings in Lightroom, but no help :(
Thanks! It sounds like you had brighter conditions than I did and maybe fewer clouds. If I didn’t have some clouds going over the sun while it eclipsed I would not have been able to see some of those frames where the sun was largely covered but the fade from light to darkness was definitely noticeable.

Did you use anything to protect the camera lens?
Nope. No solar filter. I did use an ND filter though so I could get slower shutter speeds.
