I build arcades from 3/4" MDF. When you are dont builing with MDF, mix 4 parts water to 1 part wood glue and paint it on all of the cuts. When it's dry, it will leave a pebbled finish that is very durable and dent resistant. Simply sand the pebbles off wiht 120 grit and you have a durable, smooth paintable surface that won't soak in any more water.

As a more mature UK viewer, I had a nostalgia rush watching this - those Aluminium pulls are so retro 1970’s. Who knew when we ripped all those kitchen cabinets out a decade later, that the style would come back in 2022! ❤️👍

Very nice idea with the platform! It really simplifies shop cabinets, both the construction and the leveling. A platform idea for a typical suburban garage shop: In my last set of shop cabinets I designed, they have their back corners resting on the 3" concrete perimeter foundation running around the garage, that the walls sit on, then are also screwed to the wall through their back nailer strips. The top of that concrete is level, and the floating effect of having the cabinets 6-8" off the floor allows for water and slush runoff from the cars in bad weather to not ruin the cabinets, plus allows for floor cleaning under them (easier than legs would have). I had to beef up the nailer strips and where they tie in to the carcass, since so much of the weight hangs from them. It met the needs.

When my Dad and I built our shop we got really lucky when it came to the cabinet part. A lady that worked with my sister was having her complete kitchen remodeled so we got the cabinets and counter top and base for free. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

These are fine cabinets and you showed a good way to install them! Only things I would change is painting before assembling and I like to use the 32mm system.

  • @tinkermouse-scottrussell3738

I build similar cabinets, I don’t bother with the toe kick at all Instead I install angle iron approximately 5 to 6 inches above the floor or the room needed to easily get a broom or to hose down under the cabinets (air or water) for easy clean-up.
Play safe from Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Awesome job, I built some pretty close but didn’t know about the Armirite? Built a panel of six drawers and four pull out trays for some existing metal cabinets I purchased six years ago. I used aluminum angle for the drawer pulls, turned out trick. Thanks for sharing!👍🏼

  • @a0flj0

I used aluminum corner guards as slides for workshop drawers. They probably wear slower and slide smoother than masonite strips. John Heisz has a video about making wooden full extension drawer slides.

You make it look so easy! It's all about having the right tools for the job - those I don't have yet, but working on it slowly. For now, it's easier/faster/cheaper for me to buy the cabinets and put them on the wall of my "yet to be finished" shop. Still the shelf idea out of a door was genius! Thanks for the video and look forward to the next one.

  • @Danman1972
    @Danman1972 Před 2 lety

Love the Masonite idea cheap and easy. I've used it in the past for a sacrificial work top for my work bench. Just replace it when it gets bad. For a few garage things in the past I picked up a wooden ikea dresser from the curb. I've used the draw sides and fronts a lot of odd things from jigs to small projects. I toss all the hardware in a bucket and reused all the roller sides for "shop drawers" nice and free other than time. A quick drive through any HOA neighborhood on bulk pick up day will likely find what you need. Love the hollow core door idea as well. I see them a lot out around here. I have thought of using them in the attic as well for flooring for lighter boxes.

  • @thelostarchivesserialvault5353

It would be so simple to use your table saw to put a notch in the 4 sides and dry insert the bottom about 1/2 from the bottom. With the addition of a glued cleat or 2 under the bottom notched into the drawer frame side, the drawer would be dramatically stronger. As long as the cleat does not extend below the box frame the drawer would still slide normally. I would also take a bar of soap and rub it along the bottom and side of the drawer where it touches the slide rail. It will smooth things out dramatically.

Great video! I love the hardboard drawer slides. My Dad built 100s of cabinets during his career and very few had metal drawer slides. He always had a bar of Ivory soap in his tool box. The drawers fit snug and the wood slides were sanded and rubbed with ivory soap. They slid as smooth as silk and just needed a new soap application every few years.

Great job!!! I've done old fashion drawers - wood on wood, using a wax so the drawers slide, but the Masonite....great idea. My grandmother uses them for her miniatures, small index card size landscape paintings. The smooth side is slippery as heck, especially when piece against another. Great idea!!! I had no idea you can get it that thin, or where to get it, but I will be looking for it. I'm about to build our garage out, 1/2 for family stuff, the other half my wood working shop. Your drawers and doors would be perfect for the family side, the wood working side I want to make more intricate and show more craft, so that I can show both the expensive and detailed or simple, fully functional and more reasonable.
Great job and looking forward to more work from you.

Those look simple and easy to make but, call me a skeptic on those drawers durability - especially for shop use if you really are counting on them to support a heavy load and seeing bottoms do the same thing. I’ll continue to use finger joints or better still, dove tail joints. That has always been true for wood joints and even more true when using fragile stuff like MDF. I have used not Armorlite but you did not say anything about it being stronger than MDF - only more water resistant so I’d continue to use a groove or dado for the drawer bottoms. I’m a skeptic for good reason. I’ve had drawers pull apart and bottoms separate too many times. Quicker isn’t usually better, especially with fragile material like MDF. I do like the idea of using aluminum like you did here. That does seem quicker and easier. Thanks much for your well done videos. Keep them coming.

Awesome job April. I am trying to get into wood working but tools here in Canada cost a fortune. I really need a table saw but not in my cards. I suffer from a work injury in 2013 and my working days are finished. I am trying to save for a table saw but when you only make $1000.00can it makes it really tough. I have been through all sorts of used buy and sell type websites and the saws that are worth buying are way over priced. Trying to keep my mind from going into dark places.

I see you are from England so I don't know if this will apply or not. Here in the States we have people/companies called public adjusters. They are basically companies that work for you against the insurance companies. They know the ins and outs of the insurance game so they can normally get you covered.

@@rogermccaslin5963 thanks not really same over here. Only got the ombudsman but they're usually on insurance side and other than that it's having to pay a solicitor and take them to court it's so wrong! But thanks for the info I'll definitely do more digging.

April, did you consider HDPE or Delrin strips for slides. More durable and water resistant. Also, if you are going to use Armorite for the water resistant properties, wouldn't you want to avoid Masonite slides and backs?

    • @stjesuskat666
      @stjesuskat666 Před rokem

I think that she may have been less concerned about water getting on the slides and backs because they're less openly exposed compared to the rest of the cabinets.

I love your ingenuity. I rarely watch one of your videos without learning something.
Btw, if you want perfectly clean cuts on both sides of any sheet goods you cut out on your CNC machine, use a good quality compression bit. I prefer 1/4" even if I have to sacrifice a little speed (the bit is more fragile than a larger diameter bit) for a perfect quality cut.

Another even easier option for long shelves is to get a pair of bi-fold doors for closets. They're already half the width of a regular door. Just remove the hinges in the middle and you're good to go. I got a set from my local Re-Store for $5 and have some very sturdy large shelves.

Great vid April, maybe an idea, the hardboard on the draws put another piece rough side down inside the draw glued. Imo would add more strength to the base, plus gives smooth inside :)

OK I can't saw a straight line!!! So, a longtime secret desire was to build a "Ham Shack" in one of my kids left behind bedrooms. Old house, carpet hiding not level floor below, outlets installed by "flexible" electrician on warped and irregular knee wall studs. Large working space is three sided desk.8'x3'x3/4" Plywood. Too supply strong support for HEAVY radios and ancillary equipment, I found two draw filing cabinets [6 in total, at my local Salvation Army and or Goodwill Stores; Oh don't forget Hebetate for Humanity! I discovered that construction height varies greatly by makers. Used discarded 2x4's to create bases to make all filing cabinets level. Stained and varnished plywood, attached an edging. and called it Dr. Frank Stained Desk. Then You make MDF and hardboard base cabinet's! Where were you when I needed you? Desk is center 10'x36", left 8'x 36" right 5'x9" Right side is a butt joint supported by File cabinet, Left extends center to corner [2 'x 3'] then runs full 3'X5'] I have been watching your CZcams since before you moved out of garage. Then moved to Texas. 96 Harold AKA KB1OZZ

Hello there Miss April, I am using gliders for the drawers on some of my cabinetry..... but to do a small corner cabinet in a closet, instead of building a whole cabinet I would like to build one from the base board to the ceiling using smaller drawers and your masonite drawers, and do it very craftsman like. So it looks like it was built in the 50's when the home was built. As a simple piece one of the carpenters just put together with scrap for the home owner as they were finishing.
But, I do like your hinges for a project I am doing in our garage.
I was wondering, the doors I am making are 1/2" cabinet grade birch finished plywood. That I am staining on the outside and either clear coating or painting a white gloss on the inside.
Your hinges look like they should work fine with the plywood doors, instead of MDF and the cabinets are frameless like your MDF carcass is.....
Do you concur? If so where would I get these 'magic Euro hinges'?..... I'm hoping it's not from a leprechaun at the end of a rainbow.....
I'm only adding humor because you have links for everything else....but the hinges. LOL😂
Again, great work. Keep at it. Jon

Nice job April !! I've seen a bunch of other You Tube Makers videos on shop cabinets and the material of choice has always been baltic birch plywood. Ouch $$$. If Armirite is a more cost effective alternative, its the way to go. Same with the draw slides; They're about $20-$25/slide for a full sized drawer.

You can look up on CZcams the project you want to do and usually you will be able to find a video showing how. Start small, building on your confidence and experience. Learn from your mistakes. I bought my first tools from yard sales and pawn shops, buying only the tool I needed then saved for the next one. Thanks for watching.
