This woman is a breath of fresh air. Reminds me of how my primary school education was. As a child I didn't understand the importance of what she is saying, but now living in our current society, I recognize the importance of instilling correct values in children.
Breath of reason, wisdom and sanity
@YerielleEliana It starts in the home.I grew up this way and thought everybody did until I got to public school. I realized witnessing the disrespectful behavior of the children was NOT properly dissuaded by the parents. I remember thinking with amazement "His mom let him get away with that" Pretty often. And I understood then not with the certainty and clarity as now but still not understood that old saying About people not having "home training" If no one's doing it at home you can forget about it by the time they get to school. I like what this woman is talking about. But unfortunately it's misplaced responsibility.
@@Stephon723 yeah I understand your point for sure. If parents are not engaged then it’s all for nothing. I’m assuming that the parents who do send their kids to her school are in agreement with the way they go about education, otherwise the kids wouldn’t be there. Great point
If u think shes fresh air u havent seen much. There are schools run without teachers, schools that are just glorified playgrounds.
U didnt know much if u think this is fresh air. There are schools without teachers, schools that doesnt have exams.
Been a while since I've seen someone pushing back on his ideas and saying he is wrong. I love Peterson because he seeks those people out who don't exactly agree with him.
Kudos to both of you
Finding someone who disagrees with Jordan Peterson is trivial. Finding someone who disagrees with him and is intelligent and articulate is borderline impossible. Nice to see it happen for once.
I love that she's not apologising for it. Naomi Klein was on and kind of telling him he was wrong but apologising profusely for doing it. She's so used to being shouted at.
Katherine is also used to being shouted at but just shouts back.
@@timeless8 everything she said is just catering to the right and shallow. Tell me something she mentioned that we haven't been saying it since we have kids.
LOVE THIS! Shes challenging Peterson and Peterson is open to learn while still being firm on his stance
And it’s great to see how positively he responds when he’s properly challenged by someone he respects.
Watch him more frequently!! He challenges HIS OWN IDEAS in almost every video!
Peterson is on a journey himself, one that completely fascinates me while it causes me to also fear for him. It has to be hard to maintain one's footing when confronted with so much attention, with adulation on one end and malevolence on the other.
The man who learns other each day is surrounded by mirrors..
@@fiddlermargie He is an amazing individual risking EVERYTHING to help us. GOD BLESS HIS PATH!!
So very refreshing to listen to two very intelligent and knowledgeable people wrestling with ideas and not abusing each other.
Catherine Birbalsingh is a blessing.
School boards the world over could learn a great deal from her and her school.
As a teacher in the private sector ,I love, love this lady's ideology and strive for the same teaching plan that she describes.
I TOTALLY agree with this lady’s stance on children. Proverbs 22:6 says, Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.
This woman could turn around the dismal future of any country in which she was made Education Minister. She's wasted running a school. One of the shining stars of education in the world today.
Candle on the water, shining city on a hill.
Not a waste at all. A good example to emulate can perhaps be even more influential.
I think this is the attitude she says is problematic.
She loves her school. She will never leave it.
A great teacher is not to change the world but to teach many students how to change the world and that creates real and lasting change. In my opinion.
@GearheadGarageCan
Teachers teaching students how to change the world is not their job. That turns teaching into agenda-laden activism. Teach kids about the world and they will figure out for themselves how best to live in--changing what should be changed and preserving that which should be preserved.
When I was a little kid,I didn't like one of the vegetables that I had to eat. My dad saw this, and told me the importance of vegetables, and told me that I have to eat vegetables. He then pointed to the encyclopedias, and told me that if I found a vegetable with equivalent or better nutrition, then we could eat that one. And that's what I did, and that's what happened.
good dad. Treated you like an adult, and surprise...you did just fine.
My child has autism. When she was very young she had a very sensitive palate and was a very picky eater. We just told her to try the vegetables/food first without forcing her to eat the whole amount. When she got to her teens and her repertoire of foods had increased plus she knew what foods were good for health, we told her she didn’t have to like whichever vegetable was put before her, she just had to eat it because it was good for her. She could choose to eat less of it but not totally reject it except for certain vegetables like for example coriander, bitter gourd and okra which can be considered acquired tastes. The variety was the goal and not every single food/vegetable on the planet.
We have friends who just allowed their neurotypical kids to eat only the foods which they like and they grew up with a smaller repertoire of foods which they could accept which meant more deep fried foods and lesser vegetables.
I prefer to parent in a strict and authoritative way when the children are young. Then we can be friends when they become adults.
I notice that some parents are fearful or are very uncomfortable when their young children get angry with them & give them the cold shoulder so they end up giving in to their children. Being overly strict or overly permissive both can produce undesired outcomes.
What vegetable was it?
❤
So instead, if you were silenced and forced to comply like this women suggests instead of invited into a thoughtful dialogue do you think the psychological outcome would be better, worse, or the same?
In the military the rule is you learn to take orders so one day you will be ready to give them.. You must be knowledgeable about your box before you can think outside it.
Also in classical art, you have to master the basics, how to draw, how to represent what you see before you can express yourself properly as an artist. You can see in modern art how unskilled most of these artists are and they produce nonsense.
I grew up with no guidance, rules or restrictions. I just tried my best to make good decisions and I did okay. I have children and I consider my husband and my guidance and rules to be one of the most valuable gifts I can give my children. Without oversight you often feel like no one cares about you and you feel alone. Love is setting limits.
Your last sentence is "Golden!"!!!
Brings the true meaning of "This is going to hurt me more than you - but it must be done anyway" eh?
@@indignant_gimptheres no way shes gonna be as popular as she is if it isn't for wokeness. We already have perfect education structures in countries like finland which is in the top of education.
Its totally refreshing to hear common sense down to earth thoughts on raising children
And that is one of the reassons adults are so sick in the head and why adults on the right are so repressed and wants to represse the world 😂😂😂
This Lady is a Heroine, she deserves a Medal and to be honoured!
Sad, the World has lost the Virtues, this lady puts forward!

Jordan ate those "you're wrong" with class. That's a man.
For real! I was like oh damn she’s thought hard and discovered something nuanced and great, but she didn’t follow the “you are all wrong” with anything that impactful
@@masteroogway2853 yeah, Jordan agrees with her k-12 approach. He is just taking a larger focus on the University level of things and she seemed to think his University approach scaled to k-12 which it doesn't.
@@JediSteele No, she thinks his attention is in the wrong place because the foundations aren't well-formed by university... and she's right.
@@jeffreychongsathien I think he believes that k-12 needs rebuilt from the ground up but isn't in an area of expertise on how to handle that. What he does know is the University because he has worked in many of them and can apply his knowledge directly to it and reshaping what happens at that level. He did a podcast with Eric Kauffman about how to change with k-12 so it's still something he's trying to learn about.
@@JediSteeleexactly. I also don’t think her ‘you’re wrong’ statement was at all convincing. No, you shouldn’t teach children what to think, this has worked out terribly. You teach them how to think, and the best ideas win. Sure, teach them values, but don’t tell them what to think.
My wife and I love your videos. We are psychology graduate students, recently we also started a youtube channel related to psychology, you are a huge motivation for us.

@@_gnam Thank you a lot!.:)
Amen! I've been saying this for years. Thinking starts with known facts and information. One cannot think in a vacuum. If you want to consider, for instance, how to avoid war, you have to know a lot of things first: What motivates human behaviors? What inspires humans toward aggression and acquisition? What are the factors that have led to wars and conflicts in the past? Are there examples of competing cultures or countries avoiding conflict? How did they accomplish it? And so on. Teaching people how to think starts with collecting appropriate information and sufficiently committing it to memory so that one's intellect can analyze and reason from a set of facts to a logical conclusion.
Thinking is critical. So is knowing things.
Oh, yeah! That's the thing! Just now, as 37 y.o. woman I can see what you mean. I totally agree. As kids we were complaining about the amount of knowledge that is expected to master at school. Just recently I discovered how important it was to build the solid base, the map of facts in my head that allows me to come back whenever I want and go dig deeper the topics I'm interested in. Even learning different things by heart doesn't seem so pointless now. I see how it develops our brains and it's a great excerise in reasonable amount. I hope I'll succesfully pass the importance of knowledge, reading and than thinking independently to my kids. Thank you for the video.
I'm a huge Jordan Peterson fan, and I got a Masters in Teaching degree from Seattle U. in 2008. I totally agree with him that the accreditation process should be taken away from the Education professors. They don't teach valuable teaching skills, but instead promote propaganda.
I love listening to her… she’s so confident of her position and it seems based on years of experience. I’d love to work for her
Having grown up with hardly any rules was tough so many conversations I needed guidance on and at the time I turned to the internet instead of my parents and the lead me to make decisions I now regret so I can’t allow the lack of rules in my daughters like to lead her the same way kids need a lot of guidance. I had so much freedom that it made me seek restrictions. The only thing you need to make sure kids don’t end up going against the rules is to have them understand the why behind it. It makes a huge difference to be given the knowledge versus just being told what to do specially for teenagers.
In simple & concise.
Brilliant.
The passion that embodies Katherine Birbalsingh when she speaks of Education sings symbiotically with the mind.
She's great company to have as an ally.
Sacrificing my 15 minutes was humbly worth in gratitude.
I retired three years ago after a 60yr employment stint as a muti-disciplined engineer in a vast cross section of industry.
My higher education was split between the theoretical learning and practical hands on the job, time in college and time on an industrial site.
I consider myself very fortunate to have had this educational opportunity and the in service training which continued throughout my 60yrs.
My knowledge and experience were greatly enhance with this approach.
FINALLY!!! It's impossible not to teach what to think. Children need structure and discipline.
Amen ❤
Two wise human beings sharing such valuable tips if only parents would listen & apply this help! Thank you for always sharing such valuable seeds of information! 👏 ❤
I disagree sometimes with her but she is very passionate about her knowledge and I respect that and took in some new info. Thanks J and K!
Every parent and teacher should listen to this!
I love her enthusiasm
As a father, yes, thank you for the insight. Parents duty it's very clear.
2:30 p.m. U.S. eastern time...36 year public school teacher...'Spot on" from one strict teacher to another. Children need knowledge to think critically and creatively. You are absolutely right on this! Jordan, I always agree with you. I enjoy watching you listen as well as speak. Please listen carefully so you can help our school educate children with good old common sense. We must save our public schools before it's too late...if it isn't already. Keep listening. She is right!
Yeah, in my country, it's the same. Last thirty years or so we hear: "Our schools are too based on memorising facts, we need to reform them and teach the children how to think logicaly." So there is a reform after reform, children are taught less and less facts and our ratings in international comparations are lower and lower.
I've heard a student complaining that university teachers when questioning him on an admitance exam wanted to know facts and not his opinion. I told him: "How could they ask your opinion on the subject, if you didn't know the basic facts?" He said something like: "I can Google the facts if I need them."
It seems to be a mantra repeated over and over and even by people who should know better. "Today, you can find facts easily on Internet." Yes, the problem is, that Internet contains the truthful facts, but also a lot of BS, all mixed together. To be able to distinguish the truth from lies, you need to have some basic knowledge and experience. You won't get it if you are not fed facts.
Exactly rights and responsibility go hand in hand. Children have limited rights because Because by virtue of the fact that they are children they have limited responsibility
They do so well because, with kindness, they're given rules and boundaries, so they're happy and safe to explore themselves, their friends and their environment.
I like this lady!!! People always ask me why my kids are so good and intelligent…for the reasons she just stated!
I'm a teacher from New Zealand (where Katharine was born). I think she's amazing. My bucket list includes visiting Michaela school and my colleague and I are planning a trip to Wembly next year. I think she's the realist boss babe ever! She handles the woke mob with poise and grace and she's a total role model for me. Blessings Katharine from your homeland N.Z!
Fantastic dialogue! I live in the US and had to give up my very lucrative career to take care of my disabled daughter, as the schools were enabling her manipulative behavior. They stated they could not use negative reinforcement to engage in real teaching because of possible litigation. But I can tell you with certainty, if it weren't for the strict, hard love that I received from my parents, I would not be as successful today as a mother or as a person
Wonderful to listen to her passion in children's education! Katherine is a breath of fresh air and yes, I agree we have to teach what to think and would add ... ways to think. My teen son chose to go to public school in our town to be with his friends. As parents we have for his entire life including now continue to equip him in a moment by moment basis 'what to think' and different perspectives or ways to think. I'm happy to say, he's willingly does his own research outside of his school. For example, he was taught exactly as she said about the history (here based on the ideologies of the left in Canada) but he goes further to talk with friends who are indigenous and live on the reserve near out town -- who have a variation of their own history --and going further he finds other sources online that have even more variations of the same history. From all of this he forms his own conclusions to discuss in his classroom and with us. It is amazing to hear his perspectives as he develops his own understanding. God bless you both for going into this subject.
It’s the parents that’s need to be doing this not the schools.
Ideally I agree, however in a broken society it is only an institution like her school that can readjust and undo the damage.
Her school is in the most multicultural part of London. She has students from all faiths and backgrounds and is teaching them to think ‘together’ and feel sociologically British regardless of their ethnic and religious differences.
This has not gone down well with those that want to ‘decolinise’ and create religious strife.
She was recently sued by a Muslim student who demanded a prayer room.
Inn protest a group of Muslim pupils started praying in the school playground at lunchtimes.
Glass bottles were tossed over the school railings by Muslims outside and a brick was thrown through one teacher’s window.
The students court fees have been entirely funded by the Muslim activists of course, but Katherine had to pay out of her own pocket.
Katherine won the court case because this school has kept all religion out to create a unified place of learning (which includes Christianity).
What this was really about was that religious extremists do not like the sense of integration that she instills in the students.
Instilling a shared feeling of being part of the same community regardless of ideological differences.
The fuel for crime amongst ethnic minorities is that ‘feeling of being an outsider’, and this teacher opposes that and has created an educational atmosphere that brings everyone all together. Her results speak for themselves and show everyone that even the poorest and most marginalised communities can achieve the same.
They aren’t ‘Christian vs Muslim’ or ‘black vs white’.
Unfortunately there are those who want to undermine this and create religious and ethnic segregations.
This Muslim activists group is appealing and since they have funds exceeding £200,000 pounds they’ll probably grind her done until they win.
Once Muslims are allowed special privileges that will pave the way for all others and will undermine the cohesion for academic success that she has achieved.
@@DipsyMum29 Read "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. She talks about how Islam is not a religion of peace and is incredibly backward.
It’s both. Kids spend a lot of time at schools.
It's essential that both parents and teachers do this. Especially since kids spend most of their day in school; the teachings must be solid & consistent.
Gosh this was amazing to listen to. I love when specialists in the field respectfully disagree and debate. This was a treat to listen to. More of this please!!!

Thank you for doing the interview and posting!
Oh my goodness I’ve been thinking this my whole life! I’m so happy to hear her say this.
I love this conversation and I love Katharine. Thank you Jordan.
Our parents chose what my siblings and I wore when we were young. They bought eatables without asking what we like but we were very happy to get any snacks. Nobody was allowed to complain about the dishes or waste food; the only exception where one gets to choose what to eat was when we got sick and that's still the unwritten rule even today.
We could have more but we were brought up with little. We didn't know and sometimes it really hurted but our upbringing made us grow up to be grateful to have anything.
I LOVE that you interviewed Katharine! She is brilliant and I have been begging for all of us in my part of FL to look to her lead!!
I love the arguing here it's clean and productive
Katharine and her staff have done an outstanding job.
One of the best back and forth exchanges I have ever seen. He really hammered down on the difference between restricting freedom and restricting the domain of freedom. There is a profound difference between the two.
Dang! I like her a lot. I've been following her for years and I wish we had her school in our community.
Brilliant discussion. Absolutely love her!
Hear, hear! Sipped and agreed with each word. Just amazing and amazed! Thank you Katharine (and Jordan) for this moment.
She is so spot on!
I read about this school last week in a book about teaching. I’m glad to be learning methods that will really help children learn what and how to think instead of just casting them adrift on a sea of ideas unarmed. We all need a framework or else ideas are meaningless and even threatening. I hope I can do this awareness justice when I start teaching.
So excited for this interview!!! Love this woman!!
This woman is an absolute hero!!!
It ended and I thought, "NO. That can't be all! I was so looking forward to this! Fifteen minutes is not nearly enough!" And I am SO relieved to have then read that the full interview will be released tomorrow, and this is just a clip of it. Whew!
It sounds like she might have a classical school. In classical schools, the elementary years are spent learning facts, and they learn lots and lots of them. In middle school, they are taught logic, how to argue. Dorothy Sayers said that at that age young people like to argue, so teach them to argue well. In high school, they learn to compare and contrast their views with other views, and learn how to present a case for their views which takes into account the best arguments for other views. In both middle school and high school, they are still learning lots of facts while learning the other skills.
Hi Jordan, your the best
One of the core elements of the timeless truths imparted through a traditional ("old fashioned') education is the cultivation of profound knowledge within the individual. This knowledge should equip them to confront grave calamities and vicissitudes of life successfully, forging an alliance between religious understanding of right and wrong, and the principles of truth and compassion.
Amazing. Yes, this is exactly what they need and myself as a parent! Thank you
Oooh looking forward to this!
WOW. Going to listen to the whole interview and share this with my young adult kids.
I watched a video of a teacher doing what she claims is impossible. He got fired for it. He taught a student how to think by asking him questions and that child is going to be better for it for the rest of his life.

For the sake of the argument itself:
I see that children grown up in homes where they feel safe and have a job (going to school) where they can come home and find themselves in peace, is much more important than screaming at a child to get straight A's, for example. You did not say that, no, but catch my drift :)

This lady sounds just like my Chinese, Christian mom lol. I can’t say I’ve always liked her growing up because of her strictness. But I’ve come to appreciate her so much more now that I’m an adult.
Rules (strictness) without relationship ends in rebellion. I say be careful with "strict." That environment is one of the reasons why I don't want kids. I don't want to somehow recreate that upbringing for someone else.

I love this lady she should be hired by the government and put in charge of education 👏
The Sibling Society - a book written in the 90s by the late Robert Bly (poet, Jungian inspired myth-maker and storyteller) observes how Western society has unlearned how to create adults. This I think is related to the mistake parents are making in trying to be their kids best friend....... which itself maybe a symptom of everything else competing for the child's favour (social media influencers, celeb culture, etc). Bly's book is worth a read, especially if you're raising kids.
So very refreshing to hear someone with common sense. Kids should learn from us, we are not best friends for them, we should guide them and give them as many good advices as we can. I grow up without good guidance and as a single mom I wanted to be best friend with my only child. BIG BIG MISTAKE, I regret tremendously. Parents duty it's very clear, children need structure and discipline. Katharine and her team are great and kids from that school are so lucky.
I was always friends with my mom, as toddler, kids, teen and adult. I dont like every food either and dont make foods I dont like, so I dont expect my kid to eat it either if they dont like something. I didnt have to as a kid either and then as an adult I like every kind of food.
This is amazing!

Great discussion
I adore Katharine. I'm sure I could sit and converse with her forever. We need more leaders in education (and wider) who are practical and positive, and display what has sadly become seen as "old fashioned" wisdom. :-)
Such a vibrant discussion
She is brilliant and absolutely right.
Wonderful!
11:55 “You can’t be friends with your children when they are children and when they are adults, you have to choose”
14:45 “They [children] are taught through an ideological lens, which is 2024, as opposed to teaching them the basics of their own history so that they can feel they are British.”
Great excerpt thank you.
Clarity and the translation of these concepts and the approach in communication in the ideas that at least opens a door to openness to further exploration....super curious about the conversation and what further to learn from it.
The first half - her speech was an absolute banger
I think the psychological effect a relationship one has with authority during their childhood is what must be at the forefront of conversations on how to raise responsible adults. I believe that too much restriction on freedom can probably affect a child's/person's capacity for intuition, and with that, true moral judgement. I say this because I think it greatly affects their ability to make independent decisions, or even risk making them when it might absolutely be necessary, and can even make them enjoy the absence of authority in a deeply perverse manner. Reasonably set boundaries may allow your child to understand trial and error in a manner that's not too costly, but still costly when they play on the set boundaries or when they make the wrong decision.
