Yeah and since the very beginning hes been getting shitty games in the mail from fans lol. Hes lived a tortured existence for our pleasure. Hes retro video game jesus. Its how hes got so many goddamn games in his collection.
And has been doing AVGN since 2004

Houdini Catfish and you could order a now-rare video cassette called the Cinemassacre Gold Collection containing a lot of his older works and even the first two AVGN episodes back when it was just called “Bad NES Games”

AVGN started as 3 videos on Cinemassacre, his own website as a short 3 episode parody series back in 2004 (James is an independent filmmaker and was more into horror movies at the time.), before being found by the website GameTrailers' ScrewAttack, around 2006 and getting sponsored to turn it into a full fledged series (that's why there's the gametrailers logo in most of his earlier videos before the intro theme song)
Due to copyright and copycats (Like IrateGamer) he had to flip-flop between being able to upload his episodes on CZcams or not (so most of his early stuff was only available on Screwattack or Cinemassacre) up until 2010 or so.

Shit pickle was a character in skits he used to upload to CZcams and his website. He appeared in at least two AVGN episodes. “Action 52” and “Master Chu and the Drunkard Hu” I believe.

AVGN Adventures was made by a proper Indie Developer with funding, a huge difference from the others (well, the Typing of the Dead Spoof as well). There's been a second AVGN Adventures, which I heard was even better, and Adventures 1 was remade and improved with 2. Well, just from accounts of people who played both.

Avgn was around at the onset of CZcams around 2005-6. It was the first channel I ever subbed to. Back then he had about 3 or 4 episodes.
But his first episode was made in 2004 and was uploaded on another website.

You guys should react to Board James Mr. Bucket, The Dream Phone and 13 Dead end Drive episodes.
They're largely donations, as well as games that friends and families have given him over the years (though you look in recent years, there's not as many games, largely because he built a literal "video rental store" in his basement for another review show. Plus, he's got two kids now).
The AVGN Adventures game was professionally made hence how good it is. I bought it on the Wii U and was hard but I finished it. It was meant to come out on PS4 and XB1 but for whatever reason it hasn't. It has a sequel too on PC and I think Wii U too.
stingersplash I have the game on 3DS and no, the sequel isn't on Wii U. Both are supposed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch though.

Lol the older games are the expensive ones. James has been collecting since you could get NES games for 99 cent at Funko World and he also gets donations and I'd say makes a pretty good living thanks to his channel these days

He is indeed from the day most of these games were made. I believe he was born in 80 or 81. So he was about 6-8 yo at the peak of the NES.

I know I'm extremely late, but, I think all those games in his room are all from fan donations, since a lot of them are probably very rare, and fans sometimes send him those games, including ones they want him to review, at least that's what I think.

She should know that older games are nowadays even more expensive than a PS4 game for 60 or 70 bucks. Some of his games (a single game) cost around 2 or 3 or 4 hundred bucks. Yes you read right, there are older games who people sell (used) for nearly 1000 bucks. He even has all of them. So it is a treasury.
James bought most of his retro game collection in the early 2000's, when they were cheap and no one wanted them. Now they're expensive as hell, ironically, thanks in part to his popularity, lol.
also new consoles using the now no longer under copyright hardware were released by third parties. so lots of people were able to play the games without spending a lot of money to get a working over 25 years old console.
Lots of fan donations, too.
