- Discover this top tip for drawing detail in ink without having to draw all the detail! Don't be afraid or overwhelmed by masses of detail ever again. Learn to draw the effect of the detail. Stephen both explains and demonstrates this concept using a complex reference photo of the rooftops of Bern
I love this! I'm not sure if you noticed, but I think your cathedral got a little angled, because right as you began that portion your reference image was bumped and it shifted to that angle. I am rather impressed with your capacity to be that accurate across what you are seeing. I'm excited to see more of your content.
I do remember realising it was a bit crooked and being very annoyed and then trying to adjust the sides of the tower to try and make it look straighter. Not everything goes yo plan!😆. I have a perspective playlist if you’re interested, and a separate playlist also with just 10 videos which cover the subject more broadly if you’re interested. 😀
Beautifully explained. I was never before aware of how such sketches were drawn.
Glad to have helped. Hope you try some more videos. 😀
Lol, well I would have said that you drew loads of detail. This is exactly the sort of scene I was looking for help in simplifying. I'd like to be able to draw the scenes I see from my window, but I'm on the 6th floor on top of a hill looking out at an overwhelming sea of roofs. I didn't know where to even begin. May I suggest a street market type of scene? Perhaps that's not the kind of thing you see in Australia or Paris. That's another subject I would love to try, but there are so many details! I do think my drawings have improved since I have been watching your channel, so thank you for that!
Great to hear Carol. I’ve just posted another video on this topic a few days ago using a field of flowers as the subject. It could be helpful to see the same principles with a different subject and possibly even a different way of explanation 12 months after the video you’ve watched. Yes, the sort of street market scene you’re talking of is not common in Australia, but why not have a go drawing it yourself?
Amazing video!! You are an excellent teacher! Thank you for the help and I hope your channel grows more and more. Much love from Brazil!!
That’s very kind Laah. Please tell your friends about it. 😀
Really helpful video with techniques that I can apply to pen drawings of landscapes. I live near a vast wetland with Mt Buller, Mt Stirling and Mt Buffalo. It’s a favourite place to draw and paint but I find conveying the vastness and distance a challenge. I’ll definitely experiment with switching pens. Thank you
The mountains are in the distance.
Glad to have helped. 😀
This was incredibly helpful in how to draw cityscapes!
So pleased to hear this Julia. 😀
its incredible how simple and well you put it. you are an excelent teacher. thank you
You're very welcome!😀
Thank you, Stephen! This answered some questions for me. Going to watch your other video on detail next.
Glad it was helpful! I have a playlist on this topic with lots of different subjects illustrating the principles. 😀
Just discovered your channel and it’s soooo helpful, love it, thank you for sharing this, continue doing your art
Thanks Vanessa. Welcome aboard. This is a recent video on that same technique but using flowers as it’s subjects if you’re interested.

All the best with your drawing. 😀
Just love your explanation. Very clear and uncomplicated. Really helpful. Please keep m coming!
Thanks Victor. Great to hear. I always try to explain things as simply as I can. 😀
Your videos are helping me get better and more motivated to draw, please keep more of these thank you :)
Fantastic Raile. I will, but there are I think over 400 already for you to catch up on. 😀
Brilliant, Stephen. Thank you!
My pleasure Greg. I have a playlist on drawing the effect of detail if you want some more examples. 😀
You make it look so easy! I need to practice more
Well, I’ve had a lot of practice. But thanks. One of my recent videos is this same topic but using a field of flowers as the subject if you’d like to see the principle in a different context. 😀
I think I've been needing this! Clearly explained. I'll have to see your other vids about architecture, too. I always feel like I have to get out out a ruler and I hate that, man.
I have a number of videos also on drawing freehand straight lines in ink if you’re interested. Those sorts of exercises are like practicing scales for piano playing. Could be a game changer for you. All the best DW😀
@@stephentraversart Oh, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info! I'll have to check it out!
@@stephentraversart Oh and I'm DEFINITELY looking at your trees video later. I'm in the desert and I'm like, "TREEES???!?!??" They're mystifying (Except for palm trees, I got those down.)
Awesome! This was a great tip. As usual, beautifully explained.
Thanks Rajan. Are you going to draw it yourself?😀
Excellent, thanks a lot amigo! very clear the explanation and how the technique work...I noticed that even your drawings looks so detailed...if you zoom in, it just a few simple lines...the trick I think is how well your drawings work as a whole, I mean you are a master in setting the main lines of your compositions, and then working a few detailed areas and keeping the background simple...results are amazing. Your shading technique is also impressive, seems ink and bush...I haven't get there yet...gracias de nuevo and cheers from argieland!
You know my secret Gregorio!😀. Now you have to put it to good use. All of what you’ve described is to do with reproducing how a scene works on our brain in real life. That’s why the effect of this technique is to make our drawing seem more lifelike. Use it wisely! 😆
Incredibly helpful!
Great you found it so Natalie. All the best putting it into practice. 😀
again billion thanks for all this invaluable knowledge you give to us.
🙂🙏🙏🙏
My pleasure. Please tell your friends for me. 😀

Drawing these big backgrounds with many buildings looks less scary now
Give it a go and have fun! :)
