Greatest night of my life watching Eric respond to a gobby tosspot fan thinking he was being clever. Every footballer watched that with admiration thinking I've wanted to do that meself. Footballers get no protection from the abuse fans throw at them and that's not even the racist abuse.

Leeds United were blessed to have Eric and here is the critical difference between the two managers... Howard Wilkinson at Leeds ditched Eric and put him on the back of the bus because he was his own man, creative on the field and wouldn't follow Wilkinson's strict team game plan (based on high fitness and out-running opponents). Ferguson, realising Eric's quality and creative genius with a ball, put him in as AMC - forward midfield and said "have a ball' be yourself, do your thing'... and then re-arranged the rest of the team around him.
Wilkinson was a fool, and Cantona's release to arch title rivals Manchester United one of the worst decisions in Football Association history, handing the title to them before the season even started.

but we still won 1998 world cup! I guess if we had an Alex Ferguson type manager for France, maybe could have worked, but no coach would have managed Eric and the rest of team differently. That is just not possible in a national team and won't work (See Argentina with Messi)
