Visiting this again in late Nov '23 with the 3 party coalition underway, thank God for that is all I can say. Here's to a revitalising and a realignment in our great nation.
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Their dealing with Maori activists who have been given a good deal of leeway by a kowtowing apologist Labour Govt(this covers many areas of our NZ way of life) and the cleaning out of the public service and Govt agencies following the largesse and liberal woke ideologies introduced in the last few years. This is a gangrene that needs to be dealt with immediately.
An excellent interviewer - you actually let the interviewee speak without interrupting. This is almost a lost art in New Zealand. An excellent interviewee - he answered the questions fairly, humbly and honestly...... So refreshing to see common sense prevail and be expressed.
That's so kind of you, I sincerely appreciate it. Im not a big fan of talking at my guests - my job is to ask the questions and shut up. What kind of leader do you feel would be best suited to doing the right thing for NZ?
One of the best political candidate interviews I have watching anywhere including the United States. Clear and concise answers to to good questions. David comes across knowledgeable and sincere. Share this interview with everybody you know.
While he comes across as the most concise and intelligent contender, and one who I would have, could have voted for, my worry has been the amount of fellow Act party contenders who have flown the nest. My question obviously is WHY?@@JamesLaughlinOfficial
I believe the divisive views held. And also David's fairly simplistic idea of cultural issues. Yes. We are all NZers but with differences and those differences need to be taken fully into consideration. The richness of diversity is what NZ is all about. I think this is a great interview and a good view of the various sides of David Seymour. @JamesLaughlinOfficial I can't see myself being in favour of his governing ideas but when he said people can do whatever they want to in life and hearing about his mother's health struggle, has been an eye-opener perhaps to his stance on things he has said publicly. Good on him for getting into politics and government. I think we need to all pray for continued wisdom for anyone governing a country, particularly our country, so we can keep hold of our hard-fought, valuable democracy and peace.@user-xb8tc3tc8t
Mr Seymour has no problem acknowledging his Maori lineage and I feel as though he is on the right track when speaking about Maori issues, concerning the way forward for our country and for the people of our country. I do believe in equality for all people living in New Zealand and equal rights for all New Zealanders.
David Seymour thinks he knows more about Maori Tikanga than anybody else does but he misinterpret the word Mana and Tinorangatiratanga , first of all Mana isn't given it is earned like respect but he doesn't have any Mana he's the only causing division because he keeps bleating about it playing Trump politics, keep bleating about it hoping people will believe the crap coming out of his mouth
David Seymour shows his best side in these long format interviews. It's a shame MSM don't give him and other politicians more time to speak rather than talking over them and trying to point score.
Anakei, I can't stand when interviewers have a point to prove. It's embarrassing to watch. My sole role is to ask the best question I can, then shut up. Refreshing to be able to watch an interview conducted in whereby the participants have respect for each other and the interviewer allows questions to be answered instead of the usual overtalking and 'journalists' trying to show how smart they are as we see in the MSM. Top tip, you are not smart if you need to read off a script.
It has been a very long time since I have heard such common sense approaches not only spoken about but actually enacted by a politician. I sincerely hope ACT gets the support it deserves in this coming election. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial I no longer live in NZ, so TBH it's a hard call to know if ACT has the support it deserves. I come from a strong Labour background and most folks still think it's post-pandemic backlash that's keeping Labour low in the polls, as opposed to the obvious failures of the current govt to address the very serious housing and cost of living issues, while actively promoting divisive concepts that for the large majority of people are incidental, namely race and "equity".

A very good informative interview.. well done James Laughlin for giving a platform for the opposition to have their say. We look forward to a complete change in direction after Oct. Once we were a strong wealthy country with proud industrious hard working people - we can be that again. We will put an end to woke Labour with their mismanagement of the country's wealth, their racially divisive policies and their governing for minority groups only. Thanks Joseph, it was nice to sit in the Beehive with David and talk about the reality of life and the state of new zealand. What do you believe his leadership will do to make a difference?
I think David Seymour knows what a woman is.... that's a good start. Secondly, he has his feet grounded in reality and fact. Hopefully, he will balance the World Economic Forum inspired National Party, after the World Economic Forum possessed Labour Party is evicted. He will promote policies which reward hard work, social and economic participation and personal responsibility. He will promote 'one country, one people' and 'one person, one vote'. He will continue to show Te Pati Maori up for what they are, and Labour, and the Greens, and probably National too to some extent.
Firstly, what do you mean by "I think David Seymour knows what a woman is"? Do you feel that him and Chris Luxon would make a good team to lead NZ? @@cpnurseries
Hello James - Thanks for the question. It seems to me that David is stepping away from the old hierachical model of leadership to a way of leading where he first listens to and then gives voice to what citizens are saying is important for them. He then facilitates the formulation of these thoughts and ideas into policies that reflect the preferred values of the citizenry. He seems to have a style of leading from behind that ensures that the voice and values of the people he represents are given high priority.
I agree, ACT / Seymour are underrated as in the comment below, an excellent interview. Brilliant "the reason you have goals like that is you often you don't achieve them" - at least you try!
100%. After sitting down with David it makes me real sit up and take notice of the mahi he’s doing. Who do you think will be the leader to take us forward into the future?

It gives a great feeling that ACT's policies are not to harm but to make us overall, a greater more successful country. I'll be 70 next month so have experienced the best and recently the worst in this country of ours, which has seen us in the past being a champion and leading democratic law abiding nation with equality of opportunity and freedom of speech for all its citizens. The new leader would need to take us back to those principles, we're only 5 million people(not growing at all) and it can be done with commonsense unbiased governance. This is an interesting view, not one I agree with. Maori are entitled to representation that promotes their interests. There is no restriction based on race regarding who can be a member of their party or vote for them. It is no different from ACT promoting policies aimed at attracting the votes of the wealthy, labour promoting policies aimed at workers, or the greens promoting policies for the environment; it is simply a political sector that wants to promote a particular political view. If you disagree with their perspective, don't vote for them.
What would happen if we started a For Whites party? It would be immediately condemned as a racist party, yet no one is complaining we have a party that is for just one race..... Maori
@Nesretepm pakeha are entitled to have representation as a culture too but that's not afforded to us as funded, for example if I was Maori I would have a world of exclusive Maori but you don't see the privilege or appreciate the billions in fact you're trying to decolonise its racist and we are voting you out, boycotting and defunding
@@JamesLaughlinOfficial - there wasn't 1 particular point. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial Reset. From my perspective reset is a deliberate act of putting off all previous concept and action for the sake of accurate review of every possible thing. This is functional, spiritual, conceptual and a profound “taking stock” of what is working and what is not. NZ does not need “business as usual”. Over time practices, priorities, agendas grow into entrenched behaviour. Entrenched ways of doing things. Things past treasured become lost. Things of little value become habits. Reset puts a lot on hold. Asks a lot of questions. Looks into what we are really wanting to achieve and look like. Reset can look failures in the face. Reset can take joy in new direction. Following Covid 19 there was a lot of talk about reset. But all that we saw in Australia was a bombardment of agendas, half-truths, narratives that divide. It was not a reset. It was a mess. An opportunity for a journey without a rudder.

David said many great truths but not about landlords in NZ. If NZ didn't have a residential home market screwed up like it is, I would have agreed. Relax city boundaries, build, build and build more and give tenants stability in creating a home to their families. Rather have less landlords and more investment in NZ's economy. Stop landlords buggering families around on their "investment whims." Becoming a landlord shouldn't be more attractive than investing in NZ's economy. And if you do become a landlord, realize you are risking your money and your money is less important than the stability of a family of multiple people.
@JamesLaughlinOfficial To get back to a market where house prices are 3 to 4 times a family's yearly income, there needs to be a drastic increase in supply and decrease in competition to buy. Imho, things got unhinged by building regulations and town planning not allowing adequate expansion. Land prices went dilly within set boundaries. The Resources Act became a weapon to style growth. NIMBYs everywhere. The focus shouldn't only be on concentration and "going upwards" (because of services) but outward too. Thus services need planning for. In the meantime, landlords dabbling should realize that 1) investing carries risks 2) their financial activity bears on family unity and stability and even in a free market, when things get out of wack (here because of government willful ignorance), the government has to step in. The government needs to get building (Ardern promised 100 000 kiwibuild homes and got elected in a time fewer people were living in cars). It's a matter of social cohesion and now calling for the invisible hand to create solutions in a badly regulated environment, is exactly what John Key were advocating till the day he resigned (now he's in charge of how much Kiwi homeowners' debt at the bank he's a big shot at?) I don't think it's difficult, there's just not enough polical will yet. There definitely will once the landlords become so dominant that the country's tenants cannot breathe anymore and the economy is so stagnant because of investable money going into "dead houses".
Let me waffle further and say that the concept of a zero sum in family home ownership (10 houses owned by a landlord vs 10 families owning their own homes) is obviously flawed. Legislation protecting tenants is the obvious mitigation in an environment where owning a home is impossible until the results of "correction" are realized where homes wouldn't cost 10 times yearly family income. So that's the case with housing landlords decide what they want then you have are landowners (landlords) that do or wanting to lease their lands should they have a say in negotiating rent rate?instead of government agencies?😮
Would’ve of loved to delve into why New Zealanders aren’t using public transport more frequently and see if it makes sense to build more roads when there is plenty of roads being built already in my personal opinion what New Zealanders need is a more sustainable frequent public transport network system that is both faster and more economical to use because we already know that New Zealand roads are way to congested by using more buses trains ferries and making the public transport system of New Zealand a priority is the way forward and the reality is if we keep on using more cars the more congested the roads are going to be if you do happen to interview David Seymour again I’m wondering if you could see his take on public transportation and see if it is still ethical to use cars as way of getting from A TO B because being a public transport user I can see the benefits of using public transport rather than a privately owned family car I was in London last year and I could see how frequently the London Underground was being used and why can’t New Zealand be the same moving forward into the future!!??….

Seems likeable enough but couldn't disagree more re: economics. The way you incentivise ingenuity and hard work is to remove/drastically reduce tax on labour and instead tax unearned income (rent, asset inflation etc ie. Money earned whilst asleep). Tax the idle rich.
Super fund and the pension. This is a social contract. Roger Douglas stated this correctly. Labour in 1973 made hard call then and created a savings scheme. But National (..Act) removed the pay/save as you go. When Labour became government again they started super fund and kiwi saver. This has been reduced by progressive governments in a number of ways. This Epsom MP does not talk about this. Why? He is prepared to break a social contract.

Visiting this again in late Nov '23 with the 3 party coalition underway, thank God for that is all I can say. Here's to a revitalising and a realignment in our great nation.
Thanks Steve - what do you think will be the hardest challenge for the coalition?

Fair point. Do you think they can't handle the pressure of having to continually be high-performers?
Equality is essential in a democracy. Do you think the coalition will sort it?
Dave Seymour is no maori.he is an english man with English views.

I really enjoyed the civility of the questions and answers. The interviewer did a sterling job!.

Great interview, refreshing for NZ politics.

It has been a very long time since I have heard such common sense approaches not only spoken about but actually enacted by a politician. I sincerely hope ACT gets the support it deserves in this coming election. Do you think ACT can get in this time around?

Such a reasonable interview. Extremely sensible views from Seymour to get success from as many people as possible, win win for as many as can be achieved as possible instead of destroying one group to benefit another group. It gives a great feeling that ACT's policies are not to harm but to make us overall, a greater more successful country. Egalitarianism he said, we used to have and lost, something he strives for and we should.

@@JamesLaughlinOfficial Yes well what would/should any leader bring to the table in future. The polls are a bad guess at best. If you could ask David one question before voting, what would it be?
He marked out a period of 15 years. They were part of these government from time to time.
The fact we have a party called “Te Pati Māori” is racist.
What makes you say that?
Te non_maori party maybe?

NZ needs a complete reset.
What does a complete reset look like from your perspective?
Thanks for sharing that Steve. So do you think David and ACT could make it happen?
And boy are we gonna get one!🥴

It is disappointing that only 1 party has a disability strategy that is properly articulated, (which is the Greens). As a family with a disabled family member, we talk a good story as a country, but there is little meaningful action or practical help. It's OK if you have ACC support. It's dire if you don't. Despite the wee disability signs, it is an unfriendly environment for people who need mobility assistance.
Thanks for bringing this up - and it's not good enough here in New Zealand for disabled people to suffer like this. Do you think the Greens can right it?

I have to 💯 agree with you. Too many kiwi leaders and businesses are focused on their little territory or region. A global focus is what’s needed for long term survival.

@@JamesLaughlinOfficial inwardly focused. We have an imbalance of how many businesses chasing the same market, money going round in circles. Nothing is moving forward. Our govt needs to invest in new businesses that want to challenge innovation challenge the international market, challenge countries in areas we could excel in. @@JamesLaughlinOfficial I am from Wellington but I live in London. There seems to be a crime phenomenon happening in Western countries, particularly around shop lifting which shows a breakdown in community IMO. Those things are now being tested and I would say identity politics is playing a big part

Which political party can make everyone vote for them?
Time will tell, what’s your thoughts?
David said many great truths but not about landlords in NZ. If NZ didn't have a residential home market screwed up like it is, I would have agreed. Relax city boundaries, build, build and build more and give tenants stability in creating a home to their families. Rather have less landlords and more investment in NZ's economy. Stop landlords buggering families around on their "investment whims." Becoming a landlord shouldn't be more attractive than investing in NZ's economy. And if you do become a landlord, realize you are risking your money and your money is less important than the stability of a family of multiple people.
That's a powerful statement. What do you think the next prime minister needs to do to right this issue?
The free market only works when it's free.

In northern Spain there are great worker co-operatives. But Act is unlikely like this economic way to do things.
Are you pertaining to the Asturias, basques or Galicians?
Seems likeable enough but couldn't disagree more re: economics. The way you incentivise ingenuity and hard work is to remove/drastically reduce tax on labour and instead tax unearned income (rent, asset inflation etc ie. Money earned whilst asleep). Tax the idle rich.
That's a great way to look at it - the 'idle rich' is a term I haven't heard of. Where can we start to make progress on that?
Doesn't that make the idle rich take their money elsewhere? If they do....where does this money come from then?
Super fund and the pension. This is a social contract. Roger Douglas stated this correctly. Labour in 1973 made hard call then and created a savings scheme. But National (..Act) removed the pay/save as you go. When Labour became government again they started super fund and kiwi saver. This has been reduced by progressive governments in a number of ways. This Epsom MP does not talk about this. Why? He is prepared to break a social contract.
