    I live on a farm and am a Prepper. I'm all set up. But, what if some motorcycle gang rolls in and runs me out of here. The plan is to go too the backside of the farm or beyond with my bug out pack and poncho and ride it out there. So these videos are quite valuable to educate me on how this could be done. This summer I will be camping a lot in the back yard trying these ideas out.
    When I fail there is the microwave and king sized bed inside as a backup. Know that I am paying very close attention and making notes as well. thank you. John

  • @thealabamabushcrafter6861

    Great kit my friend and very smart ! Someone once said, that the more you know the less you carry ! I'm ol school myself and I love it, ol school serves me well and I carry all military surplus ! It's good enough for our soldiers so it's good enough for me to carry !!

    Okay heres a tip. (gleaned from experience) if you order a lid and find that it is too small. friend it isn't the lid/cover thats too small its the cup lip that's too big, but not to worry a 4inch grinder or a 3inch belt sander with medium grit sand paper gently and ever so carefully applied to said lip (all the way around) will bring that lip under control...

    I don't have that kit but am very familiar with most of it. I'm taking the foil and other suggestions to heart for sure. Another great video and lesson. thanks

    That's the same setup I've been using since I was eighteen, forty-six years ago, right down to the aluminum foil. I started with the metal canteen, of course, but when it eventually split a seam I went to the Nalgene canteen.
    I've tried several other systems over the years, including some very expensive ones, but always went back because nothing else has been as compact or versatile. I do carry a second cup and lid, though, because I insist on having coffee with my meal. I may have coffee before my meal, and I may have coffee after my meal, but I demand coffee with my meal.
    The canteen kits usually rides on my pistol belt, or sometimes on a shoulder strap, but it's always with me.
    This said, I've been experimenting with a kit that may replace it. I was fooling around with my gear and discovered that the Pathfinder bottle, cup, stove, and lid fits exceedingly well in the canteen cover, and has enough leftover room to carry two fish mouth spreaders and a Sawyer mini water filter.
    This gives me two metal containers, and I can now hang either or both over a fire using the fish mouth spreaders. The wide mouth and detachable lid of the bottle makes also it much better than the military metal canteen.
    I have an Altoid tin in each pocket, one of which holds a fire kit. The other Altoid tin holds water purification tablets, and a few small items of a boo-boo first aid kit.
    An alternate setup, which I've only used once but like a lot and may make permanent, is to slide a Trangia spirit burner into one of the side pockets, and an Altoid tin in the other. This tin then holds the water purification tablets, and a smaller, but still more than good enough fire kit. If you ever try this, slide the Trangia in first. It makes everything much easier.
    The Trangia is another advantage over my old G.I. setup. The G.I. canteen cup puts so much pressure on the canteen cover sides that a Trangia won't fit.
    One thing I did learn was that the Pathfinder stove, now the Canteen Shop stove, which is a grill top, is a terrible heat sink. I cut a big hole in the top, and now it works well.
    But what works even better is sliding a small folding stick stove in behind the bottle. This stove not only burns wood, but has an insert shelf made to take a Trangia. This gives me a lot of extra options, especially in an emergency.
    It's funny. I bought the Pathfinder kit about three, maybe four years ago, and went whole hog. The deal at the brick and mortar store was two cups with lids, the bottle, the wood burning stove, the alcohol stove with pot stand, along with a few odds and ends in the pocket, including a fish mouth spreader, for a hundred and five dollars.
    It seemed like a lot of money, but I paid it, tried the kit, and hated it. It was just too many things in one kit, and there was no easy way to carry the bag. Out of sheer boredom one night, I dug out every piece of cooking gear I own, and out of curiosity, slipped the Pathfinder bottle kit into my canteen cover. I was surprised at how well it all fit. Then I tried slipping in the Sawyer mini kit, too, and it also fit.
    I've only taken the Trangia setup out a few times, but so far I love it. I think it probably sill replace the setup I've been using for forty-six years. I really is very, very similar, and it's only the shape of the bottle, cup, and stove that give me the extra room, and the advantages.

    Might consider putting pool shock into water tab bottles when they expire. Cheaper disinfection, just a granule will disinfect canteen full of water. Good vid thanks.

  • @jelkel25
    @jelkel25 Před 6 lety

    Well thought out, I use most of that kit but all slightly different, Nalgene same, sporks x2 are plastic as it's an easy item to loose, plastic is in bright colours and cheap to replace. Canteen cup same, stove stand same, lid is a lighter version, canteen pouch is a British P44 (like the WW2 US pouch but bigger). Foil goes in my pack somewhere where it will stay unruffled. Simple tried and tested gear.

    I'd say that works great, especially in the winter time. However, knowing the late spring thru early fall weather of south Alabama (as you do), I would personally need 2 canteen sets just to keep an adequate amount of water on hand for use (or a camelbak or other water storage device). During moderate/hard work (hiking, working, etc) in our summer time environment, our bodies will lose a quart of water per hour. It will not take long to become dehydrated at that rate.

    Like the idea of 6 feet of aluminum foil for even more multi-use. Most folks, self included, put a relatively small piece for a 1 time type use. Weight difference is nothing in comparision to the increase in capability.
    Thank you for sharing.
    God Bless.

    I can remember trading my lucky charms from the MRE'S for the small bottle of tobassco , it made a lot of bad meals better.

  • @ShelleyRaskin
    @ShelleyRaskin Před 6 lety

    I can see the utility of the plastic bottle, but would not a wide mouth metal bottle, that you can also cook in, or st least stew in and make teas directly not be more useful, sure you could not see its level but the ability to cook in it seems to out weigh that disadvantage. But a good kit to be sure.

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  Před 6 lety

      i have gone the one bottle in a fire way before..the problem i had was i could only do one job at a time..so i could not cook and brew tea..or bake inside the bottle...while doing water prep...ect..plus i can fry with oil in my cup and not have oily water bottle taste for the next few days...thanks for the comment safe journeys

    • @ShelleyRaskin
      @ShelleyRaskin Před 6 lety

      blackoracle69 I meant a metal bottle instead of the plastic bottle but all the other equipment (cup etc) as well. I have seen both the pathfinder guys sell one and a titanium one (mother of all canteens I think it’s called), which comes with a cup and a fire cooker thing.

  • @frankdn109

    Blackie, on a unrelated note (I apologize for going off-topic), do you know of a way to stretch canvas? I have a British surplus canvas holster for a modern-ish pistol. There's one problem... the mag pouch is just a wee bit too narrow and the spare mag won't fit. If I could permanently stretch it a bit I'd be almost as happy as I am to see a new video from you.
    (There, that should grease the skids. :-)

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  Před 6 lety

      lol..that's a tough task..often canvas will streach a bit when wet i would recommend soaking in very warm water and slowly force a mag in

    • @frankdn109
      @frankdn109 Před 6 lety

      Well thanks! That's what I did and it worked! I sprayed the mag down with gun oil to discourage rust and had to tap it home with a non-marring hammer, and done. Whether it will keep its new shape, time will tell.
