I had a meet up with three other mudlarkers on a small old dumpsite. Found some nice old things, and had a good time in good company.

I find it distressing that bottle diggers leave such big holes behind. I can see that huge beautiful tree is going to be completely undercut soon. 😢 I do appreciate your sentiment towards toppling trees is the same as mine.

I think in person it was louder, and it had some squeaks in the sound mix, as the tines of the scraper rubbed over the larger ash pieces in the soil. A bit reminiscent of polystyrene squeaks

The little bone rings were often (among other uses) on antique bags as 'channels' for the drawstring fastenings - I have an original bag with the bone rings still in place. Thank you for another lovely video.

The blueish glass reminds me of a peacocks tail feathers. I would find the dandiest figurine, and make him a proud peacock! Majestic, beautiful, territorial birds. Love and light to you Tom! Thank you for bringing joy!
Thank you Tom. Mending the bottle with that gold/copper looking glue when you don't wipe off the excess is beautiful. I think it would look equally as stunning mending ceramic.🤩

I appreciate your videos for the environmental awareness you have, and that you seem to enjoy the process of the outings and selective searching. As an analogy, in the knitters world we call that process knitting rather than production knitting. Thank you as well for the tidbits of info on the pieces you pick up.
the blue glass looks like a fish's fin, it could be lovely in a bowl with water on a windowsill - the way the light plays through the water and the glass is a quiet delight I think. Also, if you ground off the clear glass, piece near the tapered part and it would make a beautiful ornament or necklace. I fear tumbling would round off all the sharp edges that catch the light so well - but you are the lucky one with it, after all. So glad to see your videos as always!

Thanks Kathy, and yes... some diggers can be quite blind to the damage they do. Others are nice and considerate. David, (Lancashire Lad 1980), is one such digger... prefers trees and their right to stand than the bottles that may or may not be amongst their roots. 🙂

We are covered in snow here, so lovely to see summer clothes and greenery. Thank you. I loved the restoration of the bottle, both the process and the result. That aqua color can be found around the edges of Swiss mountain lakes. Again thanks for the breath of fresh air.
We're covered in snow here too, it's not too cold though, only -4 Celcius outside at the moment. I've just filmed a walk and talk in the snow, which I might put off posting till people are suffering from Summer heat. I'm glad I have Summer videos to put out during Winter, it's a side effect of being a very slow editor, but being able to sometimes film 3 full length videos on a nice Summer day. 🙂

I'll try to remove the clear glass with a dremel, and then see if it can be polished up a bit. Alex and Gail might well be the best people to do something with it, a pendant perhaps. 🙂
When you break off the clear glass let Gail and Alex refine the rough edges. It just occurred to me how nice it would be with gold ( but not too much so the light would hilight it more naturally).
Your collection of glass bottles is beautiful. The reglued pieces take me on another adventure.

If you can’t use that beautiful blue glass perhaps the Northern Mudlarks would use it in their bead making. It’s too gorgeous not to be preserved in some way. Really enjoyed the video, thank you!

You can use the blue glass as a tail for a mermaid. Attach the upper torso of a figurine seeing as you stated you have them already.

The bone rings were sometimes used on cafe curtains to slide across a round rod.

Those cute little bottles have taken over my Dad's shed. I've got a project planned though, I'm going to do a film of putting them out for other explorers to find in old ruins 🙂

I have dug bottles since I was a child with my dad. Just a few thoughts, Living in Maine in the U.S. most of our bottles have what you call sickness, as our soil is very acidic. I rather like the look as it reminds me of tumbled sea glass. Two.. It scares the heck out of me seeing folks in such deep holes with nothing supporting the sides against collapse. Thank you once again for sharing with us all. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
Thanks Lise, I do like some glass sickness, particularly the all over iridescent variety. But for window displays, I prefer glass that lets the maximum light through. I was careful to not tread on the walls near where Dave was having a scrape, I think they were well dug, and unlikely to collapse without extra weight on them, or serious rain fall. Dave himself has been in a bottle hole collapse, so he's more aware than most of where the dangers are.

Tom, the beautiful aqua glass swoop made me instantly think of a sort of forehead ‘horn’ to an alien dinosaur creature. But maybe that is just me? I thought the scraping section was hilarious!!😂 marble with no camera running - turn camera off - marble! Loved it. I hope if you celebrate holidays that you enjoy them!

Hey Tom, don't know if you haven't been posting or if it's the CZcams algorithm....but it's great to see you back on my feed !!
I have a small idea for the peice of glass that you found , throw it in the tumbler to knock off the sharp points drill a hole in it. Then use it as the center peice that catches the wind on a wind chime made from old silverware pounded flat you've found.
I've been posting regularly again for a few months now; I think the months long gaps might have damaged my standing with the algorithm though as I'm getting a lot of comments saying similar things.
Thanks for the idea for the glass. I think I'll try to remove the clear glass by dremel first, if that fails then the tumbler is the next option. 🙂

Apparently a lot of diggers leave some roots intact so the tree can regrow. I have seen a tree like this, it looks like something from another planet!
I have seen a few like that, I don't mind too much if they only dig about a third of the circumference. Anything more leaves the tree prone to falling if hit by a strong wind in the right direction. The Elder in the hole in this video, had it's roots chopped. 😥

Love the kint suki (?) Bottles. I have a beautifully hand made bowl that unfortunately broke awhile ago and kept with hopes of repairing some day. I will be trying this technique it should be quite pretty. You make it look easy to do which has given me encouragement to try it. As for the blue glass on the broken clear, could you cut off the clear glass with a tile saw, cut the bottom and polish the bottom of the blue glass then make it into a night light by shining a light through the bottom of the blue glass? I think there is lighting kits you can get on Amazon that are for resin. In fact if you embedded it in resin you probably wouldn't need to polish any shaping of the glass to a shine. The light shining through the shaped blue glass would look amazing. It would be a shame to put it in a rock tumbler and loose it's pretty shape because while the color is pretty it would come our as a shapeless lump of blue glass. 💙 Ultimately what you do with it is your decision and I am sure that no matter what you do it will be lovely
If ever you look out your window and you see a tent its just me😃another place i could stay is that bottle dig site its absolutly beautiful in my younger days i definetly would have spent some time there. I would find it hard to not take more then i should but i have learned that a person can have to much of a good thing. I collect agates with the expectation that i would make something out of them, well i have enough to keep me busy for three lifetimes. I cant wait for you to see your tumbled rocks i know you will be amazed at the difference. Thanks Tom great video.
Thanks Tom. I think you'd tire of this bottle dig site, the Factory air conditioning system is loud, and non-stop. I've learned that it's easy to have too much of a good thing too, I had to start leaving bottles in old ruined buildings... almost every one of them has found new homes now 🙂. And I might have too much brass now, for how often I actually light the forge up, but at least I could sell that for scrap if I really needed to. I'm certainly looking forward to getting the tumbling finished, they were beach stones already so quite rounded; I might be able to skip a grit grade. 🙂
@@tomburleigh9261 i probably wouldnt skip a grade the next grade will do a better job of removing the scratches from the previous grade,you would be better off shortning the time. I have tryed the skip and never been happy with the results making the finish grade take much longer. Hope this helps

@@tomburleigh9261 no not glass but i believe glass has a mos hardnes of 4 or5 most agates are 6 or 7 so i do not think you have to be as aggressive with glass
Ok i just look up mohs on glass is 5 to 7 agate is 7 to7.5 so i would think any treatment you use for your glass would be ok.

You mentioned you may be open to more scraping in the future. May I suggest that as you are a rather tall man, you invest in a collapsable rake? Would save your back and a good metal one would be relatively light. The beautiful blue glass on clear glass made me think of a paw. Perhaps for one of your creations?

@@PolinaS-gq1te I feel for you! I feel the same. I too walked my enormous dog. He's an old rescue I got in March, supposedly 9 and a half years old (nobody know, he was found wandering). He still has plenty of energy! 47 kilos. Gentle giant.
@@lisewarren2292 mine is relatively young (3y.o.)and a runner. Everything is a chew-toy, even myself. Asian shepherd dog, it might grow up to 80kilo(not mine, he's a discarded pup)

What a beautiful area to share with some lovely people. Tiny bottles are my favourite, I have Mums small collection that I keep adding to. A thought for the beautiful blue piece of glass, could you use it as a paw for a lion or dragon or something for one of your intriguing creations?

You can find clay pipe stems in nearly every field in West Yorkshire (where I live, and about 10 miles east of where Tom lives) and elsewhere. I gave up picking them up after collecting about 500 after finally realising that there wasn't much I could do with so many of them - even though I do create artworks with clay pipe remains. They were the fag ends of their day. Users of the pipes would snap off the pieces that became blocked with gunk and then continue to use the shortened pipe.
I've pretty much given up on picking up the small pieces too. I've enough for any craft project I can think of with them. Have you got many dumpsites near you in Cleckheaton? I'd be interested in a meet up sometime if you fancied it.
13:05 Oh boy, you and me both, Tom. 😞 In the one-block area around my apartment building, 7 trees have been taken down since May. One was an old growth (~200) oak, 5 were old growth maples, and 1 was a 25-30 year old maple. Only 3 of the 7 might have been considered diseased enough to remove. The other 4 were just "progress". People are so careless about trees - as if we'll never run out, or have more than we need. I know it's going to be incrementally hotter around here next summer without those canopies. 😭😭

A nice little tip scrape. It's amazing how many little treasures show up in a sea of ash and rust. Rock tumblers do sound interesting, but I imagine there is a lot of wear and tear over time? I'm just wondering if gold powder mixed with epoxy glue would be similar to kintsugi lacquer 🤔
Thanks Richard. Rock tumblers are pretty low power things, so their motors don't tend to burn out quickly. I'm planning on collecting all cobalt glass from now on, and amber, to smash up a bit and put in it... then use the pieces to make lampshades. 🙂 Yes, gold powder and epoxy glue would give a very similar end result to Kintsugi lacquer, I think that it'd have a weaker short term bond though, so you'd have to hold pieces firmly until it'd almost set, before starting on the next piece.
A very interesting dump and finds! I too am sad to see the trees topple because of the bottle diggers, sad that when they are done with a section they don't take the time to fill them back in so the trees roots won't be kept being exposed.. I am curious, I notice the types of vegetation that seems to sprout up around the holes, perhaps it's natures attempt to heal the roots? Have you noticed this? Like the garlic mustard plant, it tends to stop fungus and such that attack the roots. A wonderful video as always :)
Merry Christmas Tom. I was amused when you were talking about scraping and not getting anything until you turned the camera off. Maybe the marbles are as camera shy as you are. I do enjoy seeing the finds though, even if not filmed.
